Chapter 2: An Encounter with the Enemy

Iris laid in her bed with tear stained cheeks. She was gone forever. Her best friend in the whole world was gone from her life in one second. Iris glanced at her alarm clock which read twelve noon. She debated with herself whether to get up or stay in bed. "Iris," her mother called from the doorway. She sat up and looked at her mother. "Here," her mother walked over to Iris holding a tray which held a glass of orange juice and a bowl of Iris' favourite human dish, macaroni and cheese. "If you're not hungry, I understand but at least try to eat." her mother left the room and shut the door close on her way out.

Iris gazed at the food sitting on the night sand in what looked like a trance. "Iris . . ." a voice whispered through the room. Startled, Iris sat up quickly and looked around. "Iris . . ." it whispered again. She began to panic. The voice sounded so familiar but she couldn't put a name to it.

"Who, who's there?" she asked hesitantly. A silent laughter was heard but still no reply. "Quinton! If it's you I swear I'll kick your ass!" there was no reply and still that whispering laughter. Then before Iris, a tiny ball of white light began to glow from the centre of her room. She felt frozen in her position on her bed. What the fuck? She wondered in awe as the ball of light grew and began to take on the form of an angel like creature.

As the light dimmed down, the figure was revealed. "J-J-Juno?" Iris was in complete shock and was left speechless. Juno smiled at her dear friend sincerely. "How? You're dead!" Iris exclaimed and felt even more confused.

"Yes, I am dead. Did you not see me get shot two nights ago?" she asked sarcastically. Iris grinned and readied herself to embrace her friend by standing up and leaping towards Juno. Much to her dismay, she passed right through Juno and tumbled to the ground. "Okay, do you not get it? I am dead which means I'm not longer living. This is my soul not my body." Iris stumbled to stand up.

"I'm sorry, it's just that I miss you so much Juno. I feel like a piece of my heart and soul has been stripped away from me." both girls felt like they could cry.

"I miss you too Iris. You were and are my best friend in the entire universe." Juno and Iris were tempted to hug each other but it would be pointless. Iris would just pass through Juno like she did before. Juno held her clenched fist towards Iris. She opened her hand to reveal a small, glowing golden sphere attached to a golden chain. "Here, I want you to have this." Iris took the neckless and examined it carefully. "This way I'll always be with you no matter what." Iris looked back at her friend and watched her soul become a small ball of light and be absorbed into the golden sphere. Iris gasped at the sight. Once the golden sphere stopped glowing she put on the neckless.

"Thank you Juno, thank you . . ." Iris whispered as she wiped away a tear from her cheek.

Iris didn't return to school for the entire week but spent it in the forest at the Angalikan colony. Her mother and father did not object to it at all. They knew it would be best for her and would give her time to regroup and prepare herself to reenter the human society. Both knew if she did attend school, the slightest argument could cause her to over react and possible sprout her wings.

Iris' mother had witnessed something like that before. Her older sister's friend was killed by a human before her eyes. She returned to school less than a week after the event. She tried to be herself but was failing miserably and revealed her true colours while arguing with a fellow classmate. Nobody knew what caused it to happen. An Angalikans wings can only sprout when they will themselves to do so. Her sister never returned to school and nor did she.

Two weeks after Juno's death Iris felt ready to return to the human society. She wore a pair of black bellbottom jeans with a red halter top and wore her blond hair in a messy bun. Throughout all of her classes she seemed somewhat distant. As she stared out the window in the classroom absentmindedly, her fingers played with the golden orb pendent around her neck.

The sound of the bell broke her out of her trance. Iris picked up her shoulder strap backpack and headed out of the classroom to her locker then to the cafeteria where she met up with her friends Melody, Amy, Alex, Jodi and Rachael. They sat at their usual spot in the cafeteria which was at the back corner. None of them knew what to say to Iris.

"Are you okay?" Melody dared to ask. Iris looked up at her friend and forced a smile as she began to play her pendent again.

"Ya, I'll be okay. At least Ju-" Iris paused immediately. "At least Joanna didn't suffer too much which I guess makes me feel better." That was close. I know if I had of said her real name they would be asking all sorts of questions. Iris sighed lightly and took out her lunch. Melody then put a reassuring hand on Iris and smiled cheerfully at her. Thank god for Melody, Iris thought as she returned the smile.

"Hey, has anyone seen Eva?" Alex, Iris' Spanish friend asked as he looked around the cafeteria. Rachael opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by Melody.

"Well, speak of the devil!" she exclaimed as Eva sat down at the table. Eva glared at Melody and laughed sarcastically.

"Hey! Isabel! You're back!" Eva hugged her friend tightly.

"Ya, it's good to see you too Eva but you're chocking me." Eva immediately ended the hug.

"So Jodi, how's your brother recovering?" Eva asked as she opened her bag and took out her lunch.

"Recovering? What happened?" Isabel asked somewhat interested and somewhat concerned.

"Oh he got hurt by one of those demons about two weeks ago in the forest while him and his friends were hunting." Iris found herself speechless. "He actually killed one I think." Iris' mouth hung open. Jodi's brother had killed her friend. No wonder he looked familiar . . .

"Hey Isabel, is something wrong?" my asked concerned. Iris looked at her friend and shook her head no even though there was something wrong. "Oh, okay it's just that it almost looked like you went pale." Iris swallowed hard.

"I swear though if he had of gotten seriously hurt by that demon, I'd be ready kill it right now." Iris' eyes widened.

"You can't be serious Jodi!" she shouted in disbelief.

"You better believe it." Iris was shocked beyond belief.

"I think he should have died for what he did! He killed an innocent being!" Iris' friend looked at her alarmed.

"Okay Iris, are you okay? Those things are demons. They deserve to die-" Racheal was once again cut off.

"What did they ever do to you?" Iris barked at them.

"They destroyed to most advanced civilization ever known to exist." Iris rolled her eyes at Eva's comment.

"Maybe they had a good reason to destroy Atlantis!" Iris tried her best to control her temper. She didn't want to suffer the same fate as her aunt Athene.

"Okay, how about we drop the subject." Alex suggested as he tried to play the peacemaker. There was a long silence in the air between Iris and her friends.

"So, who's dressing up for cultural day this Friday?" Amy asked breaking the dreadful silence.

"I might." Eva replied.

"Ya, me too." came Alex's reply.

"I might." Iris said to everyone's shock. For the pass three years she had refused while her friends all dressed up for it. None of them knew why.

"Are you serious?" Melody asked in complete shock. Iris looked at her and nodded with a smile. "Oh this is great! So what's your background?" she was eager to know.

"Well, you'll just have to wait until Friday."

As Iris walked home from her bus stop she was still thinking about her conversation at lunch with her friends. I can't believe what I said! I'm going to dress up for cultural day! Now they're all expecting me to but I don't want to and I know Quinn wont let me. What am I to do? Iris walked up down the hallway to her room sluggishly and collapsed onto the bed.

She rested for a good half hour. That's when she heard her brother's voice and one of his friends talking. Lazily she stood up and headed to the living room to see who was with her brother. Iris could have fainted at the sight. It was Matthew, Jodi's older brother.

Matthew looked at Iris seriously. Her face looked much like the 'demon' he was attacked by on that Friday night to weeks ago. Iris avoid eye contact immediately. "Hey Quinn, Matthew." she smiled cheerfully. "Oh Matthew, what happened to your leg?" Iris asked as she looked at the cast around the foot and caff of his right leg.

Matthew glared at her in a knowing way. "I was attacked by a demon two weeks ago on Friday." he could tell she was playing innocent.

"Demon? I didn't know demons existed." Matthew glared at her hard.

"You know those angels of death the Angalikans." Iris bit her lip. She hated when they were referred to as angels of death.

"Well, I hope your leg heals soon." With that said she left the room and went back to her own. She laid back on the bed and stared up at the ceiling. He knows . . .I can feel it . . .
