I don't know what came over me right then. I had been so afraid. So terrified. But it was like something just snapped int my head. I couldn't just hide and watch. I couldn't.

"You filthy -- "

I jumped to my feet. I snatched up a peice of rusted iron pipe from the ground and started to climb over that wall. And I wasn't alone. I could see Brian and Steve on each side of me, both with pipes of their own.

I guess we just went crazy or something. It had to be crazyness, because there was no way that us three, alone, armed with pipes, were going to accomplish anything, other than whiping out almost half of the free people on Earth to know about the invasion.

<No!>

We all hesitated at the Andalite's silent cry. Felt Marco's hands grabbing at my shirt and pulling me back. Tobias and Marco held me down. Rachel put her hand over my mouth. I was trying to scream, or curse, or something. While this was happening I saw Nicole calmly say something to Brian that snapped him back to his senses in time for him to tackle Steve back into the hiding place and hold him down while Nicole covered his mouth.

"Shut up, you idiots!" Marco hissed. "You're just going to get us all killed."

"Guys, don't," Cassie put her hand on my cheek. "He doesn't want you to die for him . Don't you realize? He's dying for us ."

I shoved Marco and Tobias away angrily. But I was in control of myself again. Steve relaxed a bit and Brian let him go. He was in control too.

We peeked over the wall again. The Andalite prince was helpless in the grasp of Visser Three. I saw him held high in the air. I saw Visser Three open his monsterous, gaping jaws.

I saw the Andalite fall into that open mouth.

Brian tensed and almost jumped out again, but Nicole grabbed his hand and gave it a quick squeeze, calming him down.

The mouth closed. The teeth ripped the Andalite apart. And the Andalite Prince Elfango-Sirinial-Shamtul died.

At the very end, he cried out. His cry of despair was in our heads. His cry will always be in our heads.

The Hork-Bajir-Controllers began making a huffing sound, like whuh-whuh-whuh . Maybe they were laughing or applauding. The Taxxon-Controllers rushed forward and crowded around Visser Three. They seemed to be stretching up toward him, and then I saw why -- a piece of the Andalite fell from the Visser's jaws and the nearest Taxxon greedily gobbled it up.

Tobias turned away and covered his face with his hands. Cassie had tears streaming from her eyes. So did I. Brian and Steve looked like they were using every ounce of self-control not to leap out and attack the Visser.

I heard a sound that was strange because it was so normal. It was laughter. Human laughter. The humans . . . the Human-Controllers -- because thats what they were -- were laughing, like they were at some kind of a show. For a moment it seemed like one of those laughing voices was familiar, like I'd heard it before. But the sound was swallowed up in the huffing of the Hork-Bajir.

Viser Three morphed out of his monsterous form and slowly regained his Andalite body.<Ah,> I heard him think, <nothing like a good Antarean Bogg morph for . . . taking a bite out of your enemies.>

Again the Human-Controllers laughed, and the Hork-Bajir-Controllers huffed, and I heard a familiar human laugh I could not quite place.

Marco started throwing up. It was an understandable thing to do. But somehow that sound caught the attention of the nearest Hork-Bajir.

The snake head turned. He was perfectly still.

We were perfectly still.

The Hork-Bajir turned toward us. The near-sighted eyes were aimed directly at our little hiding place.

I don't know who panicked first. Maybe it was me. Maybe we'd just had all the fear and horror we could stand. It was like an electric shock went through all of us. We were running before I even had a chance to know what I was doing.

I ran. I gasped for air.

A cry went up from the Hork- Bajir.

"Spli-"

"Into the half-finished building, I have a plan." Brian said quicky cutting me off.

So we went into the building.

"Scatter," Brian commanded.

We all dove off in different directions. He hid next to the door way and we were all in the shadows. I think he gave Steve a look or something, because Steve went into the next room and made enough noise for the Hork-Bajir to know which room he was in.

As soon as the Hork-Bajir was past him, Brian jumped out and grabbed the Dracon beam gun off his belt, twisted a knob and pulled the trigger, aiming at the Hork-Bajir's head.

It dropped like a stone. There was no flash or anything, it just dropped. Brian looked out the window.

"Okay, they're trying to firgure out what happened. I think I set it to stun, so get his morph or DNA or whatever it is," He said looking at the Hork-Bajir. "Then run while I hold them off with the gun. I'll get a second to hide, morph and sneak away."

We all looked at eachother but did as he said, all eight hands touching the Hork-Bajir.

"Good, run. Get out the back door and do Jake's plan."

"Meet us behind McDonalds," I said. " We want to make sure you're safe. I think it should be far enough that they won't follow us. That is assuming they don't want anybody else to see them."

He turned the knob the opposite way as before and shot a bright red laser out the window at the advancing Controllers.

The seven of us turned and ran as fast as we could. Out the back door, into the woods. We kept on running until we came out on the far side of the patch of woods, then turned right and ran three blocks, hiding behind McDonalds.

Twenty minutes later Brian dropped down from the roof, scaring all of us half to death. He had some cuts in his clothing and about ten Dracon beams strapped to his belt, but he looked altogether fine.

"Wow, looks like we got some new toys," Marco said pointing out the hard to miss Dracon beams that decorated Brian's belt.

"What happened back there?" I asked with a grin. I guess I was glad that he didn't get himself killed. I probably would have felt responsible, letting him do that and all.

He shrugged. "I just kept on shooting and picking up guns until there were enough Taxxons eating their buddies for me to run without being chased," He answered. " They were in between me and the live Hork-Bajir, and blocked the door. I climbed to the rooftops as soon as I got into town. Its a good thing that this is an area with stores instead of houses, or I wouldn't have been able to run across the roof tops. Anyway, I got here and dropped in to say hi."

"Okay," I said. "Let's go home."

We all left except Steve and Brian.
