(Brian)
"Hey, Steve," I said. " I need you to buy me a backpack nextdoor." We were still behind McDonalds.
"Why?" He asked.
"Well look at me. What do you think my parents will say if they see me walk in with all these."
"Oh, yeah."
I slipped him a twenty and five minutes later he was back with a backpack. We quickly shoved the Dracon beams inside and started walking home.
Me and Steve live on the same block, but my house is closer, so seeing as it was a Friday we decided to crash there for the night during our walk back.
"You know, I saw the Human-Controllers," I said on the way home. "Chapman's one of them." This got a laugh out of him, until he realized I wasn't joking. See, Chapman is the Assistant Principle at our school.
"Oh, shit. He didn't see you did he?"
"I don't think so," I answered. "I really hope not."
At that moment we got to my house and I just froze. The door was broken in and the whole place was trashed. Oh shit was going through my mind. Someone might have been hurt.
We got inside, and we saw a note on the table. It read,
Dear Brian,
We are at Mr.Chapman's office discussing getting you into advanced classes. If you come home before we do go see Mr.Chapman
Love,
Mom
"SHIT!" I exclaimed.
"What?"
"They got them. Chapman saw me."
"Shit."
"Thats what I said. Come on," I said, draggin him up to my room. "I'm not safe in public anymore. I need to get some stuff. I gotta go live in the woods or the next town over or something."
"Go by Cassie's house," He suggested. "There are woods back there."
"Good idea."
"We should use my quad to get anything there. Plus that way we can try to run if they see us on their way back."
"Wow, you're just thinking so much today, aren't you?" I teased.
"YUP!" he said, smiling like an idiot to play along.
He went home and drove his quad up to my front yard while I packed. I packed my three tents. A 'four man' tent that only fits two comfotably, but leaks, a 'six man' which can fit eight or nine without supplies, or three with supplies, and a 'two man' that fit one comfortably without gear. I piled in many pairs of clothes for all weather and two sleeping bags. I don't know why, I just thought that if it got too cold in the winter I'd put one sleeping bag inside the other. Next the lightweight flip chair got stuffed in somehow. I then added My thirteen inch TV, PS2, GameCube, N64 and all the games and shoved my Gameboy and CD player into my pockets, with games and CDs. I don't know why I just did. Oh well, I could sell them if I needed money for food later. I dragged it downstairs with the backpack containing the Dracon beams still on my back.
I ran over and grabbed money out of the closet. About four hundred dollars that my mom keeps there. I know she would approve of me using it to keep myself alive and Yeerk-free.
"Holy crap," Steve said walking in and seeing my massive hiking backpack.
"Come on, lets go."
We dragged it outside and strapped it to the back of his quad, and I sat on it as he drove quickly off the block and into the woods. We could get to the woods behind Cassie's house from here, without being seen.
We got there and found a good camping spot, deep enough in that nobody would see us. We set up the six man tent and threw the bags inside.
"You know, if the Yeerks can read their host's thoughts they're gonna go for my house," Steve said nervously.
"Yeah, I'll go and check it out with you and come back when we're sure its safe."
The ride back was a lot faster now, without the extra weight, but when we got a block away we saw seven foot tall razor blades carrying out two adults and a little kid.
"Oh shit!" Steve said.
"I guess that's the phrase of the day, huh?"
