It had turned out to be a warm summers morning, a perfect day to spend in the par or just watching the sky, the white fluffy clouds rolling by over head just beyond our grasp. At least this is what 12-year-old Ayden would have normally thought on a day such as this. But as his life was now his only thought this morning was `thank god I'm still alive', for you see two years ago his whole life had drastically changed, and not for the better. Being only ten Ayden was stolen from his bed while his parents slept only two doors away. Stolen by who you may ask, well that is simple, a vampire lord who had chosen the name Rex. Though this was not his real name, at least not the one he had been given at birth. You see Rex must change his name every century to, among other things, keep from being detected by mere humans.
In the year 3007 it was common place for children to mysteriously go missing, some appeared years later with no memory what so ever of the missing years. Others were not as fortunate, their bodies were usually found aged beyond belief. Ayden however had been taken to serve under the vampire lord though that was the most dangerous of any services to a vampire. Having no real specific duty he was usually used as a bleeder, since he was young his blood was pure, untainted, and of course sweet. To a vampire this was a great treat and with their own on the police force and many in the government it was not hard to go undetected and get away with such things.
At this time of day Rex was of course sleeping and though this was so Ayden was confined to his room. Which consisted of a dirty worn metal bed with a hard mattress and one window, and most important a locked door. Being here was torment the only escape was to jump but to do that was a horrible fate. If you did not die from the fall the vampires' familiars would do quick work with your body. When they got through with you there was nothing left to search for. Rex's familiars were large dogs cross-bred with gargoyles forming a very vicious tamable breed all their own. To keep himself occupied having nothing of his own he would sing to the birds or any creature safe from the vampires that came to listen. At the moment a crow was sitting outside his window on the ledge of the slanted roof. So carefully walking to the window ledge as not to scare his listener off he sat on the cold wooden frame. Taking a small breath he chose his favorite if not disturbing song.
”I still remember the world from the eyes of a child…slowly those feelings were clouded by what I know now. Where has my heart gone? An uneven trade for the real world, oh I, I want to go back to believing in everything and knowing nothing at all. I still remember the sun always warm on my back…somehow it seems colder now! Where has my heart gone?! Trapped in the eyes of a stranger!! Oh I, I want to go back to believing in everything….” He took a short break as if listening to music in his head to fill the silence his eyes slowly drifting towards the sun overhead. “Where has my heart gone? An uneven trade for the real world. Oh I, I want to go back to believing in everything…oh where, where has my heart gone? Trapped in the eyes of a stranger. Oh I, I want to go back to, believing in everything!” His eyes were by now filling with tears, which soon slid down his cheeks to pool on his tightly clenched fists.
For a child he knew much more then one would at age 20, he had also witnessed things no mortal any age would wish to see. He had been tormented, splattered in others blood, and was forced to taste the sweetness vampires live for. The only companion he had besides the vampires that lived here and the other captives was a small white kitten that would sneak in the mansion and seek him out from the others. Luckily the cat had not been found and had continued to visit him while he was free of his confinement. Normally at this time of day he was allowed to walk around the mansion simply because there was no escaping the familiars. But seeing as he had disobeyed and order he had been beaten and was not allowed to have any meals for the whole 24 hours. By midnight he would be free to leave the room and would have one meal taken to him.
The hours seemed to crawl by like years until finally he heard keys singling outside his doorway. Relief and a slight tinge of happiness swelled through him until he saw that his lord held in his hands his white cat companion. His spirits fell fast and his happiness turned to fear and dread in great amounts. The evil grin on Rex's face did not help to dismiss the knots that were tightening in his gut. His mouth had suddenly become cotton dry making it impossible to swallow.
Rex firmly grips the squealing kitten in his cold dead hands his eyes practically dancing with delight at his new power over Ayden. “You look like you have seen a ghost little Ayden.” That was his nickname for the boy, which turns Ayden's stomach each time he heard it uttered from those pale pink lips.
Having no power to sway his actions he could only beg for his mercy. “Please Rex.. Please let her go..I promise to do anything you desire just let her live..”
These words only received a dark chuckle from the vampire who stood only three feet from his current position, which was being kneeled on the floor in utter submission. “Perhaps I will spare her if you promise you will never break my rules again..” Rex's voice was deep and that alone sent shivers down his spine causing his skin to prickle.
”I swear I will never break another rule just do not hurt her!” He pleads with him his heart pounding so hard he thought it might burst through the walls of his chest. His eyes search the cold heartless eyes of Rex praying he will allow the innocent kitten to live.
Surprised by the next action he almost fell over, the kitten had been placed at his feet in the blink of an eye, Rex seemingly never moving from his spot. Happiness washed over him as he picked up the small shivering bundle hugging it close to his warmth whispering soft words to the kitten. Soon he shut his eyes and cuddles the warm fur under his chin. But slowly his eyes open an odd warmth had covered his chest, it was warm..sticky, and wet. Glancing down at the front of his shirt his eyes widened in horror, he was covered in warm sticky blood and it took him a second to realize it was not his own. Lifting his eyes he slowly looked at the kitten which was still held in his arms. The body had been torn open while his eyes had shut the blood spurting in many directions leaving him soaked in the warm liquid.
At first he did nothing but stare in shock not able to comprehend what had just occurred within seconds. But soon his body began to shiver and his eyes welled up with tears for the second time that morning. They poured down his face mixing with the blood on his cheeks and lower jaw, the blood there became thin and easily slid down making him look like he was crying blood. He did not know what to do Rex had promised to let the kitten live if he agreed to obey him without breaking the rules and he had sworn to do just that. But Rex had never had any intentions of keeping the kitten alive, after all the pitiful mortal had to be taught a lesson.
So without saying a word Rex walked out of the room leaving the door open as if inviting him to try and get revenge for his kitten. And Ayden rose to the challenge. Casting the blood corpse aside he stood and ran after him tackling Rex's back. Of course being only 12 and thin he did not even unbalance the highly powerful vampire. This seemed to amuse Rex and he only chuckles with pleasure as Ayden starts to slam his fists on his head and shoulders doing more harm to himself then anything else. Soon Ayden was thrown off Rex and landed in a sobbing heap on the floor. He slid a foot or two before coming to a rest near a hall table. He never ceased his crying his hands blood and raw from beating on the steel like form the vampire possessed.
Ayden kept sobbing into his bloody hands smearing his own blood with that of his dead kitten, which could not even be described as a kitten anymore with the damage that had been done to it. Rex made his way down the hall to go extract his meal from one of the other slaves in the hall not wanting mingle cat blood with his precious virgin blood.
So Ayden was left to cry what was left of his heart out onto the cold hard marble floor his heart aching just as it had the first year he had been here. Rex was horrible he did not treat the others this way for some reason Ayden always seemed to get the worst of his anger. But why? Why would such a young boy anger him so? Possibly it was just the way Rex was the years of having no beating heart made him cold to any emotion. Ayden could only hope to be saved, and if that meant death then death it would be. What could be worse then going through the remainder of his life this way? But Ayden did not have the strength to take his own life and no vampire here would be foolish enough to touch Rex's property and none of the other mortals would dare. Even the thought of being killed by a familiar sounded better then this life, but Ayden would never take the easy way out if he had a choice.
