Birds Of A Feather...

Part Thirteen - Black Cats and Mirrors

by King Cheetah

I don't own any of these characters,
so don't rub it in... except for Sidewinder, he's mine.

Kinda sorta Robin/Raven pairing; you've been warned....

Beast Boy was just to the part of the dream where he rescued Starfire from the evil Baldwin brothers and their sinister Canadisation Ray, when a soft knocking at his bedroom door had him staring at the ceiling in a desperate bid to remember who and where he was. After some internal debate it was decided that he was indeed Beast Boy and as such had some responsibility to answer the knock at the door. Groggily, he checked to make sure that he was wearing his boxers, and opened his door a crack to reveal the sweet beatific smile of the most important thing in his life.

"Um, hey Angel. Is something up?" he asked, half heartedly rubbing the sleep from his eyes. She was dressed in her black nightshirt decorated with skeletons copulating in various positions, an joke gift from Raven, but cherished none the less.

"Gar, could you please come with me to my room? It is very uncomfortable." she asked, smiling softly as she swayed to some internal tune. He silently cursed Cyborg, who's responsibility it was to make sure the air conditioning was always at it's peak in the evening hours. Nodding weakly, he took her hand and pulled her along as she floated about a foot off the floor (her favorite way to travel). He sighed as the walk to her room seemed to take longer than usual, though this was no doubt due to the added weight he was pulling.

Stepping into her bedroom, he perked up his senses to check temperature and humidity, but to his mind the room felt fine. In fact, he found it to be a bit on the cool side for his tastes.

"Is it too cold Angel? You want me to adjust the heat a bit?" he asked.

"No, I find the air to be exactly as I prefer it." she said, putting her hands behind her back.

He looked puzzled. "Then what wrong with your room?" he asked, scratching his head.

"It is lonely." she said with an impish smile.

Laughing, he rubbed his temple and said, "Ah, I see. Well, we did discuss getting you a ferret. Do you want to go pet shopping tomorrow?"

"Ooooh, Gar you are teasing me now!" she said in a huff, then quietly, "Please share my bed tonight. I miss you."

"Miss me? We just took a bath together a few hours ago." he said incredulously.

"And our separation since that time has been very painful for me. I fear that it is effecting my health, see?" she said, placing his hand on her breast.

"Well, one of us has an elevated heart rate." he smiled, "All right, you win. BUT..."

"But?" she said.

"Just sleep, no fooling around. I'm still stiff from our run in with Sidewinder and I want to be in good shape to face Dagget. Okay?" he smiled wearily.

Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, she happily agreed. Crawling into her bed, he closed his eyes and listened to her bump about her room for a bit before joining him, but seemed to have somehow lost her nightshirt in the process. Snuggling in close to him, she softly kissed his cheek and laid across his shoulder. He had to admit, her room had a certain quietness to it unlike his own, and her bed was of a firmness that intrigued him. Perhaps a few more shared nights wouldn't be a bad idea. As he settled into restful half sleep, she whispered, "Gar... do you miss Terra?"

Wide awake now, he hugged her a little and said softly, "Yeah, I guess I do. But... well, I won't say that I've gotten over her, but I'm happy with where I am now."

She nodded, but said nothing for a time. Finally she asked, "ARE you happy now? Truly?"

Laughing quietly, he kissed her cheek and said, "Yeah, I'm really happy now. You're everything to me. How 'bout you, are you happy?"

Giggling, she crawled on top of him and laid across his chest, "Yes, I have never been happier." but suddenly, all the joy evaporated from her, "But... I, uh... if not for Terra's... passing, we would not be together. Is it wrong to... feel joy for this?"

He'd been wrestling with pretty much the same thing of late, and he guessed this was something all widowers had to deal with at one point or another. Sighing, he stroked her hair and whispered, "The fates stuck us together, and y'know, I think Terra'd be real happy for us." This brought a smile to her lips.

"Yes! Yes, I agree. She loved you dearly. I... I will try to be all to you that she was." she leaned down and kissed him, "Gar, do you love me as much as you loved Terra? It... it is okay if the answer is no. I will understand. She... often told me of how you loved her. I would sometimes get jealous to hear these things. No wait, that is not the correct word. I was envious of her." she said apologetically.

He was quiet again, but finally whispered, "Yeah, I love you as much as I loved her, but y'know... not in the same way, but just as much."

"I do not understand." she said, kissing him again.

Sighing he said, "I'm not sure I do either. It's just... I feel the same kind of happiness when I'm with you, but..." he ran out of words. He'd never tried to collect his thoughts and feelings together before, finding them oddly contradictory when assembled.

After a time, he kissed her again, "I guess I'm not ready to talk about this just yet." She made no protest, but went back to kissing him, which now he replied to in kind. He loved her so, but in some inexplicable Starfire like way that was altogether different than his feelings for Terra. Love, the great intangible. Like death, it felled Pauper and King, Soldier and Priest alike. He only felt whole when he was in love, and once he'd tasted it, it's absence in his life was physically painful.

"Am I still desirable to you? You have not grown tired of me, have you?" she smiled.

"Yeah, but I figured I'd have to wait until Robin got tired of Raven, then we'd trade off..." he said matter of factly.

In mock fury, she pinched and slapped him for a full seventeen minutes...

------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------

He sat on the towers edge wearing just his jeans and a muscle shirt, and it finally occurred to him that if he slipped and fell off, he'd be royally screwed... and yet he made no move to correct this. Robin looked out over the bay and wondered absently just what would happen if he fell. Would Raven be there to grab him? Would He manifest a hidden power and fly? Would the impact kill him right away? The sun would be up in another ten minutes and it occurred to him that his shattered corpse at the base of the tower would certainly spoil the view. Gingerly, he edged backwards a few feet and crossed his legs lotus style.

Even as he began to slow his breathing through meditation, he sensed someone approaching him. Raven, he though and smiled.

"I was going to help you on breakfast detail, but then I sensed that you were up here. You okay?" she asked, kissing his cheek.

"Ah. Well, I just wanted to watch the sunrise. Thanks for joining me." he smiled and kissed her.

"Funny, you never USED to want to do this kind of thing. I wonder what happened?" grinned Raven.

Chuckling, he laid back and waited for the sun, "Yeah, I find myself enjoying a lot of things I never had time for before. How about you?"

"Fantasizing about sex with Starfire, that's about it." she said, trying desperately to keep a straight face.

Robin smirked, "Oh you do not, you big fibber. Besides, now you'd have to get past BB, and as I understand it he's very territorial."

Teasing aside, Raven rubbed his shoulders as the first hints of the morning sun began to touch the horizon. Leaning forward, she gently kissed his forehead and whispered, "Baby, it's really nice to see you happy again. Just please let me know what I can do to keep you this way. I'm really enjoying it too." but he only smiled. The suns entrance into the day was as easily felt as seen, for warmth bathed them even as the morning light rushed past them to search out what other early birds it could find. Their moment went on until the very bottom of the coronal disc was on the horizon, when Robin sighed, "Come on, duty calls. Someone has to be there to shovel waffles into Cyborg, and I'll bet Wally will be there to match him bite for bite."

Sighing, Raven said, "Why can't we have a superhero team made up of waifish super models?"

"Cause you'd never let me out of your sight." he grinned, pinching her bottom.

To be Continued...
