Fan Fiction ❯ Black Wings of Love ❯ Rescued ( Chapter 1 )

Raven sat quietly absorbed in her reading, almost unaware of anything in the room other than the gentle drawl of the occasional poet on stage. When not at the tower, the heroine often enjoyed going out to dark and depressing Cafes to listen to poetry, drink some coffee or simply read a good book. Today she sat near the bar of her personal favorite club, "The Bleeding Heart", totally engrossed in the words of Edgar Allan Poe. She smiled a rare smile, as she lovingly reread the poem for which she was named.

"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door-"

She would have read on, if she had not been distracted by a rare sound within the "Heart"; Music….

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all

It was a boy's voice singing, of this she was sure, she glanced up at the stage and allowed her eyes to widen. Standing there before the mike, was a tall young man, with a pair of large black wings outstretched behind him. She had difficulty seeing his face; it was obscured by a red mask with a long nose. Raven recognized this as the mask of the Tengu, the legendary bird demons of Japan. An avid reader of mythology, she had loved the tales of wanderers who had relied on the kindness and wisdom of these creatures for guidance. Anyone who paid so much attention to Eastern Folklore deserved her attention she decided, she placed down her book and focused totally on the boy's voice.

Go ask Alice
When shes ten feet tall
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know your going to fall

Tell them a hookah-Smoking caterpillar
has given you the call
Call Alice when she was just small
When the men on the chess board get up and tell you where to go

And you just have some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving slow
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

What drew Raven to this boy was not just his musical talents and apparent multiculturalism, but his eyes were to her the most intriguing of his features. Like two emeralds that adorned his face, these blazing green orbs shone out against the mask which covered most of his looks.

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the white knight's talking backwards
And the Red Queen Says off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said

Feed your head
Feed your head

When the final notes faded into silence, Raven was amazed to find herself among those applauding loudly, demanding an encore. `I hope they play something a little more depressing. Jefferson Airplane's good, but not really my taste." As the first notes began, the girl knew she was not to be disappointed, one of her favorites was being played, "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails…

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

This time Raven had trouble concealing the sheer ecstasy the music had brought on, she had the desire to jump up on the table and do something drastic, but caught herself before allowing her emotions to take over.

She walked out of "The Bleeding Heart", with a new spring in her step, hardly noticing that she was walking through the dark back alleyway, until she was abruptly stopped.

"Hey Girly!" Came a catcall from an obviously intoxicated man by the door, who began to follow her.

`Just Ignore Him' Raven told herself, quickening her pace…

"Where yah going? I just want to talk!" The man got closer and closer until he eventually caught a hold of Raven's arm. "Oops… I lied." He pushed the now terrified girl up against the wall.

"Freak!!! Azarat-" Before she could finish the man covered her mouth.

"Now, now there will be plenty of time for talk….after I finish." He reached out a large hand and caressed Raven's face. She closed her eyes, feeling tears run down her cheeks, but became aware of the hand abruptly stopping. She opened one eye and was amazed at the scene before her.

The grubby, fat man, who had been accosting her, now had a knife to his throat. "Get the fuck of the girl," a familiar voice growled.

Only as her would be rapist ran away, did Raven manage to see her rescuer. It was the singer from the bar, only now he no longer wore the mask; she gazed up in awe of his beauty. He had long black hair that hung around his face in thin locks; he was rather muscled with a light tan and the same Emerald eyes that had hypnotized her earlier. Most surprising of all however were the same large black wings protruding from his shoulders.

The curious boy looked down at her with concern. "I'm Sky….Are you ok?"

She looked up at him and gawked slightly, "What are you?" before fainting.

Sky, sighed… `I wish I could say this is the first time that's happened."
