Broken Wings
Over the next week, Macoten's condition improved greatly. Soon he was up and about in the house, playing with Kiri and Kirily till they were all out of energy. His aggressive attitude seamed only to appear in threatening situations or around men that where taller than himself.
Their neighbor, Mr. Tingun, came over one day to help Jean change the light in the foyer hallway. He was a tall man, taller than most. And thought his face looked stern he was one of the nicest people in the surrounding area. He had, of course, heard that Jean had bought a demon and wanted to meet him. When they walked into the room where Macoten was casing Kiri around playfully and Kirily was sitting on the couch cheering them on Macoten's demeanor changed.
He stopped in mid-step and glared with his now clear, bright golden eyes. He growled softly in the back of his throat and crouched low in a defensive position. Jean, sensing that this arrangement was dangerous, stopped Mr. Tingun in the doorway.
"You see, he's quite lovely isn't he? His hair is extremely soft and he's the best playmate for the kids besides there dogs."
"Yes he's gorgeous! What's wrong with his left arm? It looks a little unbalanced?"
He stepped forward some more and Macoten's growl became more audible. Mr. Tingun stopped when he realized that he was growling at him. As he slowly baked up he watched Macoten's face. When he had first glimpsed the boy his face was a picture of childish pleasure but now it was a hard, sinister looking nightmare, the kind of face that you would expect to see on an evil creature. The children watched the exchange of looks between the two men and decided to break the tension. They climbed up onto the arm of the couch and simultaneously jumped onto Macoten's back.
Macoten fell forward in surprise but caught himself before he fell to far. He blinked at the children grinning at him from his back. And his stony face broke and he nodded at them and smiled widely. He did not look at Mr. Tingun again, but he didn't need to. The man who had come into the room had retreated out into the hall followed by Jean shortly after the twins jumped on the young demons back.
"That tings got a temper, Jean. Be careful."
"Yes, he dose, but this is the first time I've seen it since we bought him."
"You mean to tell me that you knew about his aggressive behavior before you bought him, and you still went though with it. Lady you amaze me!"
Jean only smiled and waved to the receding figure of the man next door as he began his walk home. The sounds of the children playing lasted for about another hour and then they slowed down to almost nothing. Knowing what was to come Jean walked to the kitchen and began dinner. Sure enough, not 2 minutes after she finished there came a call from the den.
"MOM WHATS FOR DINNER!!!"
She smiled and yelled back that it was ready. She heard rather than saw, the kids run into the room and seat themselves around the table. Macoten followed in a moment later but instead of sitting down at the table with the rest of them he walked out the back door and disappeared for a few moments the he glided back in a moment later. He walked back out to the den and sat down on the chair that was in the corner next to the window.
"How come he doesn't eat with us mama?" Kirily asked innocently.
"He doesn't need to eat everyday Kirily, what ever he needs he'll heat in the morning anyway."
"Then what dose he do when he goes outside?" Kiri asked.
"Gets a drink." Jean replied frankly.
"How do you know?" her son shot back.
"I watched him do it many time young man, and don't you take that tone with me."
They finished there dinner and then sunk back into the den. Macoten was curled up in the armchair in the corner, asleep. His chest rose and fell slowly to some beat of a drum that couldn't be heard. They pulled a blanket off the couch and coved him with it. Tomorrow they were going to take him outside to the playground in town. Or at least Kirily was, Kiri had to go with his mother to get his hair cut. It grew faster than Kirily's hair so it had to be cut every so often.
The next morning when they woke up Macoten was still curled up under the blanket but he was awake, he groaned loudly when they pulled him out of the chair and around the room.
"stop..." he protested with a faint smile on his half asleep face.
He had started to talk a little more after he told them his name but he only said anything when he wanted to, or it was necessary.
"We're going to the park today, We're going to the park today!" Kirily chanted happily, poor Macoten look utterly confused so Kiri stopped and explained to him what a park was.
"A park is a big area where there are lots of trees and toys and open grass. And there are all these people there that are doing all kinds of thinks, there's a pond and ducks, and a playground and our friends might even be there!"
"friend." Macoten asked in his mellow voice. It was all so confusing, now he had to figure out what friend was.
"COME ON KIDS! We'll be late if we don't leave now!" Jean shouted from the hallway. The tree of them rushed out after her and through the open front door.
"TO THE PARK!" Kirily shouted as she jumped up and down. She loved the park and she couldn't wait to show Macoten to everyone.
When they reached the park, which was just outside of town, they split up into tow groups, Kirily with Macoten and Kiri with Jean. They went there separate ways.
"Stay with each other and don't get into trouble."
Kirily led Macoten into the park and over to a boxed in sandy area that several other children where sitting in. She held tight to his hand and he could smell her nervousness. Where these tiny creatures so scary? They didn't look to be a threat, they didn't smell dangerous.
One of the little bots looked up at the pair standing by the corner.
"Hey look Kirily's got a demon!" he shouted catching the others attention
The other children all looked up. The little girls all gasped and blushed at the site of such a cute demon. His face was so handsome. The boys looked at him like he was some sort of new toy that only they possessed and they grinned madly.
"How cool! What's his name?" Asked one of the older girls.
"Macoten!" Kirily said proudly.
"You guys always pick weird names!" Said a tall boy in a dark green shirt
"We didn't pick it! That's his real name!" Kirily shot back angrily.
All the kids gasped. When you got a demon you were supposed to give it a name or you wouldn't be able to control it.
"What do you mean that's his REAL name?" The boy in the green shirt said.
"He told us." Kirily replied
"Told you! HOW! Demons can't talk!" The older girl shouted
"Yes they can! He talks!" Kirily pointed to Macoten who was not sitting in the grass just outside the sandbox
"No way!" all the kids said in unison.
"Yeah hu! Macoten." He looked at her. " Tell them your name, they don't believe me."
Macoten looked questioningly at the kids then at Kirily then back again. He sighed and turned around.
"My name is Macoten." He said in a somewhat perturbed voice, but that went un-noticed.
All of the boys and girls fell over with shock. A demon that talked. What would be the next surprise! The boys in the green shirts' shoulders were shaking and he glared at Kirily. He smacked her face and started yelling.
"That's not possible, He cant talk, he jut mimics what you say, I know, my daddy told me! There isn't a demon in captivity that can..."
He was cut off but a clawed hand pushing him flat on is back in the sand. Macoten hand moved from where he'd been sitting instantly after the boy had slapped his girl. He held the boy down in the grainy dirt with his good arm and mentally cursed himself because his left didn't work quite right. He switched positions, set his knee on the boys chest and lifting his right hand with the claws poised to kill this tiny being.
"You! I'll kill you!" he growled softly.
The boys eyes were wide with terror and he started to cry. Macoten started to bring his arm down and silence the boy but two small hands grabbed it before he could kill the annoying whelp he had pinned to the ground.
"Kirily?" He said in a semi-socked voice.
"Don't, Macoten, please don't." Tears poured down her ten year old face.
By this time the parents of the children in the sandbox had gathered and were whisking their children off so they would not get hurt by the white haired demon that had poor Jiro Kotiga pinned to the ground.
Jean and Kiri had just entered the park to pick up Kirily and Macoten when they heard a shot ring out. The people who where crowded around the sandbox area scattered, reveling Macoten, who was crouching in the grass holding his left shoulder. Kirily was sitting a few feet away from him staring at a man about two yards away that held a small gun in his hand.
"OH MY GOD!!!!" Jean exclaimed and ran toward the scene.
She hit the man with the gun with so much force that he hit the ground three feet away from where he'd been standing.
"What do you think your doing!?" She pronounced aggressively.
"That damned monster attacked Jiro Kotiga and had every intention of killing him! If I hadn't shot him he'd have killed your daughter too!" The man said angrily back form his position on the ground.
"Really! You think Macoten would kill his own mater!" She hated using that terminology but she couldn't think of a better would at the time.
"What? But he was..."
"Macoten its ok, I know it hurts, don't go!" Kirilys panicked cry reached her mother and brothers ears.
Macoten was still kneeling, clutching his shoulder. Kirily was sitting in front of him, crying, holding his face in her small hands. His eyes were fogged and filled with pain. Pain from the bullet that had entered his shattered shoulder and all the small pieces of bone that were still there. He passed out just before Jean and Kiri got to there side.
"i'm... sorry..." he whispered as he blacked out.
Jean scooped up his body and ran full tilt, motioning for her children to follow, which they did easily.
"Go to the vet's office and get that man we talked to on the way home today! Go, bring him to the house!" She instructed the twins.
They split up at the crossroads and went immediately to what they'd been assigned. Jean headed strait home and the twins went to the vet. As Jean approached the house she whistled shrilly and Fallen cam running to her. They entered the house and with perfectly synced motions opened doors and turned on lights.
Jean laid Macoten out on his bed and covered him up to his chest with the thick blankets. She heard the door downstairs open and hurried steps coming toward Macoten's room. Her two children came into the room, followed but a middle-aged man of medium height. His glasses where resting fitfully on the bridge of his nose.
"Thank you." Jean breathed out as she slumped down into a chair in the corner.
"What's the matter, when I offered to treat your demons earlier I didn't think I'd be called upon so soon?" the doctor said, his voice was deep and rolling.
"He was shot." Jean said.
"NO! By whom? Where?"
"Some guy." Kiri said.
"In the park." Kirily added.
"Where is he?"
All three of them pointed to the bed, Fallen looked up at the man with pleading eyes from where he lay next to Macoten.
"Well, I must say this is the best treatment I've ever seen given to a demon before."
"He's special..." Kirily said sadly
"Oh?"
"Yea. He can talk, and he's got pretty white hair and golden eyes and he real sweet...but he doesn't like guys."
"Except for me!" Chirped Kiri
The doctor, Dr. Trinity, walked over to the bedside and looked down at the unconscious body of Macoten. The boys features were lax and his chest rose and fell slowly. Dr. Trinity kneeled on the bed and inspected the boys left shoulder. It had been severely injured before. This wasn't going to be easy.
"Can he use this arm? The left one."
"Yes, but just a little."
"Oh boy..."
