Buckles and Beams
Chapter 5: The First Stage of Captivity
Aurora wept softly, hugging her knees to her chest and rocking back and forth. The voices had gotten much, much worse since the accident two years ago. She was five now, and should've been going to school. But when she was at school, the voices of her friends hurt her head much more than Mommy's. Mommy. She'd only started calling her adoptive mom that a few months ago. It had made the woman very happy. The woman's name was…Gale.
Aurora had trouble remembering things, since she had trouble deciding what were her memories, and what were the memories of the voices mumbling in her head. Like one day when she'd first spent the night at Mommy's house, she woke up thinking she was Daddy…Christopher. She even knew where Daddy's gun was hidden. Daddy had gotten really mad, saying that she wasn't supposed to go through his things...even though she hadn't. Father Gustov had never hit her that hard. Not once. Daddy's hands had left big bruises all over her flesh.
Many things hurt her more than they used to. Mommy said she was a "fragile" child, because she cried from almost everything. She even cried when other people got hurt. Not because she felt sorry for them, but because she could feel it.
Something pounded hard against her door, and Aurora hugged her knees closer to herself. She stopped rocking though, because she knew it was Daddy. And Daddy didn't like it when she rocked. He said it was caused by the devil. He also thought that Aurora was a demon. He made her wear a cross all the time…a little black one. Aurora used to reach up and play with it when she first got it, but one day she accidentally made purple spots grow on the cross…like she had done with the broccoli when she was little. That had made Daddy very, very mad.
He had called her mean things like Satan's Child and Demon Spawn. Mommy hadn't been home then to protect her, and Daddy had broken her arm. When Mommy had gotten home, Daddy was chewing his nails and sitting against the wall, much like Aurora was now, and Mommy had rushed her to a hospital. The voices were really bad at the hospital. She felt all of their pain, and she had cried and cried for days before she finally fainted and was returned home.
"Open the door, dammit!" Aurora closed her eyes. Maybe if she didn't listen to him, he would go away. He didn't. There was a crunch as the doorframe broke in, and Daddy was standing there looking at her, face slightly red from anger. He flipped the lights on and marched over to her, grabbing her arm. She didn't fight against him, but he still felt the need to yank excessively hard to get her to her feet. Aurora felt tears swelling up in her eyes, but she didn't cry. They were out of the house within seconds and she found herself being pushed roughly into the car.
"Daddy? Where are we going?" she asked softly once he got behind the wheel.
"We're going to get you fixed. My way. Your mother is at a friend's house…she needed a break from you."
