Fan Fiction ❯ Checkmate ❯ Prologue ( Prologue )
A woman sat at a table in her home. She was alone. She didn't know she was being watched. She sat innocently at her computer, typing furiously. How could she have known that she was being watched? Her back was to the window. She couldn't, or wouldn't, see the face that was pressed against the glass.
Sighing softly, she stood up, leaving the computer on. Walking into the kitchen to get something, she didn't seem to care that anyone who passed by the house could see the screen. Pictures stretched across the screen. People, covered in blood, severed heads, limbs not connected to a body, disgusting.
She returned quickly, sitting back down, sipping the iced tea that she had poured for herself. She sifted the awful images around, setting them in a pattern that only she understood. She stretched, bringing her arms up over her head, giving another view of the screen. Only the person standing outside could see it, though.
The person had been watching the woman for months now. He knew everything about her. How many people she had killed, how the police didn't ever suspect her, everything. He was sure that she knew that he had been watching her. Or maybe not. If she knew, she would have killed him by now. She'd killed so many others. But he knew enough now to turn her in. All he needed was to copy the files on her computer, and take them to someone who could do something more.
The woman moved from her computer again, disappearing from the man's view. He assumed that she had gone upstairs, for whatever reason, then walked around the house, and opened the patio door. Sneaking inside quickly, he moved toward the computer on the table.
Coping the files as fast as he could, he hurried out the back, thinking that he went unnoticed. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his back, and then another. And another. Pain covered his back, as the woman hacked at him with her knife. Finally, he fell to the ground, writhing and bleeding. It was a few more minutes before he stopped moving, and the woman watched this.
Slowly, she knelt down in the pool of blood that surrounded him. Grabbing her camera from around her neck, she quickly snapped three pictures of the cadaver. Then, she stood up, walking over to her computer again, and began to load the images of her victim. She smiled to herself.
"Checkmate," she murmured softly to herself, watching the computer screen. The images flashed before her as her smile turned into a grin with became wider and wider, until it dominated her whole face. She grinned eerily at the pictures, and then stood up to clean the blood from the floor, and bury the body in her back yard, along with her other victims.

For those who are reading my other story, "Burgundy," which is probably no one, I'm in the middle of the next chapter. It'll be up next week, along with the first chapter of this.
