Fan Fiction ❯ Checkmate ❯ Infamous ( Chapter 7 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

A man who looked fairly young, most likely in his twenties, strolled down State Street. He looked as though he was quite confident about himself, standing tall and taking long strides down the street. It was easy to see that he was also amused about something, for he had a small smirk on his face.

Lost in his thoughts before, the man shook his head slightly to "wake" himself, and gazed at his surroundings. His eyes quickly locked on a woman who was standing a few feet away from him. She was leaning against the wall of a small restaurant. It looked like she was waiting for someone, with the anxious expression on her face. Smoothing his hair down, the man strode over to the woman.

After some "smooth" talk, the man received a slap on the face, and he continued down the street, muttering ugly words about the woman. Straightening and striding once more, the man continued down the street.

Out of the corner of his eye, the man noticed another woman following him closely. Not wanting another slap on the face, he ignored her and focused his attention on the sidewalk in front of him. Only when he reached a corner did he finally pull himself from his thoughts once more. He stopped, and waited for the "Walk" signal. As he did this, he noticed the woman standing next to him, staring at him fiercely.

"What?" He asked her irritably. The woman just gave him a small smile that gradually turned into a wide, eerie grin. And she stood there, just grinning at him, for the longest time. The man was becoming uncomfortable under her still intense stare, and that grin didn't look quite right.

The "Walk" signal suddenly flashed, and the man hurried across the street, aware that the woman was right on his heels. He continued to walk hastily down the street. Soon, it was obvious to many people that he was trying to get away from someone, but all they could see was a short woman close behind him.

The man's quick steps turned into jogging steps by and by, and then he began to run. Though he didn't know what it was about the woman, his instinct told him that he should get away from her, and fast. After crashing into about five people, and turning into an alley, he finally stopped to catch his breath. Glancing quickly around the alley, he let out a sigh of relief once he saw that no one was around, and slumped against a building.

Dragging an arm across his face to brush away the sweat, the man breathed raggedly for the longest time. Finally, he looked up, and found himself staring at the woman on the street. He let out a soft noise, like a small animal, and tried to move. To his surprise, the short woman guessed his every step, and jumped in front of him.

Calling softly for help (because the man felt he had no voice), he desperately tried to get away from the woman, but found himself pressed against the side of one buildings that made the alley. Trying in vain to get away from the woman, the man finally slumped back into the building once more.

"What do you want with me?" The man asked the woman. She grinned at him once more, and his shivered. He knew what was wrong now. He understood everything. "You want to kill me." The woman eagerly nodded her head, and her grin became even wider. "Why?"

"I'll tell you why," The woman said. The man almost jumped in surprise at her high voice. He half expected the woman to have a deeper voice, like that of a man's, because she frightened him so. "You're my one hundredth victim. You're the only victim that I've ever killed outdoors." She waved her hand at the street that marked the end of the alley. The man shook even more.

"Why me?" He asked. His fear was overpowering everything else. If he had been himself then, he might have tried to gain control of the situation. But, of course, he wasn't, so he still stood against the building with the woman practically on top of him.

"Why?" The woman asked. She threw her head back and laughed. "Why? Just because. I just chose you randomly, out of all the people outside today." She gestured once more to the street. "I just decided that you should die under my hand." She traced his jawbone with her finger teasingly. She then leaned close to him. "Because of you, I will be very infamous."

Then, out of nowhere, the woman pulled a gun out from somewhere under her clothes, and raised it to the man's head. He uttered a loud cry that was quickly followed by a gunshot. The man fell to the groung, dead. The woman laughed maliciously, and then grinned once more.

People began to flood the alley. Cries of disgust were heard, followed by shouts of "call the police!" The woman still stood there, holding the gun, and grinning evermore. She was seized by a few male pedestrians, and brought to the ground. Still, she grinned.

And, even as she was pulled up and then put into the police car to be taken away, she still grinned. But before the door was even closed on her, she screamed out, "Checkmate!" The policeman gaped in surprise for a moment, but slammed the door in disgust. He turned to his partner.

"Looks like we've finally caught her." Loud laughing echoed from inside the car after the cop said this, making him shiver.

The laughing continued as the policemen got into the car and drove off. It drowned out the sound of sirens that blared as the car drove through the streets. Soon, the policemen both felt like they would go mad, but the laughing continued. Forevermore.

A/N: And so the story ends. For once, I actually like the way this went. The epilogue should be up sometime next week. If not, sometime later. I don't know when I'll have time to sit down and write it. But there will be an epilogue!
