Chapter 4
I was jarred from sleep, my eyes opening quickly as I sat up straight. A pain digging at my chest as I looked around, not seeing my own chambers. Slowly but surely the events of the night before crept back into my mind and I blushed deep crimson. Ignoring the ache in my chest I looked down to see Torrent beside me, sleeping soundly and making little noises of contentment as she rested.
I smiled and gently stroke her cheek before another stronger pain began to burn in my chest. I got up and made my way to a mirror to look at myself, I was a mess from the night before but otherwise I looked all right. Torrent had stirred and was looking over to me. Her eyes warm and a broad smile on her lips.
“Aden... it wasn't a dream...” I looked to her and stepped closer, sitting down beside her and taking a hand gently in mine.
“It wasn't a dream, Torrent.” I ignored the ache in my chest as I kissed the back of her hand. “We are mates...”
She was blushing brighter but paused as she looked at me, leaning close and looking deeply into my eyes. “Den... Something's bothering you...”
“It's just my chest... a little pain is all... probably something I ate.” I was trying to downplay it but I knew in my heart what that pain meant, a fairy had died of unnatural causes.
Torrent looked at me, seeming not to believe me until her fears were justified. In an instant there came a heavy knock at the door and an urgent shouting.
“Princess! Humans have entered the palace... we can't find Sir Aden anywhere!” the guard shouted. It was then that my heart sank; the Templars had come as the demon had foretold. I quickly rose and ran to the door, opening it just enough to frighten the hell out of the guard that was there.
“No time to explain!” I said, still very much naked. “Give me my sword... I'll stay here and defend the princess... lead them away from this room as best as you can!” the guard nodded after passing my blade, which he was evidently trying to get to me. I pulled the door closed, locking it solidly and looking back to torrent, my sword in my hand.
She was white as a sheet and shivering as the sound of machine gun fire roared through the halls of the palace. “Den... Is this for real?” she was beyond frightened.
All I could do was nod and reach down, helping her up against me, my arm around her shoulder, as she pulled in tight to my chest. Her hands gripping my fur as I let a single wing drape over her, shielding her the best I could.
It was then that the pounding started. The humans were trying to batter the door down no doubt. Thump, thump, thump... I could tell the portal was weakening by the moment and it would only be a matter of time before it was breached.
I held Torrent even closer to me, my eyes starting to overflow with tears as I heard her sniffle and whimper, my chest growing slightly damp from her tears. This was it, the end. There was no way I could last long enough against armed humans and protect the princes.
“Den...” she sobbed, “I love you.” she was clinging tighter to me.
“I love you too, Torrent...” I spoke gently as the door was ripped from its hinges, more and more humans poured into the room, guns in hand and full glass masks covering their faces. It was in that agonizing eternity of a moment that I thought. At least I got to call her my mate... just once.
No sooner had they entered then they spoke, the buzz of static from tactical radios coming in clear. “It's the one we're after, the female, she's not to be harmed.” the first of the Templars spoke, chambering a round in his machine gun. “What about the Angel?” a second chimed in. “Father Drake wishes to dispose of him personally.”
I began to growl, raising my sword and holding it out at them. “Remove yourselves from my castle!” I bellowed at them, loud enough that one of the warriors panicked and almost dropped his gun as he ran.
It took no more provocation on my part, the Templars opened fire as I did my best to shield Torrent. I could feel the bullets burning into my flesh and fur, as if they were on fire. Torrent let go of me and pulled back, ducking for cover as I charged. The pain was incredible as the bullets tore through bone and flesh. My right wing, which had been shielding Torrent, was torn free of my body, drifting to the earth like a macabre leaf in fall.
I growled as the pain only worked to stoke the fire of my rage. These impudent creatures had the audacity to murder fairies... in my own home no less. With strength beyond that which I had ever shown before, I brought my blade down through the torso of the nearest human, cutting him cleanly in two before swinging at the second. He too fell with a sword across his neck, he gurgled a moment and blood drooled from his gas mask before he fell forwards and his severed head fell backwards.
The remaining warriors trained their guns on me, firing steadily until I could see the barrels of their weapons glowing red from the heat. I swung again and again and each time a human fell to my blade. My vision was darkening as the blood escaped my body; I was riddled with holes, missing a wing and all but a puff of my tail. I was going to die.
I glanced back a moment to see torrent. She was staring at me, never before had she seen me as I am now. Cloaked in blood, eyes filled with hate and rage. Soon I felt something far more painful strike my chest and I fell back to the stone. Managing to craw up to my knees as I panted hard, perforated lungs no longer working.
There stood a beast of a man. Pale skin, sunken and entirely evil eyes; A pleased grin on his lips and two streaks of crimson running through his deep black hair. He was gaunt and cloaked in a heavy trench coat, in his hand was a smoking gun, aimed at where I was standing a moment ago.
“Father Drake.” a Templar bowed and pointed to Torrent and I. “Here are the pair... as you requested.”
“Very good, Brother... I will see to it that your team is well rewarded...” The Father spoke and all around stood at the door. His voice was just too familiar eerie and full of mindless hatred. “You may leave me to my work. I will make sure these creatures know the evil of their ways.”
With that the other men left, and Drake strode past me to Torrent. He grabbed her arms and pulled her along behind him, she struggled but he was unnaturally strong. I growled and rose to my feet again, making a move towards him and he didn't hesitate.
Another shot rang out and I hit the floor, a second smoldering hole in my chest. “I was coughing up blood steadily now as I crawled on the floor towards him; as Torrent screamed and reached for me.
“Poor creature...” Drake began, “you fought so hard, killed so many... and it was all for nothing...” I stared deeply into his eyes as he placed the barrel of his gun against my forehead. “Know now that you have died... at the hands of a fae...” he grinned wide as torrent struggled still. “Ebon Drake Gypsom...”
My last memory was of torrent screaming as Ebon pulled the trigger. Then all after was darkness and silence.
