Chapter 2
Our hands clasped in the familiar handshake before he pulled me close for a hug.
"Don't stay away so long next time, Sis. We all missed you here."
"Well, I don't plan to leave again anytime soon. Especially not to go back there!" I told him darkly.
The seven other who had come with my brother had surrounded us by then, to quietly express their joy at my return. Finally, all the greetings were finished and we returned to a more serious mood before we started to walk back down the street, keeping to the shadows. Our seven bodyguards spread out in a circular formation around my brother and me. Danger was still lurking out there somewhere.
As we walked, my brother silently offered me a small leather pouch that, when opened, revealed a brace of throwing knives. They were all painted black so they wouldn't reflect light and give away my location. I took each one out, and in turn, check their weight and edge for any hidden flaws-I didn't find any-before hiding them about my person. Each was placed just within hands reach.
The feeling of the weight of each knife about me made the last of my lingering nervousness flee. It had been along time since I had been armed properly; I hadn't realized how much I had missed the security of having a weapon within reach.
The movement of a shadow on a rooftop betrayed their location, and I stopped short. My instincts were already telling me which knife to grab for the quickest draw if it came down to a fight.
They dropped to the pavement silently, surrounding us in one quick and lethal move.
