Cutting Deeper

On one dark day, Raven sat at the edge of her bed. Gloomily, she looked out the window. The weather was almost as black as her mood. Clouds covered the sky, and, as if to spite her, it started raining. Raven stared out that window for a few minutes. The weather, suddenly deciding to be even crueler to her, turned worse. Thunder boomed, and lightning struck. It reminded her of Thunder and Lightning, and the Teen Titans' experience against them.
The weather's not getting any better, Raven thought. She opened her drawer. The other Titans were gone, right? , Raven queried to herself. Some sort of a shopping trip. It figures they'd forget my birthday. She withdrew from her drawer a small knife. It was a nice knife, as far as knives go. She rubbed the flat lightly against her right wrist. It felt cool against her soft, pale flesh. She shivered to herself in delight at the touch of the cold metal. It robbed her of her body heat with a wonderful little tingle. She was about to turn it sideways when her door opened.

“SURPRISE, RAVEN! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” the other Titans all shouted. The Teen Titans had not forgotten her birthday after all!

Raven got up to join them, but first, she put down her butter knife.
