Chapter 1
Melly Tussle combed through her blonde curls. Looking at herself in the mirror she smiled. "No one will be able to resist this, not even the Brandybucks," she spun around admiring herself. "I'll show Teren how beautiful I can be."
She hurried through the house to the front door trying not to be heard. Unfortunately for her, her father was sitting in the kitchen and saw her sneak by. "Melly," he called, "where do you think you are going?"
She turned back towards him. She put on her biggest smile and said annoyed, "I was goin' over to Mentha's house. Lily's goin' to meet us there."
"How fun," he said sarcastically. "But first we have to have a little-."
"I do not want to talk right now," she interrupted him rudely.
"Young lady you are still a tween. As soon as you come of age you will be able to do what you like, within reason. Until then you must do as I say because I am your father. Anyway," he changed his tone of voice, "your mother needs to be in here for this. Go get her please. She is in the garden."
Melly walked outside thinking, 'of course she's in the garden. She don't go nowhere else.' But she walked to the garden with the same smile on her face. "Tanta, come inside please. Gahiji would like to speak with you."
Her mother looked at her sternly, "Why do you always call me and your father by our first names?"
"Just a habit."
Together, they walked to the kitchen and sat down. Her older brother, Joachim, had already joined their father at the table. Gahiji walked around the table and stood beside Melly. "As we all know, Melly's Coming of Age will very soon be upon us." Melly smiled at his words. He put his hands on his daughter's shoulders and turned her around to face him. "Melly, your mother and I were wondering where you would like to go for your birthday."
Melly was surprised at this. How could she have forgotten? It was a tradition in the Tussle family for the young Hobbit to go somewhere of their choosing on their 17th and 33rd birthdays.
She thought for a few seconds before blurting out, "Rivendell, I want to go to Rivendell!"
Her parents looked mortified at the very idea of traveling to Rivendell. "We meant in the Shire, my dear," her mother said hurriedly. "You can not go to see the Elves."
"And why not, may I ask?"
Now Gahiji was just plain angry, "I can not believe that my own daughter would even suggest such a thing. What a horrible idea!"
"It is not."
"Oh, yes it is. Do not argue with me," he hurried on before Melly could say anything else. "We also wanted to talk to you about marriage."
"Marriage? What does that have to do with anything?"
"Honey, you know that you must be married soon after your birthday," Tanta sighed as if it were the most obvious thing in the Shire.
"Fine," she said with a flourish of the attitude that she was famous for, "then I choose Teren Brandybuck. Can I go now?" she cast a swift look at both of her parents.
"Don't you dare give me that attitude young lady. You better talk to Teren if that's how you feel."
"There is nothing to talk about. Can you not see what I am wearing?"
"I think you mean, what you are not wearing. You can not go anywhere until you put some real clothes on."
"These are real clothes. Fine, I will put a cloak on." As she walked toward her bedroom she muttered to herself, "that does not mean I will keep it on."
As soon as she is outside of the house she pulls the cloak back off. Suddenly, she hears footsteps running up behind her. Right as she turns around someone runs into her and knocks her to the ground. Melly looked up to see who it was and started to laugh.
She was staring right into the face of her best friend, Lily Sackville-Baggins. She then looked up to see Mentha Brandybuck standing above them.
Melly stood up and helped Lily to her feet. "Hey guys! I thought I was goin' to your house not you to mine."
"Sorry 'bout that," Lily starts laughing again. "I got a bit carried away there. But it is only 'cause of what we saw," she looks over at Mentha and smiles.
"What is it?"
"Guess!"
"I do not want to guess. I am not in a good mood. Just tell me."
"No way. Guess. Trust me, this will brighten your day.
"Fine. Was it a boy?" she teased her friends a little.
"A couple of them. Keep guessing."
"Are they married?" Melly thought it might be Lily's husband.
"I have no idea. I have never met them."
"Really. Just one month into the marriage and already you are checkin' out other Hobbits. Not good."
"Hey. I am not checking out other hobbits. No one even said that they were hobbits."
"You mean," it suddenly dawns on Melly who they were talking about, "there are Elves in Longbottom?" she starts squealing.
"Yes!"
