Chapter 9
“A Story While You're Sick?”

“The story must go on. She must hear my last act of heroism before we were reunited, for the `Eternal Love' to commence,” Crow says to himself as he stops watching Raven's dream about Azarath, before she left.
 
 
The alarm goes off.
 
`Perfect,' Crow thinks. She will wake up, and then he can tell her the story.

“Wait Crow!” the young Raven says, trying to keep up with him. He is fast, and they always ran. She remembers this as she watches her child self, on her 9th birthday pass her by.
 
“I was so happy back then,” Raven says to herself knowing that no one in the dream can hear her. All of a sudden a year goes by and Raven is standing by the river with Crow.
 
They make a bridge, and walk across the water. Raven watches as she jumps into the water and swims across the river, and runs on. She follows herself. This is a harsh truth, and maybe to understand what Crow meant she had to relive it.
 
She follows her younger self to her house, and runs in along side herself. Her younger self runs into her old room.
 
She remembers the room. Blue, with a stripe of pink across the walls. There are no lights, and there are many books. There are many stuffed animals, each of which has something like a stud holding it together. Other than the Toys, and pink stripe, it looks almost the same as her current room.
 
There s a flash, and she watches dinner that night. It hurts her to see this over, but she should get used to harsh truths.
 
“Dinner's great mother,” young Raven says, and her mother smiles. The dinner is chicken, and fish. For the fish, there is a plate of sliced lemons. The fish is covered with seasoning, and Raven remembers that it tasted marvelous.
 
“You know, ever since you disappointed me, your mother's food has tasted like shit,” her step father says while digging in, “we looked into your future, and saw the Azarath Metreon Zenthi, and when you were born, it was replaced with the apocalypse. That fuck-tard orphan kid who you are friends with had it instead! I married your mother because you were to be a hero. They don't allow divorces here! Also, the kid is an orphan, and I don't want to adopt anything. I hate you, you weak child,” her stepfather says, like always during dinner.
 
“Here is when I get fed up,” Raven says, watching her younger self put her head down.
 
“Please, pass the lemons,” young Raven says, putting her hood up, and looking depressed.
 
“Here, dear,” her mother says, passing the lemon plate and looking upset. She can't do anything about her husband, and is depressed because of it.
 
“Thank you mother,” young Raven says, taking 2 handfuls of them.
 
“The lemons can't hide the truth. You are a weak-“ her stepfather begins, but young Raven then jumps across the table, flipping it up and onto him, and holding him down, as she plunges her handfuls of lemons in his eyes. She squeezes the juices into them, and he screams in pain.
 
“YOU DO THIS TO ME EVERY DAY! IT IS MY BIRTHDAY!” young Raven screams as the current Raven closes her eyes and mouths the words, “I HOPE YOU GET BLIND, BECAUSE THEN YOU WILL FEEL THE PHYSICSL EQUIVELENT OF MY PAIN!”
 
Young Raven then runs to her room, and our Raven follows. Young Raven stuffs a bag full of robes and cloaks, and takes her diary. She breaks out the window, and runs. Our raven follows.
 
“Now, this is where I missed. I will stop at Crow's house and then it will go into what I didn't see,” our Raven says as she watches herself run up the hill where Crow's foster family lives, and she stops at his window.
 
He is asleep, and she sheds a tear and says, “I'm sorry I yelled at you Crow. I love you, and I hope we meet again, and can live together forever,” and with that, she runs off, never to return to Azarath.
 
There is a flash, and our Raven stands in the center of Azarath. A statue of Crow holding the head of the dragon king, and a sword through her stepfather's chest is in front of her. She reads the plaque aloud, “This statue is to commemorate the daring hero, Crow in his defeat of the Dragon king, and the leader of the rebellion, Chrono Darkwing…my stepfather…” she reads, and then there is a bell toll, “Something is happening in the church… a funeral…”
 
She runs to the window, but before she can see whom it is, there is a flash. Another few years pass, and the town is destroyed. It is exactly as it was in Crow's mind. Maybe she can find out the “harsh truth” as he called it.
 
“This is creepy,” she says as she walks around. She goes to the river, and sees something she didn't notice. A tombstone randomly placed on the edge of the river, just enough so the grave wouldn't fall into it. Raven walks toward it, but as she is about to read it, a hand bursts from it.
 
The hand then pulls the rest of the person out, and she sees a boy in a suit, with red eyes, and green skin standing over it. His wrists are shown just enough to show scabs, and he tears them open again. He is missing his hair, and he seems about 16 years old. His one eye is red, the other one has only a red pigment. He then begins to recompose, and his flesh begins to return. His hair grows back and he looks familiar. He smiles, and looks in Raven's direction. She can see him completely, and he screams, “RAVEN!” and she screams.

Raven wakes up, and almost screams. She knows what she just saw, she saw a zombie… okay… who?
 
“What is wrong Raven? Your sweating!” Crow puts his lips on her forehead and pulls away, “You have a fever.”
 
“I… I had a dream… I forgot it again…” she says, falling weakly on her back. She is sick, and she can barely move.
 
“Well, you can't go on the mission. I need to tell the others,” Crow says, as he walks to the door, and opens it. He steps out and she stops him.
 
“Can you stay? I want to hear your story,” she says weakly. He nods and is off.
 
Crow walks to the living room, where a pizza boy (here you go, Dan,) stands with the titans.
“Ooh! You guys order pepperoni?” Crow asks, and the pizza boy stops him.
 
“I'm not here to deliver pizza. I'm here to give information. I'm an underground titan. I get heists to them. The name is Dan, but please, call me Pizza Boy,” Pizza Boy says, as he takes out 2 pizza-slicers, and swipes some hair off of Beast boys head. Eh is a somewhat stout guy, who is also pretty tall. He carries a Dominos oven bag around his shoulder, like a man-bag.
 
“Dude!” Beast Boy yells.
 
“He also gives us free pizza!” Cyborg says, as he chomps down half a pie.
 
“Pizza Boy found out that Red X escaped form prison. He is hiding out at the docks,” Robin says.
 
“Where is Raven? Will she not be joining us for the thrashing of the Red X?” Starfire asks, winking at Crow. She is keeping the secret, and he smiles.
 
“Well, she has a fever. I'm going to stay with her. Oh, and Pizza boy, how do you know that?” he asks Pizza boy who is almost out the door.
 
“Hey, everyone loves pizza, even villans,” and with that, he walks out.
 
“Okay, Titans, GO!” Robin yells, and they all run out.
 
“Why can't I say it?” Crow says, as he walks back to Raven, who is feeling horrible.
 
“Ice…” she says, and he looks at her like she's crazy, “Please, get me some ice…”
 
He nods, and leaves, and returns with an ice pack, and a cold drink.
 
“So, please, tell me about the rebellion,” Raven says, interested, and remembers the statue, but nothing else, “I know my stepfather was one of the rebels.”
 
“You're right, in fact, he was the leader. Let me start…” Crow says, and he falls into a story:

It all started… hmm… a few months after I defeated Hiogi. I had become a hero, but there were some who didn't like me. The largest one of these people was your stepfather. He hated me. I don't know why.
 
Anyway, one day, a statue was being put up, but many didn't like this idea. I never asked to be famous, but people didn't know that. they thought I liked the fame. It was nothing without you.
 
-Raven smiles and he goes on.-
 
Well, the statue was being built, but I didn't like this.
 
“Mayor,” I said, “I don't want this. I saved us, but I don't want fame. Please call the statue off.”
 
“I cannot do that, young Crow,” he said, “the taxes have been used for this, and many people are sponsoring it. We must do it.”
 
I tried to stop it, but they wouldn't.
 
I gave up, and let them have their statue. I was sitting at the river when it happened. The bell on the church tolled, and when we went to the church, we saw the Mayor dead. The statue crushed them.
 
But the bell wasn't tolled by the choir children. It was hit with the statue's head by your stepfather. He had killed the mayor, and he spoke to the people.
 
“Do you really want the child to have fame? He is a mere child! He couldn't have killed Hiogi! Did he bring home proof of his victory? No. He left them, or the volcano must have erupted. Don't worship him! He is a false idol. JOIN MY RESISTANCE! Spread the word! Azarath will become ash, and Darkwing city will rise!”
 
“You can't do this!” I screamed, as I ran out of the crowd, and he slammed into me.
 
“I can do anything I want. The mayor is dead! NO LAW!” he threw me, and ran.
 
The town was outraged, but many people disappeared over time. We thought they were being killed. One month later, there was only half a town left.
 
“We can't let this happen!” the elders said, as they were split too. There were 2 of the 4 elders.
 
“We need an army. The rebels are killing our people!” the other said.
 
“What can we do?” a man asked.
 
“I am what we can do. I can train an army of warriors!” I said, and they laughed.
 
“Boy, that is much harder than just killing a dragon empire!” the elder said, “You must gain the trust of many people, and you have to make sure they survive.”
 
“Think, sir, I had a situation much more one sided than this, and I still defied the odds and beat the whole empire. We can do it if we try. I know it.”
 
The elders talked it over, and then approved, “The whole town will be a fighting force. You will begin to train them tomorrow. Until then, we rest.”

“So?” Raven asks, “How did it go? How did you win? Who was in the army?”
 
“Wait… I must do a dramatic pause… THEN I will continue…” Crow says, as he pauses.
