Out here on the lake, all was peaceful. Calm. Relaxing. Or so Jack told himself. The fishing trip was an all-expenses paid trip to some place in Utah, and Jack went along with it because he was being pressured by his boss and his boss's boss, and so on. He wasn't really the fishing kind of man. He preferred, you know, sitting at home and watching TV with his shoes off.

 

But it wasn't all bad. He was free from the stresses of work and life in general, and there were worse places to take vacation. It wasn't as if he had to do anything; there hadn't been a bite all day, not a single sighting of another human being. He was just laid back, looking at the clouds, feeling his fishing pole slip out of his hands…

 

With a start, the young man sat up and grabbed his fishing pole just before it slid into the lake. Panicked, he didn't even try to reel the fish in; he pulled. It worked, too.

 

With a splash, a young woman flew out of the lake, and landed in the small boat with him. Or so it seemed. Above the waist, she was a very beautiful -and very naked -redhead. Below the waist, however, there was naught but scales and a tail. Even so, Jack was caught like a deer in headlights when she looked at him.

 

The… mermaid, Jack supposed, had eyes of a feral yellow, alluring to his more primal side, which Jack didn't even know he had, and yet terror-inducing to his everyday self. And, it seemed, the mermaid could smell his fear. She smirked -there was no other word for it- and leaned in towards him. Jack tried to lean back, away, but his head was against the bench and he had nowhere to go. She pressed her lips against his…

 

…And poked the hook from his fishing line into his shirt. He jumped at the pinch of pain, and in the instant he winced she was gone, the only traces a few ripples on the water.

When questioned later by his co-workers about how he got the bad cold that was plaguing him when he got back, all Jack would say was “A fish kissed me.”
