Fan Fiction ❯ Drivin' Through a Flood ❯ One-Shot

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Hee, hee! I'm so proud of this! It's a (mostly) true account of what happened to me when I was trying to get to school during a really heavy rain that caused rapid, but not quite flash, flooding.

Disclaimer: I do not own the song "Walkin' in Memphis". I don't know who does, either.

Drivin' Through A Flood
sung to "Walkin' in Memphis"
by HieiWannabe
Computer Science Student Extraordinaire

(The Flood of Fall 2003)

Verse I

Put on my school backpack
And I got in the car
I was headed for Montgomery Tech
But I never made it that far
Made it through mud and a
Creek that had overflowed
But down at Deepwater
They had closed the road
Drove back to Page-Kincaid
Only to find that there they'd
Done the same -- I was

Chorus

Drivin' through a flood
Drivin' with my wheels
Ten feet off the street
Drivin' through a flood
Back home in bed's
Where I oughta be

Verse II

Stranded at the Robson Fire Station
With another student who'd been dumb
But after the fear had faded away
I thought, "That was kind of fun"
So when a man came by and said
That there might be a detour
I grabbed up my school backpack
As I ran out the door

Chorus

Drivin' through a flood
Don't wanna be
An evacuee
Drivin' through a flood
But, gosh, the road
Looks like the sea

Verse III

I might make it home if I
Could get through Boonesborough Road
But I had barely started when I
Knew it should have been closed
The water was high
My car almost stalled
And I drove through a waterfall!

Chorus

Drivin' through a flood
Drivin' with the spray
Ten feet in the air
Drivin' through a flood
Oh, man, I
Haven't got a prayer

Verse IV

When I made it over the bridge
The roads were a lot better
But my heart still went faster than my car
And my socks had never been wetter
When I finally made it home
My Mom asked if I'd been wise
I looked her in the eye
Grinned real big and said,
"Hey, at least I survived!"

Chorus

Drivin' through a flood
Drivin' with my wheels
Ten feet off the street
Drivin' through a flood
Back home in bed's
Where I'm gonna be.

Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that it doesn't follow the song very well. Gimme a break, I was working from memory!

As I was leaving for school one morning, I noticed it was raining pretty heavily. Since I was born with such incredible common sense and survival instincts, I turned on the radio and drove off. The only song I listened to was `Walkin' in Memphis', then I turned off the radio coz it was distracting.

I only started to realize something was seriously wrong when I reached a point where a nearby creek had flooded the road by about a foot. Depth, not length. Since I had a test to take, I once again displayed my amazing intelligence and drove thru the creek in my Mom's little Taurus. -_-; But, the only road I knew of to get to college from there was closed. So, I drove back, but was stopped by the fire department. In the half-hour that I was away, the creek had risen by about another foot and was impassible.

So, since I could go neither forward nor back, I had to take shelter at the fire station. It was a house-sized building with a smaller parking lot, and it was right up against the creek. To no one's surprise, the creek had taken over half the parking spaces and was coming under the door. So, since I might be there awhile, I parked my car in an adjacent field about 100 ft from the water. I didn't want to slog thru the mud, so I returned to relative safety via the road, which had high water that soaked my sneakers and socks.

So, there I was, sitting barefoot and cross-legged on the FD's stained couch, watching a firefighter trying to dam up a flooding door with sandbags. So, when I heard from someone about a possible way home, I ran out the door before anyone could stop me. It was, after all, an excellent opportunity to practice my newly-acquired skill of hopping in my car and proceeding to drive thru areas that were currently experiencing heavy flooding.

On the way home, I was treated to the sight of a brand-spanking-new creek that was currently in whitewater stage throwing spray ten feet in the air. In fact, the only not true parts of the song were the parts about wheels off the street and my conversation with Mom. I put that in because I wanted a t-shirt that said, `I survived the flood of `03'. I was so traumatized by what I had done that I had to put my experience in writing, and that song kept playing in my head, so you know what happened next.

I showed the song to my teacher, who let me make-up the test I missed, and he liked it so much he posted it on the CS website for WVUIT. He's the head of the Comp Sci department, btw. He also gave me the title, `Computer Science Student Extraordinaire', partly because I've made the Dean's list several times, and partly because I wanted to take a test so badly I drove through a creek.
