Eclipse

She thought she heard someone in the house; a low creaking was coming from the second floor study. Then, she heard a crack, like something splitting.
`What?' she thought, `No one but Dad has a key, and he's at work… Toby's (her little brother) at daycare… and the second floor windows are always closed and locked…'
She stood and listened for another sound, and presently, she began to smell a faintly burnt smell that was strangely sweet.

Flashback
`Ah! The cookies are burning!' her mom yelled.
`No!' she cried with a start. She rushed to the oven, took the cookies out to cool, and, in her rush, somehow managed to burn her fingers in the process.

Her heart beat a fraction faster. That was the day before her mom had died in that horrible car crash.
Suddenly, she noticed that her mom's picture was missing. She looked around the room, but it was nowhere to be seen.
`Where is it? It has to be around here somewhere…' she thought, `Wait… What if whoever's in the house took it? Oh no! That would be horrible!' She knew she had to save her mom's picture, but…
She thought about it, then made up her mind. She grabbed the knife she kept by her bedside, and set off down the hall. Suddenly, she heard a screeching sound, like some otherworldly scream. She froze in fear, then ran back toward her room.
She stopped and tried to calm her frantically beating heart

Flashback
“They taste great,” her mom lied gracefully, “I couldn't have done better myself.”
“Really?” she asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Okay, not really, but for a first time, you did pretty good.”
“Thanks, Mom.” Her mother smiled.

`The last time I saw Mom smile…' she remembered. She adjusted the knife in her hand and started back down the hall.
“Don't worry, Mom. I'm coming.”
She moved closer and closer to the study, and soon she noticed a glow coming from underneath the door. She crept closer and closer until she could touch the surface.
She reached out and touched the doorknob. She stopped, took a breath, then closed her eyes and flung the door open.
She opened her eyes to find that the TV was on and her mom's picture was nearby. Her little brother must have forgotten to turn off the TV. She sighed with relief and walked over to turn the TV off. She picked up her mom's picture and turned to leave when something caught her eye. A note was sitting on her desk in what looked like a piece of a gigantic dragon-shell.

Kitsu. Please save me. You know who I am in your heart, just as you know how to save me.
Dawnshadow.

A/n: Just something I had to write for school. I was going thru my stuff thinking `Should I post this?' and I said to myself `Sure, whatever.' Read and review. Oh, and in case you want to know (though I highly doubt it), I got and `A'.
