Chapter 1 :
It was dawn, the sky was fiery red. The orange and a bit of yellow blended with it was a spectaculor sight. It was as if the sun had moved closer to Spyra for the world to see from close.
In the distance, the clang of metal being struck together could be heard. In a low wheat field, where the wheat had been cut down, close to Narim lake, where two boys, brothers, practicing their sword skills.
One of the boys, the youngest, had nice blonde hair with some brown mixed in. His eyes were light blue, like the color of clear water when the wind didn't blow. He wore a blue t-shirt, which cut off at the sleeves to reveal a white long-armed shirt underneath. He wore a blue flame belt that kept his navy jeans from falling too low down his waist.
He turned, trying to get the sword and himself over behind his brother.
He turned, trying to get the sword and himself over behind his brother.
Wrong move.
His brother hit the sword before it even got halfway around him and sent it flying. Then, still turning, hit his brother in the chest with the hilt of his sword.
He flew to the ground landing on his back.
`Aw, man' said the boy on the ground. `I thought I had it that time.'
`Sorry, Ti' said Reagan, Tidus's brother. `Didn't mean to hit you so hard.'
`It's fine.'
Reagan had the same hair as Tidus, but a bit longer. His eyes were brown, like a walnut. Over his strong body, he wore a red t-shirt and black jeans. They were faided a bit in the front. He wore the same belt as Tidus, but the flames were red. He wore a red cap on his head. His white cape that had been a present from his granfather rolled behind him, like a large bird, flying against the wind. He was sixteen, two years older than his brother.
They started to walk back home, pushing aside the wheat, walking around trees. They talked about their night of training and what needed improvement.
When they got home, it was dark. A nice clear sky where all the sparkling stars showed up. The moon hung over the trees and their home in a crescent. There would be no problems with wolves tonight.
When they went through the door, their little brother was waiting for them. He jumped onto Tidus, which was the first one in, and, debalanced him to back up into his brother. Reagan was able to hold their weight, though, and held them steady until Tidus was again balanced.
Sean had six years old and loved his two brothers, maybe as much as mom and dad.
He wore, almost all the time, a white t-shirt and shorts. His hair was a bit darker than his brother's and a little shorter. His eyes were brown like Reagan's, but a little lighter. They had almost no color.
`I'm so glad you're home!' he said, very excited. `Tonight, me and mom and dad and you guys are gonna look at the Spyra Book!'
He was talking so fast that Tidus and Reagan had to think about it a few times before understanding. After getting no response, he ran into the living room, hitting his toe on the leg of a chair, and after jumping on one foot for a while, lost balance and fell straight onto his face.
`Sometimes I wonder if he'll make it until he's ten' said Reagan while they were walking up to their room. They had decided to share one, to leave more room for other things.
Their house was very big. It was four storys high plus a basement. It had cost a lot of money too, but there was a source for that money. Their father, John Durko, was the owner of the best charpentry business on the whole island. Their mother, Amanda Durko, was a very famous doctor who had made a number of special medicines that could cure just about anything.
Tidus layed down on his bed.
`You know Reagan, you can accept to be Lord of Earth if you want. I don't mind. I'm sure another god will ask me a little while after.'
Both Tidus and Reagan had had an offer to be Lords of Earth, but only one could. The goddess of earth, Meko, had left the choice to the two boys.
`No' said Reagan. `We'll go with our plan.'
The two brothers had a plan. When they both had a request to be Lords, they would each take up the job. They would go defeat the other Lords, but not eachother. They would keep their distance from one another and would not do battle.
`As you wish, but I really don't mind.'
Tidus got off his comfortable water bed, complete with little plastic fishes in it's water and went to stand in the doorway.
`You wanna look at the Book of Spyra?' asked Tidus. He himself wanted to go see which country was leading in the Element Lord competition.
`Ya, I'll come.' He too was a little eager to see who was leading in the battle. `Sean's really excited, but then again, it's his first time looking at it.'
When they got into the living room, the Book of Spyra was on the table, with lavender candles on both sides.
Sean was sitting on the floor in front of the table. He looked longinly at the book.
`Where's mom and dad?' asked Tidus.
Sean jumped at hearing his brother's voice. He was so concentrated in trying to figure out what was in the book the he didn't hear his brothers coming in.
`They're in the kitchen. I think mom is making something.'
After answering, He turned back to the book. Still trying to find out what was in it's covers.
`Making something? You think it's a cake, Tidus?' asked Reagan.
`Maybe. If it is, I hope it's chocolate. That three chocolate cheese cake she makes.'
`I hope so too.'
They both sat down, one on each side of their brother and looked at the book also. The last time they had both seen it was when Reagan was ten and Tidus was eight.
`So, is everyone ready to see who's winning, leading the battle?' said their mother. She was walking beside her husband holding a plate. On the flower painted plate was a cake, chocolate.
The three brother's parents sat down beside them and laid the plate down on the table, over to the left side.
It seems kind of pointless to see which god is leading in a deadly “game”, but it is an honor to be a Lord, to receive some of a god's power and to fight under their name.
After looking at the cover of the book, at the well writen letters that formed The Book of Spyra in gold, John opened it's pages. He flipped the pages until he got to page 450. On the top of the page, for a title, it was marked, Spyra :The World.
Filling up both pages, right and left, was a map. Eight islands were placed thoughout the map. Each island had a name, and a little picture to describe it.
Sean was looking at the pictures and the gold lettering with such passion in his eyes, that John had to shake him lightly to get him out of his strance.
`When do we start? When are you going to tell me what it is? I wanna know, I wanna know!' said Jean. He really wanted his mom to explain all the beautiful things he saw on these two pages.
`Alright Sean, I'll tell you all about the islands first. Over in the left hand corner, where you see Ambaroshus, that's the island of fire, where Arthum, god of fire lives. See the volcano on the top of his island? That volcano was built by the god of fire himself. It's called Arthum's Will.'
Tidus and Reagan were remembering when their mother had told them this for the first time also. They had been much younger than Sean, three or four years younger.
`The island right underneath it, the biggest one, is where we live, Enteakam. The reason why you see a flower underneath it's name is because the island of earth, where Meko, the goddess of eath lives, is the only place with such beautiful natural growth. You see that lake? That's Narim Lake. The one that says Lumounus is the island of light, where the god of light, Khenme lives. The dome with the buildings you see on the upper part of the island is the Shinning Globe, where sivilisation has bloomed at it's fullest. The buildings and things in that dome are remarkable! The next island, the one in the left side corner, shaped like a kidney almost, is Arium. Ciana, goddess of air lives there. Mountains on that island are so high, most of them penetrate the clouds.'
`Alright, cake break' said John. He hadn't been able to pull his eyes off from that wonderful looking cake from the start of the explanation. He cut everyone a piece, all the same size, finishing with himself.
`Thanks dad' said Tidus. He loved his mom's three-chocolate-cheese-cake. That would be one of the things he'd miss when he became a Lord.
`While you guys eat your cake, I'll continue' said their mom, she was eager to finish. She had had a hard day at work today. `The island beside Enteakam…'
`Where we live, right?' asked Sean.
`Yes honey, That's where we live. The island next to Enteakem, the one that looks like a wrong way question mark with no dot is Ilquam. That's where Athea, goddes of illusion lives. Where you see that shaky image that looks like a ghost, that's where the Throne Of Samira is. Samira was the greatest Lord in her time, so Althea created a stage, where famous pupeteers and actors play. Underneath that, is Weshma, island of water where Saemus lives. In Weshma, you will find the greatest and grandest beaches you have ever seen.'
`That's where I met your mother. It was the best summer I'd ever had. We had so much fun that year' put in John.
`Yes dear, we did have a lot of fun that summer. Moving along. The island over that is Dinamus, the island of Darkness. On that island, the god of darkness, Farza, he lives there. The island has no sign because that island has nothing, never has and never will. I'd rather not talk about this one…'
`Only people who'd rather die than live stay on that island' said Reagan.
`Some people, and old legends say they're all ghosts and blood thirsty creatures' put in Tidus.
Their mother was quik to put in, `but those are just legends, Sean. It's not real.'
Tidus and Reagan looked at eachother. They knew their mother was just trying not to scare Sean. Tidus and Reagan had been to the island of the dead, the island of darkness. There were no people, just souls, and beasts that strived on living beings.
`Well, that last island remains' continued their mother. `The last island, on the far right is where the god of lighting lives, Lios. The name of the island is Larkos. There is nothing very spectaculor on this island, but the lake is said to hold burried treasures and priceless items in it's depth.'
Amanda stoped for a while, to see if Sean was going to say anything. After seeing he was too busy thinking about everything he had just heard, she continued right along.
`Now, to see who's leading the battle.'
She turned the pages until she got to the one needed. 767. As she got to the page, the numbers began to change, they were changing from the last time the book had been brought to this page. When the numbers settled, gleaming gold, you could make out who was leading from first to last.
`As you can see' said their mother. `Althea is winning with seventeen points. Saemus following with fifteen. Arthum and Ciana, tied with eleven. Then Meko with nine points. Khenme with six. Following is Lios with five points, and last, with two point is Farza.'
After a few comments on what had been said, everyone decided to go straight to bed.
Tidus and Reagan climbed up to their room and laid down.
`Fifth. That's not bad, at least it's an improvement' said Tidus.
`Ya, I guess. If one of us was Lord of Earth, we'd be fisrt' replied Reagan.
`Maybe.'
As everyone went to bed, of course no one heard the sound of a figure walking around their house to look at the two brother's window. And no one heard the sound of package being lightly dropped onto their desk by an owl. Equaly, no one heard the figure walk away, in the clear night, with the moon hung over the sky as a crescent.
