Fan Fiction ❯ Exodus ❯ The Beginning ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]
All seemed quiet in Jump City. Ever since Titans East had been formed, it seemed like all the super-villains had left to test Aqualad and the rest. In short, Robin, Cyborg, Beast Boy, Starfire, and Raven were bored. With a capital ‘B.’ At the moment, Cyborg and Beast Boy were enraptured with another new racing video game, Robin was training, and Starfire and Raven were attempting to contact Raven’s mother in the Spirit World.

BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!

Robin paused, causing the punching bag he had been training with to smack him in the head. Rubbing his head, he stepped out into the hall. In the living room, Cyborg was already in front of the computer, downloading the data. When Robin approached him, Beast Boy waved him back, saying “I just creamed Cyborg in Racer X 2, and he’s in a really bad mood. Ya don’t wanna mess with him right now.” Raven appeared out of the floor in one of her dark portals, and Starfire flew from the door next to her. Both seemed slightly annoyed.

“This had better be good,” Raven commented monotonously.

“Indeed,” Starfire added. “We were, umm, in the center of matters.” Raven sighed. “The middle of things, Starfire. Anyway, what’s going on?” Cyborg looked up from the computer screen.

“Well, it’s not much.” A video clip appeared onscreen as he talked. “It seems a group of people have come into town and stirred up some trouble. Looks like a one-man job.”

“I’ll handle it,” Raven said as she began to sink into the floor. “You’ve already bothered me enough.” As she left, Beast Boy scratched the back of his head. “What’s she talking about, dudes?”

“We were trying to contact her mother once again,” Starfire explained. “She truly misses Arella very much, just as I miss my own parents.”

“Oh...” Was all Beast Boy could think to say. Apparently, it wasn’t good enough for Star, because she huffed and flew off, presumably to her room. Robin and Cyborg turned to look at Beast Boy. The said changeling rubbed the back of his head as a sweatdrop quickly raced down his back. “What?! It’s not like I knew she missed her mom or anything!” Robin and Cyborg shared a look, then walked out of the room. “What?!” Beast Boy called to them, but they shared no reply.

Raven popped up at the coordinates Cyborg had given her. Around her was chaos, pure and simple. To the right were Jump citizens, to the left, a group of unfamiliar people. The men wore their hair short in the back, but with long tresses hanging in front of their ears. The women had just the opposite, their hair long in back, but cut short in front. There was shouting, and screaming, and suddenly, Raven couldn’t take anymore. “Stop!” She shouted, throwing a burst of black energy into the sky. The people around her quieted. Finally, a voice from her left whispered, “Now it is certain. There is the dark sorceress. We have reached our promised land!” Cheering burst out from the outsiders as shouts of disagreement came from the city dwellers. Raven circled herself with black energy to block out the noise, and then searched the crowds telepathically. She found a tall, dark haired man in the newcomers’ side that appeared to be their leader; on the other was an angry 40-something motherly figure. Raven frowned as she lifted these people towards her and pushed aside all others. She remembered this woman as one of the people who had wanted her to leave town son after she joined the Teen Titans; saying demons should go to hell, where they belong. Everyone quieted as the Goth set the leaders down. The man bowed slightly to Raven in an awkward fashion - he clearly was not used to such movements.

“I am honored to be in your presence, my lady.” He said before rising. “I am not worthy of your recognition.”

“Go ahead, suck up to the demon!” The woman shouted angrily. “You should get along quite well - freaks with freaks!” Raven frowned slightly. This was not the type of person or situation to be wasting energy over.

“Just explain why you’re fighting and what you” - she pointed to the man - “are doing here.” The man bowed once again, and started his story.

“I am Father Michael.” He started, pronouncing his name ‘Meekhaielle.’ “My people are known as the Gedians. We have been searching the planet for the place prophesized to become our home for many generations. The only clue we had as to where our home would be is the following poem:

Five guard it
Save the earth from evil’s blight
Each has a special duty
To protect our people’s light

“When we heard of the Teen Titans, we began our journey here. And once we came into this place, we found that these people did not appreciate our being here. We argued our case, and then you came to our rescue. At that point, we became positive this was our promised land.” The moment he finished, the woman burst in.

“Promised land?! Give me a break. You just want to take over the town, like all the other freaks around here” - a glare towards Raven - “and then drive us out. We were minding our business, doing what we always do, when these freaks suddenly walked up the street, calm as you like, humming some wacko song or another. We weren’t going to let our town be taken over so easily, now were we?” She continued on without letting someone answer her question. “No, we weren’t. We retaliated and refused to let them any farther in the city. Then you showed up.” Raven frowned.

“I see...well, I’ll need to take you two with me.” She stood up and broke the barrier around them.

“Oh no you’re not! I’m not going anywhere with a freak and a half demon! For all I know, you could take me to your home world.” Raven remained immovable.

“Then choose someone else to go in your place. A second-in-command, if you will.” The upset motherly figure shook her head wildly.

“No one else knows the situation like me! Have that Robin boy bring me to our discussion area. Now there’s a nice young man just trying to protect others, unlike some people.” There was obvious emphasis on the word ‘some,’ and Raven knew who this woman was talking about. She growled in her head and connected her communicator to the tower.

“Robin? You there?” The Boy Wonder appeared on screen.

“Report, Raven. What’s taking so long? We thought you’d be done by now.” Beast Boy popped up behind Robin and held up a bunch of old, rank socks wrapped in a bundle.

“Put the pedal to the metal, Raven! Cyborg ’n I need you to referee the lightning round!” Suddenly, the middle-aged woman pushed herself in front of Raven and barked at the teens. Robin and Beast Boy simultaneously muttered “Oh.”

“Freak! There are some things in life more important than the “lighting round,” and getting even more freaks run out of town is one of them!” Her tone of voice suddenly turned honey-sweet. “Now Robin. Be a dear and come out here and pick me up so I can...discuss things with Father Michael here.” Robin muttered something and headed out of the room. Beast Boy looked around nervously. Being stared at by a woman who regularly called him a ‘freak’ was rather awkward.

“So...heh heh. Uh...Raven, can you come back and referee now?” Raven rolled her eyes and cut the connection.
