Ok, there should be more to this chapter, lol, but I feel bad because I'm not keeping up… sorry about that! I am very much dreading the writing I'm going to have to do in the next few chapters! It is going to be interesting… ok I would like to thanx again those that have reviewed… (even if it is all done by the same person) I will try to do better in updating…
Chapter Ten
Caves of the Dead
“Can you tell me where we are going?” I asked once slowly making our way through the Dimholt road.
“We are going into the Caves of the Dead,” Aragorn said blankly and I frowned.
Well that's obvious. I thought, and then shrugging my shoulders I smiled slightly, it didn't really matter, I already knew where it was we were going.
“You know,” I said after a while, “I'm still waiting for you to tell me what exactly is all going on.” I said leaning my head out around trying to see if Aragorn was paying attention to me. He didn't answer but I saw a hint of a smile around his lips. I frowned again.
Legolas had insisted that I ride with Aragorn instead of taking Lightfoot, `The horse is just too jumpy,' he had said, `it would not be well if she spooked and threw Drea off.' I had smiled at this; Legolas did not want me to get hurt!
I would miss the horse though. She had after all saved my life… well if you can call it that, of course, though, I was not attached to the horse, and so the urging on Legolas's part was really not necessary.
Night slipped by with me nodding off and on against Aragorn's back, something I was sure he didn't exactly appreciate! And once morning came I was not only tired but very stiff. I thought it very strange that I could sleep in a dream, and wake as if it were really like I was waking up. I couldn't exactly explain it, but I thought it weird!
It was close to about 10 in the morning when conversation took away the empty eerie echoes of nothing.
“Legolas?” I asked with a bit of a smile toward Gimli, “What exactly is the Dimholt road? And why are we taking it?”
Legolas smiled at me, “It is the road leading to where the Caves of the Dead begin,” He said plainly enough.
“Why is it called the Caves of the Dead?” I asked.
There was silence for a moment and then Legolas finally turned his eyes back on me, “They are called the Caves of the Dead because those who dwell in the caves are dead,” he said silently, “Long ago the men of Gondor swore and oath to the last king of Gondor… to come to his aid, to fight. But when the time came, when Gondor's need was dire, they fled… vanishing into the darkness of the mountain. And so Isildur cursed them, never to rest until they had fulfilled their pledge…
Who shall call them from the grey twilight? The forgotten people. The heir of him to whom the oath they swore. From the north shall he come. Need shall drive him. He shall pass the door to the Path of the Dead…”
I shivered, Wow, I thought, that was interesting, and quite disturbing!
Silence then followed and no more questions were asked, and soon after Aragorn instructed us to get off the horses. I was glad to oblige, knowing that this meant we were coming to the next stage!
We walked the horses for about ten minuets, and then I saw it! The entrance! I was excited and almost couldn't contain my glee!
“It says,” Legolas spoke coming up close to the front, “ `The way is shut. It is made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it. The way is shut.'”
The horses spooked then, of course with me being right next to the beasts! And with rearing horse legs in the air, my glee was quickly forgotten! Luckily I didn't scream, but my pale face did not go unnoticed!
“Drea, are you alright!” it was Aragorn and I looked at him in somewhat of shock.
“I… I'm fine…” I said coming out of it, “I'm fine.”
By now the horses where out of sight and Aragorn paid no more attention to them, with one last look at me, he turned his eyes back on the Cave entrance.
“I do not fear death,” he said silently, and I couldn't help but shiver.
“To where ever it may lead,” Legolas then said, and then without warning he grasped my hand tightly, “Stay close to me,” he whispered and then I was pulled, quite willing I might add, in after him.
The cave was dark and foggy, something I found very intriguing! Of course though with my hand in Legolas's my mind was not really on the structure of the cave! I tried not to let my glee show too much, seeing as everyone's mood was really rather dark, so with my quickly growing acting skills, I matched theirs.
Somewhere along the way, not entirely sure where or how, Aragorn and Legolas had picked up two fiery torches, and it was only when the light casting from then fell on a bundle of skulls, that I noticed the torches. I stared at the skulls in wonder, feeling somewhat entranced by them.
“Are you all right,” I heard Legolas whisper close to my ear as he then ran his thumb over my hand in his, “your skin is cold… Drea?”
I managed to pull my eyes away from the skulls and then blushed slightly up into Legolas face, “I'm sorry,” I said slightly my eyes traveling to the skulls again, “there is something strange about them…”
“Don't look at them, Drea,” he said causing my eyes to return to his.
“Alright,” I whispered.
“What is it? What do you see?” Gimli then said in a hoarse voice, and Legolas turned his attention on the dwarf.
“I see shapes of men… and of horses.”
“Where?”
Legolas turned his eyes on me, then back on the dwarf, “The dead are following,” he whispered, “they have been summoned.”
Gimli's eyes grew wide, “The dead? Summoned?”
Legolas tightened his hold on my hand as he then led me on after Aragorn, us leaving poor Gimli still mumbling about the dead.
“Legolas!”
We walked for a while more, my eyes constantly going over the large expanse of the cave… the shadows… and the darkness. I was beginning to get a little spooked! Legolas kept hold of my hand in a death grip, and more then once Aragorn turned and saw it. His eye had an unreadable look to them, and I couldn't tell if he was displeased or what. Gahhh! Why does Aragorn have to be so unreadable? I thought about that a moment, Well… I suppose they all are unreadable… I shrugged my shoulders; I guess it didn't really matter.
After a long draw of silence I managed to have the wits scared out of me as I suddenly had a pale wispy hand thrown in my face! I gasped very loudly, and was only thankful I didn't scream!
“It's alright,” I heard Aragorn say, “let's just walk quickly.”
And that's when the crunching was heard. I groaned inwardly at the prospect of walking on human skulls, and I was sure my face showed it!
“Do not look down,” Aragorn said.
Yet I found it very hard to listen…
We were finally at the large dead castle, which I assumed was where the dead people lived…? Wasn't so sure though… I was a little excited… ok I was very excited! This is where I would see my very first ghost! I couldn't help but smile.
“Who enters my domain?” a voice echoed around us and I stared wide-eyed around us, and that's when I saw him. He seemed to just have appeared from out of thin air… well I guess that is exactly what he did. I didn't want to miss a single thing so I made sure I kept my eyes focused on the ghost. It was all really rather exciting!
“I do,” Aragorn said facing the ghost with narrowed eyes, “one who would have your allegiance.”
The ghost gave somewhat of a smile, something that sent shivers through my spine, “The Dead do not suffer the living to pass,” he whispered back with quiet force.
“You will suffer me.”
Then the ghost laughed, quite an unnerving thing to hear, and with his laugh came a thousand more ghost! Tons more! They surrounded us now, and even though I was excited and could feel my pulse beat in my ears, it was rather an odd feeling. Gimli was scared, that was obvious, Legolas and Aragorn seemed calm, if not a little agitated. I though, well I think I was enjoying it all a little too much.
“The way is shut…” the head ghost then began to chant, “it is made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it. The way is shut…” he paused there as he took a step closer to Aragorn, “Now you must die…”
