The screeching of tires was the last thing I heard before that sound… that bone crushing sound of death. I hadn't even seen the crash. I turned toward the scene from up on my perch. There was blood, so much blood! I should be used to this by now. I hopped down, walking toward the two cars. All were dead or dying … and none worth salvation. With a heavy sigh I turned to walk away, but something caught my eye. Quickly I turned back … there in the eyes of Leo (the young man who had caused the accident) were tears … I stared in awe! Looking into the depths of his soul through those tear-stained portals I saw just how fragile he was. Racked with a strange feeling …I walked to his side. I knew he couldn't see me … but he seemed to look right into my eyes. Biting into my lower lip … drawing my own blood, hot tears rolling down my cheeks. Knowing I could never go back to the life I had known … I lay my hand upon his shoulder. Slowly his crimson blood withdrew back into his broken body. The warmth of his aura was the last to return … I hid myself away, not even wanting to see his reaction. I don't think I could handle it if he wished for death.

Leo awoke to a horrendous scene … he knew he had caused this. All were dead … and he hadn't a scratch. He touched the face of his fiancé, smearing blood down her cheek like a single red tear. She was in the passenger seat. His whole body shook with sobs. He knew full well how suspicious this all was … he was perfectly fine … but this wasn't the sort of accident people walk away from. The sounds of distant sirens broke this train of thought and before he contemplated the consequences … he ran. He ran so far, tears still running down his face, the salty taste invading his dry mouth. It began raining … every drop seemed to fall to earth in slow motion. His foot found a puddle causing water to shoot up like an explosion. The rain crashed down on him … mixing with his tears … diluting them …

From above I watched, a safe distance away. Even so far away, his pain seemed to invade my body making me shudder. I watched silently as he ran to his apartment. The stinging of tears still in my eyes … had I fallen? Why do I care so much for him … he was deemed unworthy of salvation … NO! That couldn't be true! After looking into the depths of his soul he deserved to be saved more than anyone else! I wrapped my arms around my body slowly rocking, on my perch, high above. Soaking up the rain.

Leo ran to his apartment, throwing open the door … he ran to the bathroom, purging his dinner … his alcohol. He splashed himself with cool water. He looked at himself in the mirror … tears began rolling down his face again … his shoulder's shaking uncontrollably. Next Saturday was the day … of his wedding. He felt his knees fall out from under him. He sat there on the cold bathroom floor crying out his frustration… WHY echoed in his mind…

Pressed up against his door I felt him ask … even I didn't know the answers. I could feel his sorrow, even through the pine door. I listened to the soft rhythm of his sobs … matching in time with my own … I slid down the door … curling up into a ball.

Dark thoughts began to circulate in Leo's mind … his eyes shadowed by his water and blood soaked hair. His crying stopped… silently he stood up. Leaving the dim florescent bathroom. He stood in the hallway for what felt like an eternity … he wasn't sure If he could do it…

Suddenly I heard nothing … the silence burned my ears. I entered the apartment … then I saw him … sitting on the floor by the couch. His beautiful lips wrapped around the barrel of a handgun … the sudden realization of what he was about to do … I ran to him! A fear I had never felt in my life had taken over my body … causing me to get involved … I shouldn't get involved but …

I pulled the gun out of Leo's mouth just as he pulled the trigger.

It felt as though someone had punched me in the stomach. I looked down to see myself bleeding profusely. The light of my blood lighted my face … for the first time … he saw me! His face showed how shocked he was … his eyes widened as tears began to well up again. I looked down at him … tears rolling down my face. I smiled weakly as my blood over flowed from my pale lips. I fell into his arms; he didn't know what to say… he just held me. I was the happiest I had ever been just feeling his arms around me. Tears began running down his face heavily. I reached up with a bloodied hand … whipping it away…

"Are you sad? Are you holding yourself? Are you locked in your room? … " I said weakly … I coughed up more blood it was running down my chin now. I looked up to see him nod slightly …

"You Shouldn't Be!" I said honestly … I saw his eyes widen at my words … but my eyelids grew heavy and soon I could no longer see him. I felt gentle lips pressed against my own and then ………. Nothingness ………
