Chapter 1
In a grass field right next to the town, as the sun is starting to set, two teenagers – a boy and a girl, 17 years old – sit and watch the reddish orb sink from the sky.“They say that a red sun is the mark of death to come.” Said the girl, folding her silky brown hair behind her ear.
“I doubt that any death would come to anyone in our town.” Replied the boy. He had messy black hair, and was wearing some pretty formal clothes, as was the girl.
“I hope you’re right…”
Aiden Drayson and Brin Tanizen. They’ve been friends ever since they met in their childhood. But now that they were older, both of them felt they could be more than friends. Only neither of them say anything, because they’re worried that the other won’t have the same feelings, and that would ruin their friendship. So they continue on as best friends, each hoping that fate will one day present them what they secretly desire.
As they watch the last few seconds of the sun setting, a younger boy shows up – Aiden’s little brother, Kilik. He was 15 years old and had black hair like his older brother, only it was much shorter.
Kilik approached Aiden and said, “Mom sent me to come and find you.”
“Does she want me to go home?” Aiden asked.
“No she just wanted to know where you were.”
Aiden hesitated before replying, “That seems kinda pointless…”
“I was thinking the same thing, but she wanted to know where you were and told me to look for you.” He paused for a few seconds before finishing, “Maybe she was just trying to get rid of me.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised.” Aiden chuckled. Kilik had a sour look on his face as Brin was getting up from her seat on the ground and facing the direction of the town with a worried look on her face.
Kilik didn’t notice Brin’s expression and started to say something, but Aiden cut him with a sharp, “Quiet!” He got up and looked at Brin, “What’s wrong?”
She didn’t say anything at first, but after a few seconds her blue eyes met Aiden’s, “The town…” She trailed off, unable to finish her sentence, but she didn’t need to. Aiden and Kilik quickly spun their heads around to see thick smoke coming from their home.
The town was on fire!
Aiden launched into a full sprint without hesitation, Kilik and Brin starting after him. They ran across the field until they reached the town a few minutes later. They didn’t see anyone in the dirt streets – friend or foe – but they continued running, right into the front door of Aiden and Kilik’s burning house.
Brin was skeptical about going in, but followed nonetheless. They used their shirtsleeve to cover their mouth and nose from the smoke. Aiden lead their navigation through the house, until they finally found them, Aiden and Kilik’s parents. They were lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
The three teens were horrified, Brin broke out into to tears as Aiden and Kilik stared at their parents with their mouths open in shock. They were all oblivious to the fire the surrounded them.
“Aiden…” A hoarse voice said. Brin’s tears broke away as she, Aiden, and Kilik all looked in the direction of the man they thought was dead.
“Dad!” Aiden and Kilik shrieked at the same time. Their father was still holding on to life for a few more minutes.
“Aiden, son… go to the temple… the legend… your fate…” His voice faded away and he died, gone from this world, and they didn’t even know why.
“Alright…” Aiden whispered to himself, then spoke louder to Brin and Kilik, “You heard him, we’re going to the temple.”
“But what if the people who did this are still out there?” Brin asked, her voice shaking.
“We’ll have to watch out for them then.” Aiden replied as he began to walk away from his dead parents and headed for the door. Brin began to follow her friend at once, but Kilik took another few seconds to take a last look at his mother and father before exiting the burning house with the other two.
