Fan Fiction ❯ Forest of Autumn ❯ Forest of Autumn ( One-Shot )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
A boy wanders through an autumn-burnt forest. It's dawn. The sky is becoming darker by the minute. The boy is running away from his family, which he deems to make him suffer, despite the fact that they simply make him do chores and nothing more. He sees the shadow of a large flying creature-- much larger than any bird or bat -- on the ground. He doesn't wish to look behind him and learn what kind of a creature could cast such a massive shadow. However, his curiousity compells him to look. All he sees is a single black feather falling to the ground. No shadow.

He hears wings flapping rapidly, and a black blur catches his eye. Once he looks, he sees only the trees and the ground. The sky in this area is covered by the leaves on the towering trees. A rank odor is in the air, as if someone left food to rot. The boy looks around, trying to find the flying beast.

"Boy." Someone says, startling him.

The boy is relieved when he sees a woman standing near him rather than a massive beast.

"Boy." The woman repeats again, louder than last time.

"What?"

"What are you doing away from home at this time?"

"I don't have a home anymore... My family abandoned me." The boy lies.

"Oh?" She didn't seem to believe him. "Surely you don't mean to be without shelter at night. You should know how cold it gets. Come with me, you may stay in my home for the night."

She walks to a strange group of trees. They are bent over, so their tips are touching a rock on the other side of them. The boy follows her, not wanting to be in the forest alone any longer. Or maybe that's just what he wants; to be alone in this forest. To be alone would be without bloodthirsty beasts out to devour him.

The woman lifts up a white blanket of fur, and waits for the boy to go through the entrance to her "home". She follows him, and allows the fur to drape over the entrance. Her home is quite small. The floor and two walls are made of rock, the other two walls are made of the bent trees. The roof is also made of the bent trees. The bent trees have fruit growing on them. The boy did not expect the trees to still be alive, even after being bent like that.

He takes another look at the woman who had taken him in. She has black hair that is up in a ponytail, she wears a lavender tube top and a long black skirt. What she wears doesn't make him worry at all, it's her face. Her eyes are emerald, and she has much eyeliner on. She also has a single tattoo of a teardrop under her left eye. Her face is quite chilling. The boy is pulled away from his thoughts when his stomach grumbles. He hadn't eaten for a while now.

"Um.. Miss?" He asks nervously.

"Hm?" She quickly responds.

"Do you have any food I could have? I haven't eaten all day."

"Yes, if you like apples."

She reaches up to a round fruit hanging from the tree, and pulls it off. She hands it to him. He takes it and eats it rather fast. When he finishes, he tries to sleep. Yet for some reason, he is unable to. The woman knows this.

"Boy," She says, "do you know of demons?"

"Yeah, they're evil things with magical powers."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah."

"Who told you this?"

"Some.. teacher guy."

"It's night.."

"And?"

"You're a liar. You were not abandoned, nor have you fasted the whole day. And you know that teacher of yours? He's wrong. Demons don't have 'magical powers', and nobody could possibly know if something's evil or not. And surely not all of one specie could possibly be evil."

The boy gets up, and looks at the woman fearfully. She's glaring at him.

"H-how do you know I lied?" He stammers.

"Oh, I have my ways. It's just one little thing being a demon of truth gives." She smiles in satisfaction at scaring the boy.

"You're joking.."

She smiles again. "Nope. I'm feeling rather hungry now, I truely haven't eaten this whole autumn. You may wonder why, I can easily explain. You see, this is The Forest of Autumn. Many people would avoid this place. Why? Because they know of me. However, in autumn, even those who do not know of me avoid this place. Many people believe the goddess of death resides in this place. And some believe that autumn is the harvest-season of the goddess of death."

The boy stares at her in horror. A small bit of him still believes this is either a joke or a dream.

The woman continues. "And the funny thing is, they're all scared of me, when really, they should fear the actual goddess. Not a mere demon like myself."

"You.. you're going to kill me, aren't you? That's..evil!"

She glares at him now. "Tell me, how is killing lesser beings to keep yourself alive evil? Hm? That's right, it's not. It's needed for some to survive. Humans do it aswell."

The boy just shakes his head and runs for it. He runs as fast as he can, his heart is pounding not only from running, but from the fear he dealt with back in the womans house, and the fear he deals with at this very moment. He also fears running straight into a tree, he cannot see in the complete darkness. He can't continue running. The extreme cold of night is slowing his movement, and his heart is beating so fast he feels it's about to burst. He falls, and simply lays there as quietly as he can.

But his wheezing betrays him, and before long, a massive black creature is looming over him. Its lime green eyes seem to glow. It seems to be an oversized wolf with talons rather than claws, and wings. He rolls onto his stomach, not allowing himself to look at it any longer.

"I saw you wandering in the forest, and I led you here, to the heart of it. Nobody can hear you scream here."

The boy whimpers and braces himself. He knows she's right. He has this strong feeling that she's sadistic aswell. He's right.

His screams echoed out through the forest, but like she said, nobody would hear him.
