Fan Fiction ❯ Get a Clue: Your Best Friend Loves You ❯ One-shot ( Chapter 1 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
AN: This is my first original fan fiction, so keep that in mind. I'm the only person who has edited it, so I may have made quite a few mistakes. These characters are all mine and as far as I know, so is the plot. I would also like to say that I've upped the rating to keep my story on MM. It's better to be safe than sorry. Other than that, I hope you enjoying reading this fic as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Get a Clue: Your Best Friend Loves You
I'd known him my whole life. He was my best friend. He also happened to be the boy I'd been in love with since almost the first time I saw him. His name was David and in my eyes he was perfect. Sweet, sensitive, funny, and hot; David was all of these things.
Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one to notice these characteristics in my best friend. The proof of this was the string of women throwing themselves at him, ranging from freshmen girls to middle aged housewives - no joke. With all of those ladies after him, was it a wonder that he didn't notice how much I loved him? Like all men, David was clueless to that which was right in his face and I…I didn't have the heart to ruin what we had by cluing him in. So, I buried my feelings the only way I knew how - by making myself so busy that I stopped thinking about it, and fastidiously making sure he never knew my feelings. Things got especially bad in high school, but it wasn't until my junior year that it started to become difficult for me to hide my feelings about him. My junior year is when this story begins.

Julie had always been a shy, independent girl. In her whole life, she'd only had a handful of friends. Out of them, her two best friends were David and Lily. It seemed like the three of them had been best friends their whole lives, only living a few minutes away from each other. It also seemed like Julie had loved David equally as long as they'd been friends. Julie knew girls loved David, oh yeah, she knew. She was also very aware of how much closer to David she was than any girlfriend he'd ever had. But even though Julie knew all of these things, she still kept her feelings carefully hidden from him. She was, in fact, so successful with that endeavor that the only person who knew something of how she felt was Lily. As far as Julie was concerned, that was how things would remain.
It wasn't until a crisp, September morning that things began to change. Walking to school was one of Julie's least favorite things to do. In fact she hated to do it so much, that this occurrence was very rare. Lily had had an early doctor's appointment that morning, so she couldn't ride to school with her. Normally, an early appointment wasn't a big deal, as she could always bum a ride with David to school, but when she'd called his house, David's mother had told her he'd already left. With no car of her own, Julie was left with walking as her only option.
Feeling lazy, Julie took a shortcut through Mr. Dean's yard, which reduced the walk by about ten minutes. At the corner of his lawn, she heard a voice that made her pause. Was that David's laughter she'd just heard? Who was that he was with? “Thanks for picking me up Dave-e-e-y,” a girl's voice simpered. Wait! She knew that voice.
“No problem Alicia.”
Alicia Michaels. Julie's heart dropped. Alicia was the female equivalent of David. Almost perfect, she was smart and beautiful, but catty to a point where girls at school avoided her. Ducking behind Mr. Dean's recently pruned hedges, Julie felt like James Bond. Stifling a hysterical laugh with her hand, Julie listened to what Alicia was saying, “…thought you always drive Jennifer or Jane or whatever her name is to school.”
“Who Julie?” David asked.
“Yeah, her.” Alicia's voice made the already chilly morning seem colder.
“Oh, my other best friend, Lily, is going to drive her.”
It seemed to Julie that he'd forgotten Lily's early appointment, though how he could've was a mystery to her. Lily had complained every five minutes for the past four days about how much she hated the dentist. Could it be he'd blown her off for Alicia? The revelation hit Julie like a cement truck and in a detached sort of way, she noticed her breathes were coming out in short, wheezy, gasps. `Pull yourself together Julie! You're just overreacting. Wait until you get to school and ask him what's going on before freaking out.' Firming her resolve, Julie walked a few more steps before she heard what else was being said. “We don't have to go to school quite yet, do we Dave-e-e-y?”
Julie's blood boiled at Alicia's nickname. Even in jest, David had never allowed Julie to call him `Dave-e-e-y'.
“'Course not, Ally. In fact, I know this great place on Lookout Point Road that I know you'll love.”
“K!”
`She's one of those people that would abbreviate her words, even when she's talking,' Julie thought. `And David had better not be talking about OUR spot. The one we found when we were driving around together the day David got his license!'
“Oh Dave-e-e-y! You're so naughty!” David just laughed at that.
“You got that right. The bluff we're stopping at is called Window Fog Point. Care to guess why?”
Alicia just giggled (that giggle was really getting on Julie's nerves) and slapped him playfully on the arm. “Let's go, Davey-boy.”
The two of them got into his car and sped off to what Julie's barely functioning brain had previously termed as `their place'.

“So THEN he said `You got that right. The bluff we're stopping at is called Window Fog Point. Care to guess why' and she said “Let's go Davey-boy' and giggled.
Lily and Julie sat at lunch discussing what Julie had witnessed earlier that morning. Lily had been highly sympathetic of her best friend's plight. Well, at first she was shocked, then sympathetic, and then she wanted to `go kick his ass'.
“I can't believe he said that. It doesn't even sound like the David we know. What's gotten into him? I mean, doesn't he know what a whore Alicia is?”
“If what I heard this morning was any indication, Alicia's virtue does not rate high on his priority list,” Julie grumbled.
“Do you want me to kick him in the -”
“No Lily,” Julie interrupted. As much as she appreciated Lily's enthusiasm, Julie wasn't in the mood to listen to her tirade.

The ten minute bell rang, signaling lunch would soon be over. Julie and Lily were walking to their lockers when they saw David - with Alicia. There they were smashed against the wall, making out…RIGHT…ON...JULIE'S…LOCKER. At that moment, something snapped inside Julie.
*DREAM SEQUENCE*
:Wild African Tribal Music Plays:
Julie let loose a lion's roar and pounced on the other lioness, Alicia. David watched, stupefied, as his `best friend' clawed out the eyes of his `girlfriend', not sure whom to help. Before he was able to decide, Julie ripped off Alicia's head and went after David, determined to tear off his -
*END DREAM SEQUENCE*
Shaking her head to clear the violent musings occurring in her mind, Julie tried to think of something to pry the two apart. `A crowbar perhaps?' she mused. Instead, she cleared her throat, which, to no one's surprise, failed. Before she could say something, David opened his eyes and looked at both Lily and Julie. It was almost comical, the way his eyes widened, his body stiffened, and he tried to pull away from Alicia, but to no avail. Alicia's tongue was permanently crammed down David's throat, judging by the gurgling noises he was making. In a last, desperate attempt to free himself, David bit down on Alicia's tongue. She yelped and pulled away. Angrily she said, “What the hell was that for?”
Lily pointedly cleared her throat at that moment, causing everyone to turn and look at her. “That was one of the most scarring experiences of my life. Alicia, I have to hand it to you - you put the `whore' in `horrifying'.”
“Uhhh…WTF,” Alicia said, her face contorted into a snarl, “Dave-e-e-y, are you just going to stand there and let HER talk to ME like that?”
Alicia's voice had risen to such a piercing level that Julie wanted to cover her ears. Glancing over at David, she noticed that he was…laughing? “Dave-e-e-y, why are you laughing?” Alicia stamped her foot on the ground and pouted. “Fine. If that's the way you feel, we're through!” Turning on her heel, Alicia glared at Lily and Julie, before gliding down the hall.
“Alicia - wait!” David called after her. “I'm sorry. I didn't mean it!”
“What a whore,” said Lily. “David, care to explain why you are with Alicia?”
“No. It's none of your business. And Julie what crawled up your ass and died?”
“Huh?”
“You really upset Alicia when -”
“Whoa, timeout,” Lily interrupted. “I was the one who called Alicia a whore. Julie didn't do any-”
“Lily, just go be a bitch with Julie and leave Alicia and me the hell alone.”
Julie stared at the person who looked like her best friend. `What can I say to that?' she thought. `I didn't do anything.' Before she could form a sentence in her head, Julie realized that her throat had constricted with tears. Then she said the three words she would have thought impossible only yesterday, “I hate you.”
Both Lily and David were struck by what she said. It didn't even sound like Julie talking. Silently they watched in astonishment as Julie turned on her heel and walked down the hallway.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A week passed…The most torturous, grueling week of Julie's life. She'd never noticed before how much she had come to rely on David before that week. However, besides coming to this realization, she'd also done some soul-searching herself. Julie knew that because she'd relied on David so much, she'd never had to make new friends or try new things. He was always there for her, and although she knew it wasn't his fault, she couldn't help but think that if it hadn't been for their fight, Julie would never have known these things about herself. It felt good. And for once, David wasn't the one to make her feel that way.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Lily put up with the feuding silence between her two best friends for a week - that was it. `Even though Julie and David are both being asses about this, one of them is going to have to say sorry first, and that's going to be David. Julie has kissed up to him and hidden her feelings for too long,' she thought. With that in her mind, she headed towards David's house.
Since it was Saturday, Lily hoped David would be home and not with the Bimbo. Lady Luck seemed to be on her side, as David's car was in the driveway. Parking on the side of the road, Lily walked to his door and rang the doorbell. David answered, holding his finger up to signal her to wait, then talked into the phone at his ear.
“Yeah baby, I'm sorry too…I know I'm an ass…Yeah, yeah, I'll pick you up at seven…Yeah, me too…Bye.”
Hanging up, he looked at Lily and said, “If it's about Julie, I don't want to hear it.”
“Tough, `cuz you're gonna listen. So sit down and shut up.”
“Whatever, I have to leave in thirty minutes to pick up Ally, so make it quick.”
“Gah, you're such a dick, d'ya know that?”
“Been told so before, yeah. Look. I don't know what Julie's so upset about. Why can't she be happy for me? I have a girlfriend I really…care about.”
“You're really thick, you know that?”
“Wha- ”
“Allow me to let you in on a little secret. And I'll speak slowly so you understand the first time. Julie. Is. In. Love. With. You.”
If David hadn't been seated before, he would be now. Lily would've laughed at his resemblance to a fish if she hadn't known how serious this conversation was. `Julie is going to kill me,' Lily thought. `I hope she realizes what a good friend I am before and not after.' Turning her attention back to David, she saw he was still gaping like a fish. “Are you gonna be okay there, Big Guy?”
As if in a trance, he said, “I didn't know. How did I not know?”
“That's one thing the Wise and All-knowing Lily can't tell you, D. But I will give you one last piece of advice before I start charging: Break up with Alicia and go talk to Julie.”
“But how can I, when I've been such a jerk to her?”
“Believe me. That won't be a problem. Trust me. Just try not to screw up this last chance, please.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Driving like the Hounds of Hell were on his tail, David raced to Julie's house, recalling the past few minutes.
“Hey Alicia, I need to…uh, talk to you.”
“What's up Davey-boy?”
“I think we need to break it off.”
“What?!” Alicia shrieked. “How could you do this, to me? It's that Jennifer witch isn't it?”
“Her name's Julie and this doesn't have anything to do with her!”
“Ooooh…I hate you! Go to hell!”
“I'm sure I'll see you there. I feel sorry for any boyfriend you have in the future. I used to think you were something great, but this little conversation has opened my eyes.”
Seeing the familiar turn-in to Julie's subdivision broke David out of his reverie. Suddenly he felt nervous. Very nervous.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Julie lay on her bed, tossing Oliver, her blue teddy bear, into the air. Her parents were gone for the weekend, visiting friends, so she was able to mope around the house in peace. Glancing at the clock, she noticed the doorbell had been ringing as well as the phone, for about ten minutes. Instead of answering one of the two, Julie just took the phone off the hook and shut her door, continuing to ignore both.
Suddenly, the doorbell stopped ringing. `Thank God,' she thought. Moments later, there was a tapping sound on her window. `Are those rocks hitting my window?' Getting up and shuffling to the window, she opened the curtains. David! She opened the pane, then said, “What do you want?”
“I need to talk to you.”
“That's too bad. I wanted to talk to you last week, but you blew me off. Doesn't feel very nice, now does it?”
“Look, I'm sorry. I broke up with Alicia.”
“Why?”
“What do you mean, `why'?
“I mean, what made you do that?”
“Well, Lily sorta told me some stuff.”
“Oh, so she made you come and apologize. Great. Well, I forgive you. There. You've done your duty, now get off my property.”
Shutting her window, she collapsed back on the bed, clutching Oliver. “Oliver, you'd never screw me over like David did, would you?” she said to the bear.
“Who's Oliver?”
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” Julie beat her attacker over the head with Oliver, screaming the whole time.
Grabbing the hand holding the stuffed animal, David said, “Julie, stop. It's me David.!”
“Oh. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. Wait. What are you doing in my house?”
“Well, I'd already figured you'd want to do this the hard way, so I knew I'd have to do something drastic like climb up to your window,” he grinned.
Julie rolled her eyes, but kept her silence. David took this as a sign to go on with his explanation. “Anyway. Like I said, I broke up with Alicia when someone brought something to my attention.”
“And what would that be?”
“I think I'm…uh, in love with you.”
“What exactly did Lily tell you?”
“She told me you were in love with me.”
“So you just decided to take it for granted that I love you.”
“You mean you don't love me?”
“Nope. I don't love you.”
“You're lying.”
“What? No I'm not!”
“Yes, you are. When you lie your face gets pink and you can't look the person you're lying to in the eye.”
“How'd you know that?”
“I know you. Do you think after being friends since grade school, I wouldn't notice the little things, like how you look when you lie?”
“I - not really.”
“I never told Alicia that I loved her.”
“Why?”
“Because I love you. I have for a long time. I just didn't know it before Lily said something. I couldn't say something to Alicia that was meant for you.”
Ignoring his words as if he'd never uttered them she said, “You know I've realized some things this past week. I never new how dependent I was on our friendship before you stopped talking to me. There were things I didn't try and people I didn't make friends with because I had you. Our fighting opened my eyes and made me see you're not perfect.”
“Thanks.”
“All my life I've thought of you as this god. In my eyes you could do no wrong. Would you want someone who only loved the idea of you or who loved you, flaws and all?”
“I don't care. I just want you to love me back,” David was beginning to sound desperate.
“You really are as thick as Lily says aren't you?”
“What are you talking about?”
“You dummy, of course I love you. The most important thing I realized after our fight is that no matter what you do, I always will.”
And with that Julie pulled David's astonished face down and kissed him. What could have been hours later, Julie pulled away and said, “Remind me to get Lily a really good birthday present.”
