Revelations
That night Dante was kneeling on top of Titans Tower in his pose: one knee down, shirt off, one arm resting on his other knee with hand on the handle and the other on top of that hand, the sword Rebellion held out in front with the blade in the roof, and his amulet around his neck. He was looking at the moon which is one of his favorite things to do when he was troubled inside. He felt at peace with himself when he did this instead of the boiling anxiety or fear or hate for that matter that he usually felt when troubled. This night someone else joined him.
“Is that you, Raven?”
“Yeah, mind if I join you?”
“Sure take a seat, best view in the house right here.” Dante said, but he didn't mean anything sexual by it. That was unusual for Dante to talk to a woman without trying to hit on her. Raven sat down beside him and began to float as she does when she is ready to meditate.
“Thanks for saving me earlier tonight.”
“No problem. I couldn't just stand around and let a teammate get hurt.”
Raven smiled
“Do you stare at the moon often.”
“When I need to, if I have worries. It comforts me.”
“Who are you? What's your story?”
“I'm Dante, born of a demon father and human woman, same as you.”
“Well yeah, but your father is not a demon god.”
“No, he hated what the demons stood for.”
“Who was he? Do you remember him.”
“I remember him, but you would never believe me if I told you who he was.”
“Why wouldn't I?”
“I just have a feeling. Would you believe me if I told you he was a great swordsman, and rebelled against the Underworld.”
“Your father must have wanted to be like the legend.”
“What legend?”
“The legend of Sparda- the lone demon swordsman who fought against the demons for the safety of mankind, and won when he defeated the dark emperor and sealed the portal to the Underworld-I was told that story on Azarath, but I was also told it was just a legend made up by humans as hope. It was to remind humans that no matter how bad things may get there is still hope, but it was just a story.”
Dante had a slightly devilish smile on his face when she finished.
“Dante what are you smiling about.”
“It's more than just legend. It's truth. I am the son of Sparda. The demon that sealed the portal to the Underworld by giving up his sword, his demon form, using two amulets, and sacrificing the blood of a virgin priestess. That was Sparda, and he is my father.”
“Impossible. If he gave up his demon form then how could you be a half-demon?”
“He gave up his actual demon form not his immortality because the blood in his veins was still absolute demon. Even on Earth he still had strength and powers more than any normal human and most of all he did exist even though I barely remember him. He left tons of notes of the battles he had been in, people he had met, things he had discovered. He left notes about some of the deeds of his friends, places he had been, different religions, places of powers, demons, gods, prophecies, and many other things. He documented as much as he could because he knew that when he left this world his sons would have to take his place which they could not do unless they had as much of his knowledge as possible. It was through his notes that I learned of the mark of Scath and who Trigon was, and how Trigon was to be freed.”
Raven was overwhelmed by what she had just heard. The words went deep into the roots of her soul and she realized that he was telling the truth. She then was somewhat star struck, I guess you could say.
“I can't believe it I am sitting next to the son of the legendary Sparda. All this time I thought it was a myth, but it is true. I've seen drawings of him before, but I always was told that the artist just wanted to show a picture to give the myth a form.”
“And I can't believe you are actually warming up to me. Why did you come up here.”
“I don't know really. I just had this feeling to come talk to you. It's weird; I I have never met another half demon before. No one has ever called me that as a matter of fact, so I never thought of it that way.”
“I'm sorry if I upset you by calling you that. I could understand why.”
“No it's not that it upsets me, it's just that I never thought of it in that way. I always felt so different, I've always felt creepy and out of place because no one was ever like me, except for one person but we won't talk about that right now, but now that I see another person just like me I find myself even more weird because you are so different from me.”
“Ok I just have to ask: who was this “other person you were talking about?””
“Like I said I don't want to talk about it.”
“Hey come on it can't hurt to tell.”
“Ok it was a wizard or so he said he was one. He said his name was Malchior and was trapped in a book I was reading by a curse from a dragon called Rorek.”
“WHOA hold on a minute don't you mean the wizard Rorek trapped the dragon Malchior in the book?” Dante hit a nerve when he said this.
“I'm getting to that.”
“Ok continue.”
“Malchior switched the names when I was reading the book, so as I was reading he called out to me. He made me feel normal, as if I wasn't creepy. Most of all I almost loved him. I let Malchior out of the book, but when I did he informed me that it had been a trick. Then I was able to place the same curse back on him and trap him back inside the book.”
“Rorek died because of that dragon. My father was there when it happened. They were best friends. He left a note telling all about Rorek and their quests together. Rorek's dying words were “I wish I would have lived long enough to have children so they could have met one of the greatest friend a man can have.” And Sparda said back to him “I will tell my children all about you so that they can know how great of a friend you were to me. Rest in peace my brother.””
When Raven heard this she began to cry, and because she was crying she became even more upset because she knew she could not let her emotions take control.
“I need to leave.” And Raven got up to run off, but Dante grabbed her hand.
“No please stay. The moon is much more soothing with you out here.”
“I can't. I can't because I'm not able to keep my emotions under control right now.”
“What's wrong his showing your emotions?”
“You don't understand. If I don't control my emotions then I will not be able to control the said of me that is Trigon's daughter.”
“I'm sorry, but that doesn't mean you have to go. Stay and talk.”
With that Raven sat back down but was still rattled.
“It's all so much. First the prophecy and my father, then you, and now we are talking about Rorek. It's all getting to me. That's what brought me up here to talk to you. All of this and then you show up, and now I'm more confused. I mean this is not about Rorek. I just wanted to find answers.”
“Answers about what?”
“About you. What I was going to say earlier is that I always feel so creepy and different because there is no one out there like me until you showed up. You are like me, but you are so different. You aren't creepy, you get along great with humans, you aren't dark, you don't have to meditate, you have your powers under control, you can show your emotions, you aren't reclusive. Why do you think we thought you were just a normal human?”
“Because I look human?”
“No, because the only other half-demon any of us have ever known was me.”
Their eyes made contact when she said this and they both quickly looked the other way as people do who begin to have an interest in each other but don't want the other to know. This was followed by a long, awkward moment of silence.
“If you are the son of Sparda then that makes you how old?”
“45”
“What? How is that possible? You look like you are barely 20. Wait a minute didn't Sparda live for almost 2000 years? He has to have more children than just you.”
“Yes it is possible. I look like I'm just barely 20 because I am immortal just like you, and yes he did live for almost 2000 years, but he only had one other child.”
“Have you ever met him?”
“His name was Vergil. We were twins.”
“What happenend?”
“He died.”
“Oh I'm sorry. Forgive me for asking.”
“Nah don't worry about it. You didn't know.”
Raven then had a relieved look on her face, but didn't say nething.
“So what about your mom. She was mortal right?” asked Dante
“Yes. She was involved with the Church of Blood. One night they had a ritual, and summoned Trigon. Trigon appeared in the form of a human and impregnated my mother. He then appeared to my mom as his true self. When she realized what just happened she was on the verge of suicide, but then people from Azarath came and brought her there, and when I was born they raised me until I was 18. My mother is now dead. She died on the day of my 21 birthday along with Azarath when it was destroyed by Trigon. It was on my 21 birthday when Slade came and told me of my destiny.”
“So your father killed your mother and the place of your birth. I'm sorry.” And after saying this Dante became furious, but managed to partially contain his anger. “It's scum like Trigon that make me a devil hunter. He kills with no regard to life. He killed the mother of his on daughter, that bastard. Most demons are like that especially Trigon and his Dark Emperors. Mundus killed my mother, and for that I destroyed him when he tried to open the portal on Mallet Island.”
“You fought Mundus!”
“Yes I have fought Mundus as well as Argosax and Despair. I was the one who also closed the portal on Dumary Island.”
“That was you! You were the great swordsman from the outside! I read about that, but it never gave your name or a description besides what I have already said.”
“Yes that was me. I have sworn to protect the world against evil like that including Trigon. I will swear to protect you even if it means giving up my own life. Trigon will not destroy the Earth, we will make sure of it.”
“It's amazing that you defeated the emperors, but Trigon is their god, they serve him. No one you can defeat Trigon, just like no one can stop the prophecy.”
“Prophecies are not always cut and dry. There may also be more to it. We can only hope.”
“Exactly, we can only hope.”
“Ok we are really getting off onto a gloomy subject so hows about we change it, Ok.”
Raven laughed, and almost instantly her mood changed.
Earlier that night, when Dante saved Raven, she came to realize something. She was worried about the prophecy being fulfilled, the safety of her friends, and the end of the world, but what she was most worried about was dying alone. She did not want to leave this world never having truly loved someone.
Dante and Raven talked for the whole night until the sun came up surprising them both, and causing a long laugh between the two. In Dante's mind he was thinking “This is the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen.”
