Episode 1: The New Kid Arrives; Mayu's Responsibility!

A small angel flew swiftly through the clouds. He carried, in each hand, a soul. He passed through the barrier of darkness, and approached the throne of the fire god. He reached the edge of cloud on which the god floated, bowing his face to it.

“Dear child,” the deep voice boomed, “what is on your mind?”

“Sir…” the angel seemed to be very sad and afraid.

“What ails you, child?”

“It's the souls, sir,” he said, holding the two glowing blobs of light out into the god's view.

“What about them?”

“They…they refuse to continue to the next world. We've tried, sir! But something is holding them back!”

The fire god looked at the souls in surprise. “Why would one not wish to continued to the next world?” He thought for a moment, and then reached out his hand.

What is he doing?” the angel thought.

The two souls floated slowly out of the angels hands, and a bright aura circled them. The auras soon made the shape of bodies.

Oh, I see,” the angel continued thinking, “he's embodying them to see what they looked like on earth.”

The two souls shone through a transparent image of their previous bodies: one, a long-eared girl, the other an orange-eyed boy. The fire god saw these images and gasped.

It can't be…my dear friends…they're unhappy without each other, even in death.” The fire god leaned down and looked into the eyes of the boy. “Hm…” he chucked, “You can't live without her even here, can you?” He looked at them, sympathy in his eyes.

The angel waited to hear his response.

“Give them another chance,” he finally said.

“How's that???” the angel snapped, baffled.

“Give their souls one more chance to live.”

“What do you mean???”

The fire god took the souls in his hands and held them out to the angel.

“But, sir! They have reached Karma! It's time for them to move on!”

“They need one more chance,” he replied once more.

“uh-hu…yes sir,” the angel answered, bowing his head.

And so the souls were sent back into the world into two unborn babies, awaiting their next chance.

Morning dawned over the city as the streets filled with people going about their lives. It was another sleepy Monday morning. In the suburbs, the sound of a loud alarm clock poured out the open window and into the street. It was 7 o'clock a.m.

Mayu reached out from under the covers and slammed an angry fist onto her alarm clock, and turned back over, hoping not to escape her dreams. Suddenly her bedroom door flew open, and her ten-year-old brother stood in the doorway.

“Mayu! Get outta bed! You'll be late for school!”

“I don't care!” she yelled back.

“Time to get up!” her little 5-year-old sister piped, dancing into the room, already dressed.

“Tsuto! Shisa! Get out of my room!” she yelled, sitting up, holding her pillow over her head, ready to throw it.

Then a loud barking white fur ball came running into the room and leaped onto the bed, greeting Mayu with a bright pink tongue.

“Good morning, Sakura,” she smiled. Her siblings were still standing in the doorway. “Well, go on! I'm up!” They turned and ran down the hallway.

Mayu pulled back the covers and slipped her feet into her fuzzy house shoes. Her mother's voice sounded down the hall, “Come on, Mayu! Time for school!”

“I'm coming!” she yelled back. She slid out of bed and walked lazily into her bathroom. She rushed and brushed her teeth and her hair, slipped into her school uniform and put ribbons at the top of each ear. She sighed out of exhaustion. Getting ready so fast in the morning really takes it out of you! She went back into her room and grabbed her school bag, searching through it to make sure she had everything.

“Okay! Ready!” She slung her bag over her shoulder and began to walk out of her room, running into Tsuto.

“You'd better hurry, sis! You'll miss breakfast.”

“Dang! I knew I was forgetting something!” she exclaimed, rushing downstairs to the kitchen. Her mother and baa-san (grandma) were feeding breakfast to her baby sister, Kiki. She saw some toast sitting on the table and grabbed a piece, still running towards the door.

“Mayu!” her mother exclaimed.

“Thanks for breakfast, mom!” she called back, already outside. Her father and jii-san sat in the garage, working on a car.

“Bye dad, bye Jii-san!” she called, running through the garage. They paused in their work and waved.

Mayu reached the sidewalk, looked at her watch, and grinned. She was on time!

“Mayu! Wait up!” a voice called from behind her. She turned around and saw her best friend, Naoko, running towards her.

“Hey, Naoko!” she stopped and waited for her friend to catch up.

“How was your weekend?”

“Oh! Relaxing! How was yours?” Mayu asked.

“Great, until last night. I was up for ever writing that lit. report.”

“HUH!?!?!” Mayu exclaimed, freezing in her tracks.

“Don't tell me…”

“I totally forgot!!! Oh my gosh!!! What'll I do!!!”

They reached a corner, and Naoko helped her distraught friend across the street, where they were met by two other girls.

“Hey Keikou, Kiyera.”

“Mayu, what's wrong?” Kiyera asked, seeing her expression. “You didn't forget about the paper did you?”

“AHHH!!!” she yelled, “I'm gonna flunk! I'm never going to graduate! I'm such a horrible student!!!”

“Aw,” the three girls cried in fake sympathy.

“Sure you will.”

“You just gotta work a little harder.”

“You'll be fine!”

They led Mayu into the gates of the school. “Look,” said Naoko, holding Mayu's watch to her face, “You've still got half and hour before 1st block…you can go to the library and type up the paper, and if you hurry, you can still get to class on time.”

“I'm dead!” she cried.

Keikou opened the school door, “Just go. If you want, we can help you a little.”

“No,” she replied, “It's okay. You guys go ahead to class. I'll be fine.”

“Okay,” they all said.

Mayu turned for the library and the others headed for their classes.

“Oh man…” she sighed, “I'm never gonna make it.”

Finally, she reached the door to the library and opened it, hitting someone on their way out with the door.

“Oops! Sumimasen…” she stopped to find the person she had hit was her cousin, Satoshi.

“Gosh, Mayu, what where you're going!”

“Sorry…”

“No big deal. What are you doing here? Shouldn't be getting to class?”

“I should, but I have a paper I forgot to write this weekend, so I need to do it or I'll fail.”

“Tsk tsk tsk…You're probably the most forgetful person I know.”

“Yeah, well I need to go type it now.”

“Sure. Hey, have you seen Naoko??” she asked curiously.

“Yeah, she's going to first period, doofus. What for?”

“No reason. Okay, have fun being a slacker,” Satoshi said before walking out the door.

“I'm not a slacker! I just…forgot…” Mayu turned and headed to a computer. She sat and typed faster than she had ever typed before. She watched the clock as the bell for first period drew near. Finally, she finished a so-so paper and printed it out. “It's not much…but it's better than a F!” she grabbed it and admired her work.

*RING!!!* “Oh no!” she grabbed her stuff and ran out the door, “I'm late!!!”

She ran down the hall, up the stairs, and down another hall, reaching her first period classroom. The teacher was standing in the doorway.

“Miss Yoshida…”

“*gulp* Konnichiwa, Nomura-san.”

“You're late,” he said, handing her a tardy slip.

Mayu dropped her head, taking the slip of paper from his hand, “Yes, sir.”

Mayu sat quietly in the attendance office waiting for a pass to class. She listened to the random phone calls and conversation the vice-principals were having with the people in front of her.

A lady walked in with an abadoo boy behind her, and handed the person behind the desk a folder. “There's a new student enrolling.”

“Oh, okay, arigato,” the attendance clerk replied, taking the folder.

What? A new student?” Mayu thought.

“This is Takahashi. He's new senior.”

Mayu looked at the new boy. He was already dressed in a school uniform, and had beautiful orange eyes. Mayu's heart skipped a beat. He shifted his eyes and made contact with hers. She froze for a moment. “Oh my gosh! He's looking at me!”

With a huff, the boy turned his head, as to act like he didn't even notice Mayu was there.

What the…what's this guy's problem? What a jerk!”

The attendance clerk snapped Mayu out of her daze, “Yoshida!”

Mayu stood and took the pass from her. “Thank you!” she said, walking toward the door. As she was about to open it, the lady called her back. “What?” “What is it now??”

A vice-principal walked in and stood next to the new boy. “This is Rii Takahashi. Would you mind being his guide and helping him find his way around the school today? He's a new student and needs help finding his way to all his classes.”

“Uh…” “Me? Help that jerk? Yeah right…”

“Rii,” the man continued, “this is Mayu Yoshida.”

Rii walked up to her and smiled, holding out his hand to shake hers. “Yoshida? Nice to meet you. Hajimemashite.”

Mayu looked at him strangely. “Uh…I'm fine?”

He smiled at her and thanked the principal. They left the room, heading back to class. For a few minutes, there was an awkward silence.

“Uh…” Mayu began.

“So where is our class, anyway, Yoshida?”

“Oh. It's upstairs, still a bit further.” There was another pause. “You can call me Mayu, if you want.”

“Okay, Mayu then,” he replied, totally indifferent.

“Can I call you Rii?”

“No.”

“Eh…” she said, still not sure of what to think of this guy.

“So Mayu…”

“It's Yoshida,” she said, angrily.

“Fine, then.”

She stopped walking, so Rii did too. “Well, come on. Aren't you gonna take me to fir…”

“What's wrong with you?!?!”
Rii stared blankly at her for a moment, then doubled over with laughter.

“Wha…!!!” Mayu said, confused, “What's so funny??”

“I'm sorry!” he laughed, “I can't hold it in, anymore! You're so uncool you crack me up!”

“What! You jerk!!”

“What were you in the office for anyway? What's that slip you got?”

“That's none of your business!” she said, turning away from him.

He reached over and grabbed the slip of paper out of her hand, “I'll take that!”

“Hey! Give it!” she cried, reaching for it. Rii put his hand on her forehead, holding her out of the paper's reach.

“Hm, nine tardies, eh?” Mayu quit struggling to get the paper. Rii turned and put the paper in the hand on her forehead, “You should really try to be on time.” He removed his hand and started walking away. Mayu stood there, the paper still stuck to her head, and she was blushing. She watched him walk away. “It's no wonder your so late!” he called back, “Let's go!”

Mayu took the paper off her head and started walking again. Suddenly, she felt herself pulse. She stopped walking and saw that her chest was glowing. There was an orb inside of her, and the light had suddenly become visible. She stood there for a moment and let the feeling pass. She closed her eyes and shook her head. Rii felt it too, and he saw the light. He stopped and looked back at Mayu. They stared at each other for a moment.

Mayu put her hand on her forehead, “Wha…What happened?”

Rii turned and started walking toward the stairs. “What was that? Did she feel it just like I did?”

As they continued walking, Mayu noticed Rii's reaction to what just happened. “Did he feel it too?”

That's never happened before,” they thought simultaneously, “but it just happened to both of us? Who is this person!?!?”
