Nightmares and Letters

A bunch of little kids were playing on a playground. A little girl sat in the dirt across from them watching them play. "Hey Leah, come here. I want to show you something." A black haired boy appeared from behind a slide and waved to the girl sitting in the dirt.

"Okay," the little girl got up and headed over to where the other kids were. "What is it?" She looked around and couldn't see the little black haired kid.

"This!" He jumped out from behind the slide and slugged the girl. She fell down and started to cry. "Oh you're such a baby."

"Why are you so mean to me?" She said rubbing her knee.

"Cause you're a freak that's why." She got up and started to go home. "Where you going? I'm not done yet!" He ran after her and grabbed her arm.

"Stop it." She said trying to pull her arm loose. "Let me go."

"Why? All you'll do is tell your mommy."

She kept struggling in his grasp. "Please stop." The little boy kept hitting her. He slugged her shoulder. "Stop!"

"What are you going to do about it?" He laughed as he slapped her face.

"I said STOP IT!" She changed into her animagi form. Her wings flapped and quickly found the frightened little boy laying on the pavement.

She could see through it's eyes but could not control what was happening. She saw the claws raise. They swiped across his chest. Causing a loud scream. Stop please stop. she tried talking to the animal inside of her. Please don't hurt him! She screamed and it echoed in her head. Although, the beast didn't react in the slightest. It keep slashing at the little boy screams were every other sound she heard. She heard a loud screech and felt it rear back. It lifted one of it's talons. It stared straight down at the bloody little boy. Chest ripped apart and blood everywhere. Please don't! The talons swiped down in slow motion. She closed her eyes and tried to take back control.

"Stop, Please! I'm sorry….I'm Sorry!!!!!!!"

Amalthea woke up in a profuse sweat. She had nightmares about this same incident before but none that were this detailed or graphic. She just sat there and cried. Her pet crup, Demon, lay on her bed by her feet. She covered her ears as she heard the scream echoed inside her head. Demon stretched and looked up at her. He got up and walked over to her. He licked her face and she hugged him tight. "Demon, will these dreams ever stop?"

--------------------------------------------------------

She never could get back to sleep that night. Each time she closed her eyes she saw the face of the little boy and heard his screams. She decided to just get dressed and try to wake up. She opened her closet and looked at all of her clothes inside. She had smelled a faint fragrance coming from downstairs. "Leah dear, breakfast!" That was her mother, Artimis's voice. She loved her mum she was the happiest person you could ever meet.

"Coming." Amalthea called down the hall. She decided to wear her favorite set of robes today, which were her red ones that she got last Christmas. As well as her favorite skirt, a birthday present this year. It was a skirt that she made herself. She was so proud that she made something on her own, she made it her birthday present to herself. She pulled on her socks and grabbed her black shoes. She ran downstairs, her mum hated it when she was late for anything. She was about half way down the stairs and she whistled. Demon came running down after her. They got into the kitchen and she saw that her mum was still cooking. Artimis was standing in front of the stove and was turning over the flapjacks. Her mother was a fairly normal looking lady. She had blonde hair that she kept up in a bun, navy blue eyes, and stood about 5'6".

"Sorry mum, I was getting dressed." She sat down at her normal spot at the table. She looked at the table. It was set for three people but something was missing. "Mum, where's dad?"

"Ah you're father was called out late last night, family was having problems with their hippogriff." Her parents are magizoologists, or wizards that study magical creatures. Amalthea wanted to follow in their footsteps one day. She loved animals and creatures of all kinds. Thought they were fascinating. Her mum came over and placed two flapjacks and a pile of scrambled eggs on her plate, before adding some to her own.

They were in the middle of their breakfast when they heard Demon barking. "Morning sweeties," a man appeared in the top half of their kitchen door. Their kitchen door was one of those doors that were cut in half and you could open the halves separately. Every morning her mother would open the top half to let the cool and fresh air in from off the river. She lived in an area of the wizarding world known as Riverside. It was called this for obvious reasons. There was a large river that ran through the countryside and the land was named after it.

"Morning Dear." Her mother said getting up to kiss Darius. Darius was her father. He was a very handsome man. He was kind of tall standing at about 6 foot. He had Deep green eyes, light brown hair and a athletic build. He played quidditch at Hogwarts for Gryffindor. He was their house keeper. He was one of the best keepers that Gryffindor had. He was on the same team as James Potter, the Gryffindor seeker at the time. James was one of his best friends at Hogwarts and he was horrified to hear of his death about eleven years ago. He still has dreams of them playing quidditch together. Amalthea could hear him talk about them in his sleep.

"Morning dad," Amalthea said throwing her arms around her dad. He greeted her hug with a kiss on the cheek.

"Hope I'm not late for breakfast."

"Only a little Dear," Artimis said. She grabbed the skillet and placed some of the food onto his plate. Darius sat down and opened his napkin.

"So how was it dad?" Amalthea always got excited when her dad came back from a job. She wanted to know everything, each and every detail. "What was the problem?"

"Well," Darius loved the fact that his only child admired him in this way. "The Graces from across town, they had a hippogriff that they were raising. The poor little guy, although 'little' might not be the word. Anyway, the poor little guy wouldn't eat. I had to figure out why." He placed a fork full of flapjacks into his mouth. "These are amazing Dear."

"Thank you." Artimis said as she was washing some of the dishes in their kitchen sink.

"DAD!" Amalthea pulled on her dad's sleeve. "What happened? Did you figure it out?"

"You have acted the same way since you were little," he said looking at her face. "Of course I did. I wouldn't have left if I didn't."

Amalthea smiled. Every time she asked her dad that question, he gave the same answer. But she loved to ask it anyway. She loved her dad and was so happy to hear his stories about Hogwarts. Her mom told stories about her time at Hogwarts, but they weren't as exciting and funny as her dad's. Her dad told stories of teasing some kid named Severus Snape and about his quidditch matches. It was a lot more exciting. "So what was the problem?"

He kept eating his breakfast. He placed another fork full of flapjacks in his mouth. "It was a twisted stomach." He replied trying to keep from spitting out the food.

"That's why we don't talk with our mouths full Dear." Artimis said while washing the dishes.

Amalthea tried hard not to laugh. She didn't want to have her dad get mad at her. "So what are we doing to…" As she said this a large gray owl flew in their window and flew straight at her head. She ducked and it dropped a letter in her hands. It circled the room and flew back out the window. "Mum, dad what is this?"

The letter she held in her hands as addressed to her:

Miss Amalthea Lynn Statton

Room Next to the Study

187 Riverside

It had her full name on it. No one but her parents knew her middle name. It was in Green ink and very fancy looking. She turned the letter over and saw a red colored seal. It had the Hogwarts emblem on it. "Mum, Dad it's my Hogwarts letter!" She was waiting for it for so long. Amalthea had looked for it in each bundle of mail that the owls delivered. She quickly broke the seal and pulled out the parchment inside. She saw the letter and was so excited. She read the letter aloud to her parents. "Dear Miss Statton, We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." Her mother and father were so happy for her. They knew she would get in, but it was exciting nonetheless. "It's signed by Aunt Minerva. She's Deputy Headmistress at Hogwarts?"

Her mum laughed. "What did you think she did? She talks about the school and teaching every time she comes over."

Amalthea didn't say anything. She knew her aunt was a teacher there but not that she was Deputy Headmistress. Amalthea thought that she should have known that however. Her whole family is a long line of Gryffindors. She had a lot to live up to in her family. Three teachers at Hogwarts, a Deputy Headmistress and a former Headmaster! She knew that she was going to love her stay at Hogwarts so much. She looked at the bottom of the letter. "It says that they await our owl and that it should be no later than July 31. Can we send it now?"

"Of course." Artimis said smiling at her daughter. She was so proud of her. "Go get Agervain and send him off." Agervain was her pet owl. She got him on her 10th birthday, and she knew that one day he would come to Hogwarts with her. She ran up stairs still holding the letter. She got into her room and opened Agervain's cage. "Agervain, I've got a job for you. Come here." Agervain flew out of his cage onto her desk. "Send this letter to Aunt Minerva. And you can take your time coming back." She strapped her letter onto his leg and he was off. Demon was still asleep on her bed. He normally goes back to her room to sleep after breakfast.

"Demon great news!" She picked up the sleeping puppy. "I got my Hogwarts letter!" He barked in excitement and licked her face. Amalthea just realized, she never asked when they would go and get her school supplies. "Be right back Demon." He barked and wagged hid forked tail. She ran out of her room and back downstairs. Her parents were now in the living room. "Mum, dad when are we…"

"Next week around Thursday." Darius said thumbing through the most recent issue of The Daily Prophet.

"Thanks dad." She smiled and ran up to her room. "Next week Demon then I'll be all set for Hogwarts."

------------------------------------------------------------

Her mother and father were in the living room. "She's growing up, Darius. And who are we to stop her?"

"I know," Darius picked up a different section of the Daily Prophet and opened it up. "I just want to keep my little girl forever."

"And she will always be your little girl in your eyes. But face it Dear, sometimes they have to grow up."

"I know." Darius smiled, he knew he was being silly. He knew that Amalthea would have a great time at Hogwarts. "I'll get over it."
