Mercy
Damn, my computer erased the original one. It used to feature Nieni a lot more than it is now. I had no patience to try to remember what I wrote before. Sorry Nieni, er, if you wanted it to feature you more. I REALLY WANTED TO... Nevermind. It's really weird anyway. Forget it, read on.
Just randomly, I did a rune stone reading thing for um my muse. Don't know where I got that stuff, but I tried it anyway. Stones from the muse I guess it is called. *shrug* Anyway, I just wanted to see what it said to me. I got the egg, which means potential. I read about it and got more confused. I don't know if I did it right, but apparently I should stop being such a perfectionist. Huh...

Chaos: ... So sad...
Yumy: Where's everyone?
Chaos: They all ran away...
Yumy: Oh... Really... *inches away*

Nieni stared at the drop of water that hung tantalizingly from the ceiling. It refused to fall, and she refused to look away. Croix watched Nieni stare at the drop. Nieni finally blinked for the first time in five minutes, and the drop fell onto her nose. She opened her eyes and cursed.
"I knew it was going to do that, I just knew I was going to miss it!"
Croix stayed where he was. His body felt even lazier than it had before. It took all his effort just to breathe. He could swear his body was moving though, but that couldn't be because he was so tired... But his body was moving. He was slowly approaching the oblivious Nieni. It wasn't as if Nieni didn't see him, it was more like she was ignoring him. She stared at the next drop that had pushed through the crack in the ceiling.
Croix lunged at Nieni, but she dodged back swiftly. Croix slammed into the wall. It seemed so hard to pull himself away from the wall. It felt so nice to lean up against it and rest... His body moved towards Nieni again. He lunged at her again, but she dodged and leapt over the bed. It took him a while to extricate himself from the evil white sheets.
"Nieni~ii... Ple~ase..." he whined, his voice soft and sweet.
She stretched her body, her arms twisted above her. Her arms morphed into huge violet wings. Her teeth elongated into fangs and her fingers grew into claws. Her eyes narrowed dangerously. A sleek blue suit appeared over her body, tight against her skin. She let out a shriek, and Croix felt his body backing away. Fear seeped into his mind, and he felt like he had control of his body for once.
"W-Who are you?" he whispered, his voice once again his own.
The air around them seemed to be crackling with electrical energy. Croix knew for sure that he was afraid. She walked towards him on clawed feet, the feathered wings on her arms fluttering in the electric air. She extended a hand to him, but he didn't take it. She was powerful, like a goddess, and all he could do was cower in front of her presence.
"I am Nieni." she said. "But you can call me Merci." (A/N: She pronounces it so strangely, it sounds nothing as it is spelled)
"Wh-What are you?" Croix whimpered.
"What do you think I am?" Merci smirked. "I'm quite sure I'm a harpy."
//So strange... But it's okay...//
"Well, this is my home..." Garreth said, waving his arms to indicate.
Seks looked around the small house. It was comfortable and cozy, still Seks felt uncomfortable, and fidgeted. "It's nice..." he said nervously. Truthfully, he couldn't stand being in any house except Croix's. He immediately located all the exits.
"Yeah um..." Garreth looked to the kitchen wondering what to do. "You'll probably have to stick with me. You'll die so fast alone..."
"I can take care of myself." Seks said curtly.
Garreth laughed, paused, then laughed again. "Ha, no."
"Yes." Seks insisted, feeling his skin tingling angrily.
"Well, you might..." Garreth said nervously.
//Why do I even care if he dies or not?! I'm... Just a nice person, that's all...//
He went to the kitchen and got two sodas, handing one to Seks. "Sit down while I explain the game. You'll want to know this stuff."
Seks sat down on the floor stiffly, and Garreth looked at him oddly, but said nothing. He leaned over the back of a chair, taking a sip of his soda before beginning to explain. "Earlier in the seventy-sixth century, a game was created. God Legacy. It was thought to be the technological marvel of its time because people could go inside of it (reminds me of... uh oh).
There were three fates for people that went inside. First of all, finish the game and get the reward, second of all, live here for the rest of your life, or third... Die. The game follows many of the real world rules, such as having to eat and sleep and work. If you're hungry, you go get something to eat, if you're bored, you go to the movies, if you're sick, you go to the hospital. Many similarities to the real world, though I have never been there.
See, my mother was part of the game, and my father was from the real world. He chose to live here and married my mother. My father worked as a monster hunter, and he died on the job. My mom died of a broken heart I suppose. I was born from them though, and I have lived here all my life.
There are three ways of getting money. The first is to work, the second is to steal, and the third is to fight monsters. The monsters are a big difference from the real world, but I suppose this wouldn't be much of a role playing game without the monsters. Usually monsters don't enter cities or towns, so you have to leave to fight them.
The difference between a game and this, is that you can't run away once a monster confronts you. If you do, you usually are caught and killed. You have to fight if you run into a monster. Of course, a normal human can't kill a monster just like that, so you start off with weapons and shields and stuff, as well as weak monsters to fight. The better you get, as well as the better weapons and shields, the harder the monsters are to defeat.
Another thing is shelter, like this house we're in right now. If you don't have a house, you carry all the items you find or buy by yourself. They don't weigh anything when you carry them, and you can access them anytime you want. The bad thing, is you have a limit on how many things you can carry with you like this. Therefore, you can drop items or use them to make room for more.
If you have a house however, you can bring items back to your house and store them there instead of using or dropping them." Garreth paused and took another sip of his soda before continuing.
"I spoke before about earning money by jobs or monster hunting... Well, I'm the third one. I steal things, like you saw befo... Nevermind. My parents left me the house though when they died, so it's mine. I keep myself alive by the money I steal. I would like to work honestly, but I can't stand the work they give me. I'd kill monsters like my dad used to, but I'm not very strong... I really have no other choice.
You don't age in this game unless you choose to, but you can only age up. If you want to become younger, you can't, unless you complete the game and then come back inside the game. People have been playing this game for over fifty years and more, and their bodies in the real world have long died, but are preserved by their `spirit' that is within the game right now. Strange, isn't it?
But really, no one has ever completed this game. They all die or give up because the game is so hard to beat. This game is really long, and I don't even know if there is a way to complete it. I've just decided to live my life in here, age when I feel, and die when I want to. I'm not going to go out risking my life right now to defeat this game. I don't need the reward money. I don't want it. I have no use for it...
I don't even know if I'm real in the `Real World'. Let's see, anything else I can tell you...? Well, I can't think of anything else to tell you, so do you have any questions?"
Seks set down his soda, which he hadn't even opened. He thought a moment, tasting the words he would say before he spoke. He leaned forward, and then leaned back, cocking his head to the side. He finally brought his gaze to Garreth and spoke. "Are you afraid to die?"
//I hate them... but it's okay...//
Croix blinked sleepily. Nieni was leaning over him and laughing. Croix stifled a shriek and shoved Nieni off of him. Nieni landed with a thump beside the bed and rubbed the back of her head. "Oww! Meanie!"
She grabbed the covers and flung them across the room. Croix looked at her a moment, and she stuck her tongue out at him and stomped away. Croix looked around, and did a double take. The door was open to their room! He slowly got up from the bed and walked towards the door. Nieni stared at him silently. He walked out the door cautiously, looking around him. Nieni crawled across the floor after him.
Croix found that after a few steps through darkness, he emerged in a huge and busy city. He gaped a moment before whirling around. Nieni sat on the ground behind him in front of a huge building that said [Destiny Apartments]. Croix felt a silly smile come over his face and he closed his eyes, shaking his head a few times.
//This is not happening, I want to be home again when I open my eyes...//
When he opened his eyes, Nieni was standing right in front of him, staring right at him. "You are really weird, did you know that? You keep falling asleep on me."
Croix didn't say anything. He didn't feel that he could.
//Afraid...? Of death? ...//
Garreth sighed and dropped the empty soda can into the trash can. He didn't turn to face Seks. He felt those burning golden eyes on him, and he didn't feel comfortable. "I'm going out tonight."
"... Where?" Seks asked softly.
"On a job." Garreth said, coughing as he finished his sentence.
"Where?" Seks repeated.
"I don't know. I need some money."
"You're... Going to steal?" Seks asked. Garreth didn't answer. He moved into the other room and pulled a black t-shirt from a drawer. "Why don't you get a job? Wouldn't it be easier?"
"No." Garreth said harshly, slamming the door between him and Seks shut.
//I don't need anyone telling me what to do... I'm fine. No one has to worry and no one has to care...//
Seks stared at the closed door with narrowed eyes. He stood silently and left the still unopened soda sitting sadly on the table where he had placed it before. He then left the house, just as silently. He looked around the city a bit before walking down the street and away from Garreth's house.
Garreth opened the door and finished combing his hair back as much as it would obey. He looked around swiftly and noticed that Seks was gone. He cursed softly and raced out the door. He searched for Seks. He figured it shouldn't be that hard because Seks was so tall, but Seks seemed to be very good at hiding when he wanted to.
Garreth casually strolled down the streets, saying hello to a few of the game characters that knew him. He didn't want to ask any of them if they had seen Seks. He wasn't even sure what he'd ask if he did. He sighed and watched the sky. He knew that if he didn't find Seks soon... There'd be a big surprise for that hybrid soon enough.
Garreth looked at the ground, and blinked in surprise as a drop of water fell on to it. A moment later, more drops were falling from the sky. He cursed his luck and hurried through the streets. More and more of the game characters were disappearing into stores and houses. Garreth hurried faster, looking every which way for Seks.
Seks turned a corner, his ears flat against his head. He didn't have the energy to raise their sopping weight. His tail was curled around his left leg, protesting the rain with angry whip like flicks. His wings beat uncomfortably in the rain, most of the rain dripped off his dragon wings, but it still felt so very uncomfortable. His long hair felt really cold and wet against his body and he shivered.
He felt a hand on his back and he whirled around, fangs bared and claws extended. Garreth froze where he was, and Seks relaxed. "Oh, it's you. Why are you here?"
"You can't just go running off like that!" Garreth said with a slight tremor in his voice. That had been one of the scariest things he had ever seen.
"I'm sorry." Seks said, his tail tightening tensely around his leg.
"It's... Okay." Garreth said, catching his breath. "We're going to get sick if we just stay out in the rain. Come with me!" Garreth grabbed Seks' hand and dragged him into a nearby deli. "We'll wait out the storm here."
"Okay." Seks said agreeably.
There was an uncomfortable silence, and Garreth motioned to some chairs. "Let's sit down."
"Okay." Seks said again, and sat on the floor.
Garreth blinked. "Um... On the chair?"
"Oh... I don't think I'm supposed to sit on chairs..." Seks said softly.
"W-What?"
"Master is supposed to sit on chairs. I sit on the floor by his feet... But you aren't Master... So..."
"... Sit on the damn chair." Garreth said impatiently. "I'm not looking down at you every time I speak."
"Yes..." Seks hissed, and Garreth felt chills run through his body again. Seks stood and sat on the chair uncomfortably.
Garreth said nothing for a while, but the silence was getting to him. He shifted into a more comfortable position so he could study Seks without seeming like he was. The hybrid was so tall and big... So powerful and scary. He had heard about the real world from others before. He had heard about the Hybrid breed and some rumors.
Not all the rumors were pleasant of course, and he could see why. The aura that this hybrid purely radiated was frightening beyond words. Still, this hybrid hadn't attempted to molest him at all, nor rip him to pieces like a wild animal as he had been told. Perhaps those people had just been joking and trying to scare him.
But those eyes. Those golden eyes seemed to scan his soul everytime they fell on him, and it scared him as much as it intrigued him. He wanted to know more about these hybrids. This one seemed completely clueless. Almost like a little kid. He didn't have a name, and didn't speak of his master, or home...
What was it about this hybrid that made him feel so connected? He felt for once in his life like he could do something. It was so strange, so... addicting. It wasn't so bad that the hybrid was easy on the eyes. Too bad he was a male. If he had been female, things would have been much different. Still...
Garreth chided himself. Why on earth was he even thinking those things?! By no means would he attempt to get inside that... hybrid's pants... Oh, bad thoughts. Garreth banged his head on the table, trying to convince himself that he was not gay. Seks watched with slight amusement and a lot of confusion.
"Something wrong?" Seks asked finally.
//Why, god, why...? Why does he have such an incredibly sexy voice?! I AM NOT GAY!!!//
"... nothing..." Garreth mumbled into the table.
"... Okay... If you're sure." Seks said. He turned to look out the window at the rain. "I didn't think it'd rain here."
Garreth looked up and out at the rain. "Yeah, it does. Snows too." He looked at Seks, then immediately away.
//Wet... Ragged... Clothing... Sticking... To... Wonderful... Body... Oh god...//
Seks remained oblivious as he stared out at the rain. He watched it for a while, before looking at Garreth. Garreth was staring at the table with a blush on his face. Seks looked at him quizzically, slightly concerned.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine!" Garreth said in a squeaky voice. He stood up quickly, knocking his chair over. "I have to be going now. Go back to my house and find some dry clothes to change into, okay?" Garreth ran out of the store and into the rain.
Seks watched the figure disappear into the rain before he too stood up and left the deli. He didn't go back to Garreth's house though. He followed Garreth instead. It was hard to follow Garreth. He moved much faster than Seks expected. He seemed to be able to dodge even the rain as he moved with a purpose around the streets. Seks felt his body changing into a predator form. Chasing his prey stealthily... No, he couldn't think like that.
He forced himself to follow Garreth as best he could. Garreth seemed to know exactly where he was going. He paused in front of a large house, and studied the tall black iron gate a moment before pulling something from his pocket. Seks watched in wonder as Garreth soared over the huge gate and landed with a soft splash on the other side. Then Garreth was off again, running away.
Seks spread his wings and flew over the fence. It seemed impossibly high, and Seks had trouble fighting the rain to clear it. He landed on the other side and went after Garreth, wondering where they were. Garreth kept going at his incredibly fast pace. Seks barely managed to keep up. The rain was coming down very hard now, making it almost impossible to see in front of yourself.
Garreth finally slowed to a stop in front of yet another gate. This one was slightly open though, and he slipped inside. Seks watched as Garreth made his way up a long winding driveway. Seks lost track of him though, because he was staring at the immensity of the house that was before him. It seemed to stretch up to the sky, with towers like a castle and fountains and gardens around it.
Seks searched for Garreth a while before his eyes spotted someone streaking across the huge yard. It was a girl, and she was wearing a beautiful gown of red and gold. Three men were chasing her, dressed in uniforms. They were calling a name, but she refused to listen. Then she tripped and fell in the mud. She cursed and kicked off her lovely shoes, holding her dress up as she ran barefoot across the grass.
She spotted Seks and darted away from him. One of the men called to Seks to catch her. He spread his wings and leapt into the air. He flew over the girl a moment before swooping down and grabbing her. The men shouted words he couldn't understand and he saw them draw guns on him. Seks didn't have experience with guns, but he was pretty sure that they weren't good things.
The girl looked at him with terrified eyes before she fainted. Seks flew as fast as he could straight into the air, hearing gunshots echo behind him. Finally when he could hear the sounds no more, he headed across the skies to where he was sure Garreth's house was. He flew down through the angry clouds, and landed in Garreth's small yard. The girl still hadn't awoke, so he went inside Garreth's house and closed the door behind him.
Garreth was sitting on the couch when he entered. He didn't say anything, nor did he look up. He didn't want to admit how worried he had been... He didn't want to say anything he would never be able to take back. He didn't want to reveal anything. He heard Seks moving around and gathering towels after he found them. When he finally looked up, he gasped and looked away quickly.
Seks was naked except for a towel around his shoulders. He was leaning over a girl that was on the ground, giving Garreth quite the nice view of his back, and what was below. He stood in curiosity, trying his best not to look at the naked hybrid. When he saw the girl, he was sure his heart could take no more surprises.
"Who is this?!" he asked as soon as he could speak.
"I don't know." Seks said truthfully, finishing drying off the girl as best he could without removing her clothes. "Some men were chasing her and I rescued her."
"W... Where did you find her?"
Seks thought a moment. "A big house." he said finally.
"What big house?!" Garreth said exasperatedly.
"The one you were at." Seks said innocently and straightened, turning to Garreth.
Garreth covered his eyes. "Please get some clothes on, and then explain to me why you were following me?!"
"I was curious." Seks said, looking around a moment. "And about the clothes... You don't have any big enough for me."
"... Shit..." Garreth looked around, spotting a blanket. He ripped it off the couch and handed it to Seks. "Wear that."
"... How?"
"..." Garreth hastily wrapped it around Seks' waist and tucked one end into itself so it would stay. "There."
"Oh, how neat." Seks said, examining his new `clothes'.
"Do you know who this is?!"
"I already told you, I don't."
"... Well neither do I, but if she lived there..."
"Maybe she is a thief too? She was being chased by some people in weird uniforms."
"... Maybe..." Garreth said, not believing that though. "We'll just have to wait for her to wake up."
"I guess so!" Seks said cheerfully.
//So we're in a game... But why are we in a game? How can we be in a game when just moments ago I was in my house?! Five hundred people... I'm in a game... But why?! How?!//
Croix sat in the hotel room, staring at the ugly painting that hung on the wall while he thought. Nieni was staring out the window at the rain, twirling a strand of hair around her finger while she thought silently as well. She had been uncharacteristically quiet for the longest time. Croix paid no mind to her though. He was busy wondering why he was in a game.
"You know..." Nieni started, but then stopped.
Croix didn't say anything. He continued to stare at the ugly painting. It sort of reminded him of vomit. He finally sighed and let himself fall back on the bed. His body ached from the torture Yumy had put him through, but it felt like an old ache. As if it hadn't really happened. That maybe he had just imagined it. Just like Nieni turning into a harpy. Harpies weren't real, so he had just imagined it.
He was imagining so many things lately, and really... That wasn't like him at all. He was a realistic kind of person. He didn't just `imagine' things all the time. That was more of his hybrid's job. He didn't want to become his hybrid. He rolled over and tried to smother himself in the pillow. Right. He didn't even want to think right now. He closed his eyes and tried his best to fall asleep.
Nieni stared at Croix's motionless body. She sighed softly and crossed her arms over her chest. Her body felt tired as well. She leaned her head against the large window that looked over the city. She let her eyes drift shut and she dreamed for a bit. When her dreams started to become real, she forced herself to wake. She smiled softly at Croix's sleeping form.
//You deserve to sleep for now. Get your rest now while you can Croix. You truly deserve it. I wish... I just wish something good would happen to you. Maybe through all this horror, you'll find the light... I don't know what's going to happen, but soon enough dreams will no longer be refreshing for anyone anymore...//
