Two tails swayed back and forth slowly behind two bodies, one of a canine, the other a feline. Their hands were clasped together as they leaned over a railing, looking out across the frigid ocean water. The pair was out for a stroll in the middle of winter, and decided it to be a good place to relax.
“The bright, white snow...the glistening surroundings...winter is truly the most wonderful time of year, isn’t it?” The kitten asked.
The pup looked mostly pensive. He had a soft smile on his face, but it was as if something else was on his mind. “It is...I always long for this time of year...but sometimes, it feels like the winter is gone just as soon as it comes...”
“You know that’s not true, Josh...you just enjoy the season a lot. And times flies when you’re enjoying yourself.”
“Yeah...” He looked down to her and thought of the first time he ever laid eyes on her, and realized just how true her statement was. “Mary...you’re right. I’ve enjoyed every moment I’ve spent with you...and the time has gone by fast. Just this spring, I met you...”
Mary leaned over and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “And as odd as it was when I met you...I’m glad I did. Every moment has become a memory...”
Josh blushed and glanced away to hide it. “Yeah...I wonder what it’ll be like...when it’s been a whole year. We’ve already both changed a lot...”
Mary teased under his neck with her tail, hoping to catch his glance again. “It will be interesting...but...we’re not too different from how we were on that day...”
Josh glanced over to her, and looked down into her eyes. A few moments later he leaned into her a bit, and they shared a soft, loving kiss. The sensation lifted their spirits even further as the snow fell around them.
“I agree...it won’t be different. Not different at all,” he assured her. He then gave her a hug and nuzzled her as she rested her head on his shoulder.
After managing to get himself out of bed he trudged on to the kitchen and grabbed some toaster pastries, and ate them raw as usual. Then he walked over to this very book, and opened it for what might have been the last time. About this time, he realized that he was still writing of himself in the third person, and feeling silly, he attempted to make a transition to the reality of it all.
In reality, it hadn’t been just a year. It’s been five now. Working on six.
Things are different, but I’m still happy with it all. Quite happy with it.
Even now as I write I can feel my hands wearing thin of patience for an ending, and a happy one at that. And in reality, that’s what happened, or at least, is happening.
On that note...I close this book, as I await the time that I will finally see the one that I would call “my kitten”. Though I must say that I was quite satisfied with the dream...and just how long it seemed to last.
Still.
Seeing her will be even better.

But then...he woke up. Not abruptly or anything. He just woke up. A slight stir filled his head as he looked around his room, and the green walls that encased him. The paint looked just a bit more dull every day that he saw it. His recently cut hair still gave him the troubles of bed head, which he tried to remedy, but failed at. He looked down, having apparently fallen asleep in a tank top and boxers. He’d typically forgotten anyway. After managing to get himself out of bed he trudged on to the kitchen and grabbed some toaster pastries, and ate them raw as usual.
