Chapter 9

I pushed myself up, grabbed my katana and made for the hole in the tree. I got out just in time to see her tearing away into the brush, her long lavender hair streaming out behind her. The swirling skirt of her silver dress quickly disappeared into a background of pure white.
I whistled for Thanatos, hoping I could track her down soon. There was no way I was going to let the Fire Gem get away from me, no matter what happened to the Princess. I still had too much anger coursing through my blood to care.

Thanatos came galloping out of the cover of the trees at top speed, coming to a stop in front of me and spraying me with snow. Snarling, I hoisted myself onto his back without so much as a word. A sharp kick had him trotting down the same path the Princess had taken. With any luck, she hadn’t been able to get far.

“Damn that girl,” I snarled under my breath. “Damn…”

After a while it started to snow again. I urged Thanatos onwards, cursing the lack of visibility. Soon, the snow was coming down so hard that further travel on horseback was made completely impossible. I could barely see Thanatos’s ears, much less anything in front of us.

I reined him to a stop, dismounted quickly and landed in a knee-deep snowbank, swearing loudly and reeling from the sudden cold. Thanatos disappeared into the snow at top speed. Recovering from the shock of the cold, still swearing, I ploughed on through the drifts.

Soon, I could see footprints on top of the snow. The harsh wind and the blinding snow had let up as quickly as they had begun. (Just my luck, the damn horse runs off and THEN the f*cking weather lets up!) The footprints were red. Wherever she was, she was bleeding badly. Had she left her shoes back in the old tree? I thought hard… I knew she had been wearing boots when I found her, but since then she had changed. I went through all my memories of the past few days and finally came to a conclusion.

No, she hadn’t been wearing shoes… They were useless with all that happened to them…

Yeah, I know… Real f*cking genius, right?

That meant she had been running barefoot for some time now… I could just follow the blood. She there was no way she could have gotten far. Now I had to get the Fire Gem and figure out some way to save her too. If something happened to her, there was no way I could ever hope to bring Lily back.

I continued to push through the snowbanks, following the trail of blood. In some areas, there were no prints, but they would always resume within sight of the last set. I wondered if she had inherited her mother’s shapeshifting abilities. Judging from the piles of feathers that appeared to have been burned in lavender flame and the lingering scent of roses, she had indeed.

I heard a fairly unusual noise from far out in the brush to my right. Slowly, my hand reaching for my katana, I turned around to face whatever had made the noise. Snowy tree branches made it impossible to see clearly. Pushing the branches aside with the blade, I let my katana lead me, not knowing what I would find. Certainly I was not expecting what I did find. I looked down and followed one last bloody trail to the most shocking sight I had ever seen in my life.
