*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Chapter 1*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

A young woman that appeared to be no older than 18 wandered down a dark wooded trail. She carried no weapons of any type. She wore a long purple-ish pink dress, with a design on the top, perhaps some family crest of some sort. A deerskin sash was wrapped around her slender waist, and another long shawl which went down to about her ankles, also made out of deer skin. Her violet eyes showed clearly that they had seen too much in one lifetime, and her long, beautiful auburn-red hair fell around her shoulders and down past her waist. She was truly a beautiful sight to behold, but when one became a Vampire, one's beauty was enhanced greatly.
She had been moving non-stop these last few weeks. Hunters had been after her, trying to kill her only so they could mount her head on their wall, or to use her to fetch a nice price if they left her head attached to the body. But the only way to kill her was to REALLY chop her head off. That, or risk losing their own.
'I wish I could stand my own ground, but all four of those hunters are too much for me. They have made it now, so I've had to run into the woods. And now I'm not even going to be able to handle no more than two of them. I haven't drunk any blood in these last 5 days, and my immortal strength is drained from having to run, to flee away from them.' Irisa told herself in her thoughts. She licked her lips. The blood thirst was bad, and she would have to feed off a rat or something soon. Even the blood of an animal would do, but not for long to sedate her hunger.

Among the shadows of the dark wood, followed a tall figure. When the moonlight caught him, one could see pale hair that shimmered and his woodland garb. His booted feet were silent on the mossy earth, and his cloak brushed as silently against the brush. His hand closed hard around a bow that he carried, and a quiver of arrows hung across his back. He moved cunningly and quick, watching the young woman he'd been following through the darkness.

Irisa slowed in her walk, as she slowly moved up hill towards Northern Mirkwood. She could only pray she would make it to the top before sunrise came, or she ran into any of the hunters. Ones she did not wish to run into. …Nor any Elves, for that matter. That was the last thing she wished to do: hurt one of the kind she favored above all others in the world, and the ones whom had watched over her for 7 years of her mortal childhood. King Thranduil was a friend to only a few of the Vampire race, and Irisa was one of those. But she had only been fully accepted due to the fact that, in her years as a human, she held the blood of an Elf in her. Her father, whomever it was, had been half human and Elf, and slept with her whore of a mother. Out of that union came her. However at the age of 5, she had run off to Callabrass, home of the Korman'shi - the Blood-drinkers- and to some mortals who did not fear King Horatio's ruling. She had been the innocent soul the Vampire king had spent 1000 years looking for. He had left her with the Elves only to remain un-tainted, and for 350 years, she had remained just that. Yet, now her soul was hurting, longing to be with another… Someone to be close to, or talk to, but not be locked in the darkness no more.

Unbeknownst to the figure that he tracked, the Elf darted from tree to tree in the night. He kept his dark eyes fixed on her as she moved down the well-beaten path that flowed like a dark golden line in the moonlight. They moved up a hill and he noticed her pace slowing. They were very near his people, and he wondered if perhaps she was looking for one of them. He kept his bow ready, should he need it, and his ears twitched back and forth to listen for alien sounds in the forest.

Irisa, due to her lack of blood within her system, could sense nothing from Legolas. It showed in the tired violet eyes, and in her sluggish movements as well. However, she did not like it when she felt the sharp pain of an arrow sink into her shoulder, making her drop to her knees in pain. 'No! They cannot have found me!' She thought in a panic and looked to see in the distance, the four hunters. The ones that wished to kill her. She cried out as another arrow struck her in her leg, and fell onto her stomach, and realized any attempts on escape were hopeless. 'Why did it have to come to this?' She thought as a single blood tear fell down her face.

Catching sense of something, he wheeled around. But it was too late! Already, they had let loose arrows on the unprotected lady, and she had fallen on the path. Snapping into action, he laced an arrow to his bow and let it fly with night blinded eyes towards her assailants. He whispered an enchantment under his breath so that it would find its target, and let fly another. He moved quickly towards the path, for he somehow felt he must protect the fallen...

Irisa heard the sound of two bodies falling off of their horses, and gritted her teeth as she gathered her strength to remove the arrow from her shoulder. She whimpered as it came out. She looked at the wound and cursed. It wasn't healing, she needed blood. Taking her deer skin shawl, she pressed it to the wound to attempt to slow the bleeding. Wishing she could still run away, she could not risk pulling the arrow in her leg out. It would only make her lose more blood.

He gave up his mask of darkness, knowing he was needed. He'd heard the bodies fall, thudding into the forest floor, and worried no more about them. He moved cautiously towards the creature sitting on the pathway. In the moonlight, he could see the shimmer of spilt blood. His nostrils quivered at the smell.

He slowly walked up beside her, and knelt a little ways from her. "Are you all right, lady?" He said softly, and gently. There was deep concern in his dark eyes.

Irisa slowly lifted her head up to see Legolas. "No, please do not come closer to me, I do not wish to hurt you." She said, she raised her right hand and gripped something to help her stand and bit her lower lip to hold back the painful cry, that wished to rip through her throat. Never had she felt such pain, but never had she gone so long without fresh blood. She looked at the arrow in her leg, and sighed, knowing now it did not matter what happened to her, the gods had seen it fit she would become dead as well. Using her other hand, and ignoring the pain she pulled the other arrow from her leg.

He watched her with concern, and did not need to see her fangs to know of what sort she was. He watched helplessly, sitting back on his haunches. Her blood stained the golden dirt of the pathway that led up the hill, and he could see that she had lost a lot of it. He stood, and, without a word, disappeared into the darkness.

A few moments later, as though he had not been gone, he came back carrying the dead carcass of a rabbit. It was a rather large one. He held it up for her to see it, then set it gently on the ground. He backed away from it slowly, to show her that he meant her no harm and that it was an offering to her. "From my forest..." he said softly.

Irisa looked at it and laughed softly. "A vampire cannot drink the blood of the dead, it will only worsen me more, but I thank you for your kindness." She said. Noticing movement in the bushes, she arched an auburn brow. Gathering any bit of strength she had left in her, she moved over to them to find the leader of the hunters still alive. She snickered. "Who would have thought you would die by my fangs, you filth." She said, and dropped to her knees beside the Hunter, and roughly tore into the flesh and began to slowly drink whatever was left of the man's life.

Legolas turned away, a painful and disgusted look on his face. He could not bear to watch.

When it was over with, Irisa felt the wounds heal, and licked her lips for the little bit of blood left, and stood looking down at the one that had murdered the vampire king. "I thank you again for your help, but I will not hurt you. Elves are of the only race which I can stand, I was once half with the little bit of blood I had in me as a mortal, but no more." She said, moving past Legolas, and back on her way.

He watched her, blinking slowly. He did not understand. Rising, he called a bit after her. "Where does your journey take you? And might I be of some service? Beyond this hill is the realm of my people....."

"I know, I seek King Thranduil. He knows the location of where to find the spell caster Malik. He is the only being in this world, that can get rid of the vampire soul within me, and perhaps make me normal once again, but I do not know whether I will need help."

Legolas nodded slowly at her words. "I can accompany you to the Elven palace there, if you should wish... I know the way well." he looked back behind them, back down the pathway leading through the forest. "I know not if more hunters follow you. It be best that you were not alone."

"Why worry for a vampire?" She asked rather curious, as she look over to him, her violet eyes, even though she had fed, showed the loneliness, pain, and sorrow she had to put up with.

When her eyes caught his, he felt a deep sympathy for her. She seemed so alone, and running, in this world. He shifted his weight, and thought a moment before speaking. "You are a woman, and are all alone in the wood where you are hunted. Vampire or no, it would be only a terribly cold heart that could leave you out here like this." His ears twitched a little.

A sad smile fell on her face. "Not many have ever said such a decent thing, such as that to be in 350 years, perhaps this night will not be so bad after all." She stated, and moved back on her way towards her destination; unknown to her was that Legolas was King Thranduil's son.

They slowly made their way up the hill, Legolas keeping his senses open and alert should they be attacked again. But the forest was silent but for the sounds of the animals who spend the night awake. He carried the rabbit that he had slain, and walked with a smile, for he was glad he was going home. They neared the top, and the Elven "city" spread before them, glowing faintly in the night as though it were hung with stars on earth. Irisa looked around at the beauty, and felt some bit of her tenseness fade away, and looked up towards the balcony to notice a familiar figure and smiled up at King Thranduil. She moved inside with Legolas, and was a bit puzzled as to why they were pampering him, taking all his things, and placing them someplace for him.

He let the servants and the palace attendants take his things. One took the rabbit and another brought him a long cloak of velvet. An attendant came up and whispered in his ear, but he shook his head. "Firstly, we must see the king." He told him, and he moved away bowing. The huge doors of the throne room flew open and they beheld a room hung with silver and gold trimming, and flowing Elven sculptures. The king had made his way down from the balcony, and when he entered, all in the room bowed, save Legolas. The King went up to them smiling.

Irisa was a bit in shock as Legolas' father embraced her in a warm hug. An auburn lock came down into her left eye. "Why do I feel a little left out of the loop?" Irisa asked, the puzzled look showing on her face even plainer now, as she looked from Legolas and his father, and noticed they looked the same… 'If this is a child of Thranduil's, why is it every time I visited in the past I never saw him?' She asked herself in her mind.

Legolas nodded to his father, who had not yet acknowledged him. He was somewhat puzzled himself, how his father should act as though he already knew this strange young woman at his side. He watched, his dark eyes betraying nothing of the inward questions flying through his mind.

Irisa cocked her head to the side a little; it was cute the way her innocent violet eyes showed the confusion as the king laughed. "Irisa, you never change much with that confused face. This is my son Legolas." He said, placing a hand on his sons shoulder, and than looked back to her.

"I sense you have finally come to ask where he is."

She nodded. "You know me all to well, Thranduil. Yes, I have made my mind up, and will seek out Malik, but I have a favor to ask of ye." She said.

"And what might that be?" He asked.

She looked up to meet his eyes. "If I survive the trails my soul must endure, may I remain here among your people? We all knew I belong not to the human world nor the vampires. I don't wish to go back to two worlds where I felt rejected." She replied almost afraid to admit her worst fear. Her biggest was that of being alone.

A frown formed on the king's face, and he moved back over to the young vampire and lifted her chin to look her directly in her eyes. That bright spark of life no longer lingered in her eyes; it was gone, but the pure soul of an innocent lingered, and in much pain, and fear of being left in the darkness. He smiled, "Of course, but I know you and how stubborn you are. My son shall accompany you tomorrow night, to Malik, and will remain with you there until you have done what must be done. But Irisa, if you fail to pass the tests you will die...You do realize this?"
She nodded, "Yes, or else I wouldn't have spent four years thinking it over, and I will risk it." She stated.

Legolas bowed deeply as his father committed him to her service. It bothered him little, for he would not have that a kin would be left alone to face what trials and tribulations he felt were coming to her. At this, he righted himself and spoke softly but with determination. "I have seen her strength. She does not look as one who possesses much, but her heart is strong and true to her cause..." Giving her a quick glance, he continued, "I think that she shall not fail."

"Everyone has a weakness Legolas, and mine is quite easy to guess. Being alone, locked up in a cage, hated by the world, and all those around you."

His nod was solemn, and he lowered his dark eyes. "I shall be hoping that you will be alone no longer. And never again."

His father nodded too, with a thoughtful expression on his fair face. "My dear child, " he said gently to her, "go now with Legolas and you will be shown a room that will be yours while you stay here. A bath will be drawn, if you wish it, and some clothes that are not soiled with travel..." he trailed off, and did not mention the bloodstains, nor the holes left in the sleeve and the gown by the arrows. Legolas bowed one last time to his father.

"Thank you for everything my friend." She said moving over to the elder elf and embraced him in a hug, but once it was over with, they were shown out of the throne room. Attendants rushed up to them, ready to serve their every care and need.

She allowed Legolas to lead her off to the room that was always used for her, and set for her. Once she was in the room, she was thankful to find the bath all drawn, and undressed herself from the garments, and set them all in a neat pile, put placed her necklace with the greenleaf on it, on the dresser. She sighed, and laid her head on a towel as she relaxed in the bath. Tomorrow night, she would face the hardest task of all, fighting the vampire soul within her.

Having led her to her room, Legolas went to his own. It felt strange... He had not been there for many, many days. Off on quests, sent on diplomatic missions, travels that took him far and often, he was Thranduil's phantom of a son. The palace always felt strange and alien to him after spending so many nights in inns and under the broad expanse of starry sky... He dressed in his Elven sleeping garments with a sigh, and felt suddenly very weary. This night must be of a good sleep, for he would certainly be busy again on the morrow.
