~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Chapter 4 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As they neared the door, and then suddenly, together broke into a brief run that brought them out into the cool, crisp night air. Irisa let out a bit of a silent surprised yelp as Legolas dragged her outside, then she sighed in relief.

Legolas threw his head back to laugh and cried, "Foiled again!" Then he sighed and his breath slowed as he looked up at the stars twinkling above the canopy of trees.

"At last, a bit of peace! Legolas, may I borrow the dagger for a moment that you have hidden in your boot?" She asked him, ready to tear apart her dress.

He blinked at her, then reached down to his boot to remove its pouch. Tossing it gingerly to her, he cocked his head with a curious expression.

Irisa caught the blade with ease by the hilt, and smirked at the cute expression on his face. Then she went to work on 'fixing her dress' to her liking. She made a small V shape cut on the front. She did not like things clinging to her flesh, and was relived to feel the tight thing off her neck, and made a small silt that went up to her knee on the dress, giving her more room to walk. "That's better." She tossed her hair back behind her shoulder and looked to Legolas, and winked at him. "You'll come to learn I am not a fan of tight clothing." She stated. "Catch." She tossed the dagger back over to him.

He returned the dagger to his boot, smiling, and saying, "Next time, I shall remember to bring a pair of trousers smuggled in my tunic!" Of course, he was only teasing.

He wandered across the broad veranda and stopped at the marble wall that circled its low balcony. He leaned on it, his back to Irisa, and gazed off into the forest. A light mist wafted down through. The air was cool and welcoming. "Every time I return, he has a great feast for me. And every time, he knows before it is well over, that I shall be off somewhere away from it all." Turning, he smiled at her. "I wonder what he shall do when he finds there are two who behave in such a manner?"

Irisa looked over to Legolas from where she was and smirked at both of his comments. "I was intending to raid your brothers' old outfits for something to wear. I do not intend to wear a dress all day. They are dreadful things." She laughed softly. "However I think your father once he knows I am as your are, will most likely attempt to FIND ways to lock us in a party next time. However...We can always plot other means of escape." She winked.

"Ah..." He said thoughtfully to this, "Father is used to it. He finds it quite amusing, and yet, he does not understand why I should hate it so much." Looking off again into the misty darkness, he sighed. "I rather like to be away. My heart longs to see things, wonders of the world, and I am happiest of all on travels. Yet, it is good to have a home to return to once in a while." He looked sideways at Irisa. "It reminds one that they are wanted someplace and cared for. I do not know what I would do if I were completely alone in the world. I care for my family dearly."

"At least you have parents Legolas. My father, as I had stated to you, had some Elf blood within him, but I never knew him. My mother was a tavern whore, and a few months after my 5th Birthday the tavern owner felt pity for me, and took me half way towards Calabrass, dressed as a boy so men would not attempt to rape me." She sighed, leaning against the railing. "I knew only peace when I was here. I did not like it when I reached my 13th year and was taken away from here, to be prepared for the life of a Korman'shi. The King had picked me out of all the other souls in the world to endure hell, and in the worst form as a Vampire. He was kind to me, but I did not belong to the fellow race of Korman'shi. I attempted escapes, all that I could think of, but each time I attempted, I only made it worse for myself."

She looked up at the stars. "In an odd morbid way, I am happy the King Blood-drinker is dead. It gave me time to run away to here and rid myself of the Vampire soul within me. Had it not been for you, I would have been dead to those hunters, and my soul would have suffered, having to wander forever."

His nod was slow and saddened. "I hope you find the loving family here that you have never had before..."

Irisa smiled at him, "Your family has been kind to me for over 350 years, Legolas. Your father has always been the parent I never had, and I love him, and would do anything in my will to see to it he was safe." She stood up and swung herself over the rail and landed on the ground. "Care to join me for a walk?" She asked.

"I would!" He said with a somewhat devilish smile, which was rare for him. With a flying leap, he was over the marble rail. His feet touched gently to the grassy floor without so much as a thud. "Where would you like to go?"

"It doesn't matter to me, really… Lead the way if you like." She grinned, stepping aside a little and made a gesture with her hands for him to pass. "Men-Elves first." She smirked.

Legolas smiled and shook his head, but walked up to stand by her side. "Shall we go together? No one will force you down here." He indicated a path leading into the woods, which were now full of a light blue mist. Then he looked at her questioningly.

Irisa looked towards the path Legolas indicated for them to take. "Then let us be on our way." She said, tugging on his hand lightly for him to join her and let it go, as she moved ahead of him.
They walked quite a distance far from the palace. Legolas smiled as he watched her wander ahead, sometimes running here and there to look excitedly at little things. "I remember this place!" She cried every now and then. Just like a child, he thought, one that had a special place when they were younger and had suddenly rediscovered it.

Irisa wandered over to a tree, and looked up at it, and jumped up. With ease, she lifted herself up onto the heavy branch to sit and looked down at Legolas. "Care to come up with me?"

The Elf prince only smiled and shook his head, opting to lean back against the tree's trunk instead. Through his filmy rich garment, he could feel the strong, rough bark cut into his shoulders. It was comforting...Whatever may change in the world, the earth remained the same, the trees remained the same. Strength poured from the living giant and into his body. Closing his eyes, he breathed deeply. "What do you see?" he ventured up to his friend above him.

Irisa leaned back against the bark of the tree. "Let's see...I see a Legolas, the stars above us and a full moon, and what else...." She pondered, only to see an arrow zoom by her and sink into the tree. A startled Irisa fell out of the tree and onto the ground.

"Ouch..."

A wide-eyed Legolas dove to her side. "What happened?! How did you come to..." He was cut off by another arrow that sank into their tree with a dull thud. Legolas didn't need to look at it to know what it was. "Korman'shi! Vampire archers!" He cried as he quickly pulled her to her feet. "We are most unarmed and quite far from the palace... we must run!" They flew off down the path from whence they'd come.

Irisa winced a little at the dull pain in her side, but it would come to pass. "Why are they firing at us?!" Irisa asked him, as they raced through the wooded area, only to go up another trail towards the palace.

"I know not!" Came his cry. "Perhaps they are still trying to fetch you back.…" He stopped abruptly, a twinge of fear on his face. A little ways ahead of them, two cruelly smiling Korman'shi blocked their path...clothed in dark cloaks and armed to the gill. One had its arms folded 'cross its chest, hand resting on the hilt of its long, spiked sword. The other had a drawn bow with an arrow pointed directly at them.

Irisa's blue eyes went wide. She looked behind them and felt her heart pound, and looked to the two back in front of them. "What is the meaning of this, why have ye come after me when I have been gone for over a year!" She snapped at the leader.

To this, they only let out harsh laughter. "Yer wanted back in the Dark City..." One of the two in front of them smiled so that his fangs showed intimidating in the moonlight.

Legolas moved her back off the side of the path, where he placed his body between them and the lady. "Do not come any closer... it shall mean your doom..."

"Legolas, they cannot die like normal beings such as us...These however are young ones. Their pride shows well that they are under the elder age of 300 years. I am no longer a Vampire, and ye have come a long way for nothing." She stated, trying hard to remain calm, and not allow her fear to consume her. However, her senses were alert to the ones behind them as well.

"Speak all ye like, lass... It does not matter!" His grin was nauseating as he swaggered towards them.

Legolas' muscles tensed and he began gathering power and wordlessly forming his lips into words... It was almost unnoticeable at first, but little glowing orbs began to emerge from the misty forest. The vampires did not see, but Irisa, who was trained well as an Elf and with piqued senses, saw…

Irisa noticed these things, but however heard the sound of two arrows coming from behind and spun around in time to grab the two between her fingers with ease before they sank into Legolas back. She was a little in shock that she had caught them. "Why are you doing this?! The Korman'shi had signed a pack that would last forever… to NEVER toy nor mess with the others not related to their race!" She snapped, knowing well that that was what kept the Vampires in line.

One of the archers whose arrow she'd caught lowered his bow and looked impressed. But he, too, grinned saucily. "Aye.... But our king, the Kormanic ruler, is dead... Part'ly be yer fault, too... Our new leader is just that: new! And he b'lieves that our race deserves a better lot than what it got... An' ye know some'at?...." He leaned towards her and his foul stench, like old and caked blood, permeated the air around them. "I think he be right!"

Irisa was disgusted. She'd had more pride than this when she had been a fledgling Vampire, but not so high on herself. "Really...My fault? It was not my fault the guards had failed to keep their watch in the throne area, and in result the bounty hunters killed King Horatio. 'Tis not my fault." She smirked, and with a swift kick to the gut, sent the Vampire flying into his partner. "If you can...Go for the heads, if you remove it from the body they will die!" She called to Legolas.

He seemed not to hear her, and his body was as if it had frozen. By now there were nearly eight Korman'shi surrounding them, and their laughter was low and rough as course tree bark.

"What have we?" Hissed one of the newcomers. "Ah! Two pretties! We'll have fun with them, won't we lads? Before the night is through!" They laughed again.

Suddenly, Legolas' whispers grew loud. The dim orbs that had gathered 'round that spot burst into bright flames around them as though they were, each and every one, little suns. The light was so sudden, it blinded the Vampires who cried out in pain and backed off. As they tried to shield their eyes, Irisa felt a hand grab her arm. It belonged to the Elf prince. "Come! Come quickly!" They were off again down the path.

"It is only temporary... They'll be on our heels again in a moment, so we have to be swift! The city lay beyond that hill... from there we can call help! Or else, we must think of something we can do!" He cried breathlessly.

"If we cannot make it back Legolas, we will have to fight them ourselves. The only way a Blood-drinker can be killed is by sunlight, fire, or by removing the head from the body." She managed to get out as they began the rough run up the steep hill. Irisa forced herself to go faster, to not lag them down, and could hear voices outside from the direction of the Elven palace. However her ears twitched, as she sensed fast movement behind them. "They're gaining!"

Two figures dove out of the dark from off of the trail as they neared the top of the hill. Both Legolas and Irisa were thrown to the ground.

Legolas struggled with his assailant, who was attempting to force a dagger through his throat. Their muscles were nearly matched, and the dagger floated between them. Freeing his leg, the Elf managed to give the Blood-drinker a blow with his knee, knocking him off. In a flash, he had his own dagger from its pouch in his boot, and swung his arm in the dark. There was a sickening thud as the dismembered head hit the dirt.

"Irisa!" Legolas suddenly remembered her and spun around...only to have his head yanked back by the hair. Another Korman'shi… There was laughter in his ear and hot breath on his face, but he swung his dagger once again, gouging the thing in the neck. It lay there stupidly, and he took its own sword and made clean of the job. "Irisa! IRISA!" He cried urgently into the dark.

Irisa rolled out of the way quickly as a sword came crashing down in the spot where she had been, and managed to kick the sword out of the Vampire's hand. "You filthy little wench!" He hissed, and moved towards her.

Irisa jumped back up to her feet. She sent a hard, swift kick to the Vampire's face, then ran over to the sword and picked it up. "So the former Vampire Princess DOES have a back bone." Laughed the Blood-drinker she had sent to the ground. Irisa grabbed the hilt of the sword tightly in her hands and narrowed her eyes at the Vampire as he stood.

"I have a will to live now, not sit and suffer in the darkness no more!" She snapped, and with one swing, sent the Vampire's head flying.

Legolas saw her silhouette through the mists, and moved towards her quickly. Something whizzed past his head, sending him ducking, and he heard an arrow hit a tree behind him. Before he could move again, he felt another graze his shoulder. He blinked at the wound, which was not serious. Yet, it sent pangs of anger shooting through his blood. He yelled an Elvish cry and flung two daggers, one his own and one taken from his first assailant, flying at the archers. The chant let them find their marks, and they sunk into the Blood-drinkers' necks. "How do you like the sting of my fangs?" Legolas asked darkly, his eyes sparkling with fury.

Irisa jumped on Legolas, in time taking them to the ground as a large deadly weapon went past them. "We must hurry..." She grabbed Legolas by his hand and raced up the hill the rest of the way with him, and looked behind them. The Korman'shi were there again in close pursuit.

"Legolas! Duck!" Irisa ordered as the same type of weapon, a Korman'shi heavy-spear, went sailing past them. She noticed he was bleeding, but could do nothing now, and gripped the sword's hilt tighter in her grasp. She did not understand why this was happening. The only thing she could think of was that the Elders had gone mad, or the young ones were foolish to attempt to break the sacred law that had been in place for well over 5000 years.

As he ducked, Legolas shouted something up to the trees. A fierce whistling sound filled the forest. It was obviously a call for help, and he hoped that they were close enough to the Elven city for it to be heard and answered. He turned to Irisa. "I know not how long this can be kept up..."

Irisa stood. "Let us hope someone will have heard us." She said, seeing the Blood-drinkers coming. "These are all young Korman'shi warriors, but WHY they do this, I cannot begin to guess. I can only assume, the old eldest Vampires are doing something, but why would they want me? And now, of all times?" She asked herself more.

Legolas shook his head. He knew even less than she! They looked down from the hilltop into the Elven "city". There were sounds... lights moving, torches... now they saw archers running through the great trees and calling to one another. He smiled. "They've heard us! And sent alarum... They are coming now, up to assist us..."

Irisa caught an arrow between her fingers before it sank into her. "My first day as an Elf, truly has been a day I shall not forget." She said, snapping the arrow between her fingers.

Turning to give her an amused smile, Legolas felt himself thrown to the ground. Three other Korman'shi fell upon Irisa from the mists. "No more silly games from ye... Ye've killed enough of our companions as it be!" There was anger in the voice. One of them grabbed her by the hair and yanked, intending to snap her neck.

Legolas was thrown face-first into the dirt, and a hard-soled boot came down in the small of his back. There was a loud cracking sound and a jolt of pain ricocheted through his body. The Korman'shi leaned down over his shoulder and laughed into his pointed ear. "I have ye now... Pretty boy!" Rough fingers closed around his wounded shoulder. He was lifted up from the ground and the Blood-drinker brought him close to his face. The pungent odor of bloody sweat nearly made him lose consciousness... The Vampire laughed again, then slowly ran his tongue across the open wound in the Elf's shoulder. Legolas' stomach churned, and the world began to spin around him...

Irisa growled. "Like hell I'll die!" She snapped, and using her fingernails like a weapon, blinded the vampire by cutting into the eyeballs. She felt sick from doing it, but didn't care.

She got to her feet and grabbed her sword, then felt her eyes go wide in fear as she saw the one Vampire that had Legolas was about to sink his fangs into the youngest Prince's neck. 'Oh no! I won't let you!' She told herself.

Quickly, Irisa ran forward to jump on the Blood-drinker's back, taking him down with her. "LEGOLAS! The sword!" She yelled, holding the Vampire down to the ground with all the strength she had.

He stood shakily, his wounded shoulder now visibly drooping. A trickle of blood ran down his chin. Yet... his dark eyes held death. An indifferent expression passed over his face, and almost as though he were in a trance, he very slowly walked towards them. He picked up the sword and stared right into the Vampire's eyes as he sliced its head off with a mechanical swing of his last good arm.

Irisa moved to Legolas, looked at the wound and cursed. "I will clean that wound for you once we make it back to the palace safely..." She noticed the other Elven archers now running towards them while a bunch of others went after the Korman'shi. One of them came to look over at Legolas.

"I will deal with him. You cannot kill these Vampires with arrows, use your swords to remove the heads, or fire, it is the only way they can die!" She ordered, the male Elf. "Spread the word please to the others, or else these rouges will return to their Master."

The archer nodded to her and was off like a whisper through the trees after the others. Another small party of Elves surrounded the two. "We are here to escort you safely back..." One of them, a good friend of Legolas', rushed to his side and took his arm across his shoulders to help him. Legolas was thankful of his support. Another went to Lady Irisa and offered her his arm.

Irisa told them she needed no help, but ordered for them to bring her warm water, healing herbs and a few other things to Legolas room, so she may patch him up, however as she made her way back up towards the elven palace, a sense of dread setteld over her, as if telling her, this was but a taste of what was too soon happen next.
