Fan Fiction ❯ Inamorati ❯ The Same Old Dream ( Chapter 1 )
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
Kaiya clutched him close, unwilling to ever let go. She felt dizzy…this just couldn’t be happening…Not to her. Not to them. It just wasn’t fair. “Kaiya…,” Zuko said, interrupting Kaiya’s thoughts, and releasing his grip on the sobbing girl standing before him.” I must leave now.”
A 14-year-old Zuko glanced up in time to catch his Uncle Iroh glaring at him. This obviously wasn’t the time…or the place. Reluctantly, Kaiya released her death grip, then looked her best friend up and down for what would probably be the last time. She broke out in a fresh wave of tears as a broken sob escaped her lips. Zuko raised a hand to Kaiyas cheek and gently wiped away her tears with his thumb. Kaiya let her eyes wander… He had grown so tall that she now had to look up to see his slanted amber eyes. Or his eye. Fore his left eye was now covered with a large patch of gauze.
It was there to cover a burn. That’s what this was all about, the burn. ‘Well, no, not exactly,’ Kaiya thought to herself with a sigh. The burn had just been yet another horrible side effect from the whole damned event. And it was all her fault. He had gotten that protecting her, standing up for her. You see, when their friendship was exposed people called her horrible things. They didn’t understand how her and Zuko could sneak away for hours at a time just to talk. Zuko had heard people talking about Kaiya, and started standing up for her….but he had stood up to the wrong person just that one time….his father. He let his temper get the best of him, and his father struck him, hard. And now both were banished.
Zuko would travel the would with his Uncle Iroh in search of the Avatar. Kaiya….well, her and her family weren’t directly banished, although they might as well have been. Kaiya’s family had been shamed, so now the whole of them had to move. Steam started rising from a tall smoke stack on the ship. Iroh was calling to Zuko to hurry, but Kaiya couldn’t quite grasp onto what he was saying. Zuko started to walk away, leaving Kaiya to just stand there crying. Finally though, she came to her senses. Kaiya ran up to Zuko then, hesitantly, brought her lips to his cheek. Suddenly, her surroundings started to fade, to become transparent…..Kaiya was floating away from her beloved childhood friend….
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ End Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kaiya awoke with a start, a silent tear streaming down her pale cheek. Although she had had this dream every night for the past two years, she still wasn’t accustomed to the painful twinge her heart received every time after it. It had been two years since she had last seen Zuko, and she was now living in a Earth Kingdom town controlled by the Fire Nation. Somewhat groggily, Kaiya rose out of bed to receive an annoying head rush. She picked up her bed-side candle and carefully made her way to her dresser by its dim light.
A reflection stared out at her from the mirror, a reflection she hated. Her reflection. Ugly. Not nesacerrily her face itself thought Kaiya warily. No, it was the make-up plastering it that she was forced to wear everyday that was hideous. It was the white paint so carefully applied to every inch of her skin that was showing, which contrasted so deeply with the black kohl continuously surrounding her kind, deep brown slanted eyes. The shiny red paint that was applied to her lips every morning which her people considered ‘beautiful’, was in her opinion just…..unnatural, and not in a good way.
Silently, Kaiya opened a oak dresser drawer and pulled out a brush. She gently ran it through her waist length, midnight black hair. Two hours later, a tired Kaiya crept back into bead. She was asleep before her head hit the pillow.
