Chapter 1: "That's Our Signal"

Author's note: "just to let you know, this takes a while (after New Year in the story) after the whole feild trip thingy from the prologue... So yeah... Hope you liked this!!!"

Monday morning, and Nate rode down the worn sidewalk to school. Everything was fine, not much to worry about, but as he got closer, the thoughts of his crush, Chloe started to come to mind, remembering during the Prism concert feild trip, when he finally got the courage to ask Chloe to sit next to him, which made him distracted, that he almost ran into a small squirrel. He stopped right on time, and the squirrel just stood there, staring at the bigger fellow before him,
"Ah jeez... I really got to be careful..." He mumbled, as he let the squirrel pass through, and he continued on his way. The sun started to climb through the trees, which made the chilly mornings a bit warmer, which also relieved Nate's skin with warmth as the sun danced on his skin when he decided to push harder on to school, just so he could be graced with Chloe's smile. Already he felt a connection with her, but there was something about her that he still needs to know, ever since she started talking to him, he felt that there was something natural to her that he could automatically feel comfortable with her.
Now on school campus, he got off his bike, and took his helmet off, and started to lock his bike. The sun barely peeked through the trees as he started to the cafeteria doors. As he got closer, he shook his head, just to wake himself up, and when he did, his brown short bangs swayed, and he remember how much that Lisa, Chloe's friend, would always nag him to not grow it out so he wouldn't look like someone who did drugs. The thought made him laugh, then again, like Chloe replied to that statement, that they should see later on when they're all in highschool in his defense.
Almost to the door, his glasses were starting to slip, so as he pushed the door, he pushed his glasses,
“HI NATE!” Lisa, screamed out enthusiastically. He just smiled, and continued to his usual seat that Lisa assigned, for some odd reason, was right next to Chloe, not that he didn’t like the seat, it was just odd for some reason.
“Nate! What are you going to do over the three-day weekend?” Lisa asked,
“Well, I’m not really sure we need to know. Hopefully he doesn't do anything on Sunday!” Chloe jokingly said, as Nate playfully shoved her,
“No, nothing like that kind of stuff! Besides, it’s kind of a sin to do that on a Sunday!” He said, taking off his book bag and adjusting his glasses,
“Right… Anyways! Are any of you planning to see the Finch concert?” Chloe asked, stealing Nate’s glasses and putting them on,
“Well… no, considering that I have never heard of Finch,” he replied, groping for his glasses,
“Wow… I really need to burn a copy for you…” She sighed, sounding disappointed.

The rest of the day seemed so normal that Nate almost forgot that it was Friday, and thought that it was Monday. Finally the last period of the day, and the bell was about to ring. He stole a glance into the window next door, and saw that Chloe was just sitting there, waiting for the bell to ring as well. One thing he noticed was that she was coughing more than usual, but he didn’t think of it much. Right when he was going to turn away, he a saw a small note in her hand. He wasn’t sure if it was what he was thinking or not, but it did make him wonder.
3:42, and the bell rang. The whole school just sighed of relief as the students all poured out of their classrooms, waiting to go home.
“Hey Nate!” Someone called out. It took a few seconds for him to notice, but when he turned around, his heart skipped a beat when he saw Chloe. She seemed exhausted, though, then again, Mrs. Chalice is known to exhaust her advanced students, or so Chloe stated. She drew a breath, and then coughed,
“You ok?” Nate asked,
“Yeah” she replied, her jet-black hair swaying underneath her hat. Again he saw the note, probably for someone else he thought, eyeing the note,
“Hey, um, I was hoping that you would read the note,” She said finally,
“Oh, sure, but can you tell me why?” He asked,
“You’ll find out in the note,” she answered, ending the case. After that, they hugged, and departed, even though Chloe did leave, Nate still had some questions, maybe hints, to what she meant about the note.

He rode down the path to his house on his bike, still wondering about the note in his pocket.
Could it be what I think it is? Or was it just one of those notes just to say hi, with some cute joke or something? Considering the fact that Chloe does like to joke around as much as I do

The thoughts started to really annoy him that to distract himself, he decided to turn on his Walkman. But when he did, a song reminding him of her, he just turned it off. He finally got home, and inserted the password key into the garage, and went inside. He was greeted with a mew from his cat, a white Persian, named Calli, who just mewed again, and licked his face,
“It’s nice to see you too, Calli,” He said, as he walked off to his room. The house seemed really quiet, unless you count the usual sounds of a cat running around, other than that, seemed pretty quiet. He dropped his book bag onto the chair next to his bed, lied down, and started to read the note,

“Hey Nate! How’s it shaking? Anyways, I had a feeling that you would ask about what’s in the note and all, so pretty much, here’s the reason…

The thing is, ever since after the All County auditions, I guess I started to have a crush on you. I don’t know how, but just somehow, it came to me that I liked you. And so, I was kind of hoping that you would go out with me… Might be kind of strange, but yeah… Just give me an answer, either way; we’ll both still be friends!

Hopefully love, Chloe”

Nate drew a breath, and sighed in relief. Right when he calmed enough, he did a victory arm pump, and mouthed “yes!” Suddenly a thought came to him, now that he thinks about it; there are people who are annoying the crap out of both of them, so they would just go out with each other already. He wants to be in a relationship with Chloe, but the thing is, is that he doesn’t want anyone to know. Maybe he’ll just think it through for a while, tell her that he likes her, but maybe think it over for a while… Pretty much makes sense…

The rest of the day, he just stayed around, and pretty much felt elated. He finally got a girl that he liked to like him back, pretty much gives him a reason to be this giddy and happy, though then again, there’s still the thought of Chloe’s reaction to when he tells her that he likes her, but doesn’t want to be in a relationship yet. He’s kind of nervous of the fact that he might disappoint her when he tells her, but then again, there’s the fact that he’s telling her that he likes her. She’s pretty understanding, he thought as he got ready for bed, and went into a fitful sleep.
As he was asleep, there were sudden branch rustling through his window, though Nate didn’t notice, his door creaked open, and a small figure crawled through the crack, and jumped onto the window sill. The small figure opened the window, and an even smaller shadow flew through, and hopped onto the back of its bigger fellow, and they both went outside.
“See, I told you that he’d like her!” A hyper sounding voice came,
“true, but the thing is; is that he wants to keep it a secret... I really do have a feeling that he’s not going to do much to show!” A calm, serene voice whispered. Both stopped temporarily, because they heard Nate rustling, and continued,
“so you think we should continue with our spells Calli?” The voice asked,
“I’m afraid so, but not yet Almond...” Calli paused, “remember that he’s waiting for the right moment to ask her out, for now, he’s just going to confess that he likes her, and then life will continue without our interference. But when he asks her out, then we start planning... So for now, you keep watch... “
Almond thought about it, as he fiddled with his supposed wings. It took a while, but he realized what he had to do for a while,
“you mean I have to follow Nate and Chloe?! C’mon! I was planning to raid that nut tree!!!” He complained, but Calli just gave a stern stare, and he automatically recoiled.
“You will make sure that everything between them stays cool, and if there are any troubles, just try anything you can, and then I’ll try to help” Calli said finally, Almond just scowled, and then nodded,
“fine.. But you owe me..” he mumbled.
