Ch 3: The Letter
7 May 2000
It had been almost two years since Battle Mishima Beef and Sakai had heard nothing from Kumiko. If it hadn't been for the missing scarf, he would have thought the battle never occurred.
He couldn't just call her or mail her a letter. As far as he knew, she was still married to Shigeru. One wrong move, and he's toast. (Yuck.)
One of the waiters came in with an order. For some reason, Sakai felt like taking this one out himself. Who he saw nearly made him drop the meals.
Kobayashi Kumiko was sitting at the table, silent and composed. Shigeru was next to her, taking in the surroundings. Sakai set the meals down in front of them, and hid behind a fake tree.
Kumiko and Shigeru ate their meals and made small talk. Then Shigeru spotted some friends and went to talk to them.
While he wasn't looking, Kumiko quickly took out a pen and scribbled on a piece of paper. She folded it, and slipped it under a plate.
Sakai waited until they left to clear off the table. The note was addressed to him. In messy katakana it read:
Hiroyuki,
I'm sorry I couldn't speak to you but it couldn't be helped. Somehow, Shigeru found out I had feelings for another. (He doesn't know it was you, thank God.) So he's been keeping a close eye on me.
Don't worry. As soon as I have enough things stored in my car, I'm escaping and I'll make my way to Kitchen Stadium.
I'll see you soon.
I love you.
Kumiko.
