Chapter 1

Justice & The Kat

*~*~*~
Maybe this should stop…

“Roberts,” shouted the sergeant halfway across the patrol room as a young woman in uniform looked up in response, “Good work out there tonight!”

Yeah, really good…

“And don't forget your appointment with the department's shrink, scheduled first thing on Monday morning!”

Yay! Can't wait…

“Thanks, sir.” Roberts replied, somewhat bitterly.

Since when was someone complimented for killing someone else? Should I have been proud of killing someone whose face I've never seen before? Just because he was a lousy human being, doesn't mean I planned on meeting him through our department's morgue. I didn't become a police officer in order to kill people; I actually chose this profession hoping to help people. A simple childhood dream I struggled to achieve, only to find out two years and three bodies later that it was more of an ideology. I hate pulling that fucking trigger. I, Justine Roberts, will never be able to forgive myself for the lives I've taken, but I can't think about that now, I have a job to do.
My partner and his friends are planning to head out to the bars, you know, to start the weekend out “the right way.”

I wonder what Kat's up to this weekend, maybe I should call her later…

They congratulate me, pat their sweaty hands on my back, and through all this they still find the time to invite me to join them; I declined their offer as politely as I can manage. After weak protests they finally gave in and say what a shame it is that I can't go and how boring it will be without me. Suddenly I got the urge to punch someone.

As soon as I stepped out of the precinct and onto the stone steps my brain switched to automatic. Walking over into the parking lot, the drive home to my cramped, two- bedroom apartment, it was all routine…until I walked up the stairs to find a familiar figure crouched up against my door, that is.
