Chapter Eight
Nicole sat up in the bed as Darius laid beside her, asleep.
She looekd down at her hands, clenching them closed as she shivered lightly.
After a moment, she shook her head and stood up, carefully pulling her shirt back on.
She paused and looked at her shoulder for a moment.
It was almost healed.
She shook her head once again. She always knew about her ability to heal…but this only proved to make her a little more guilty of what she gained–and her mother lost.
She snapped out of reality as she heard a grunt come from Darius. Nicole glanced down at him.
He had finally let her bandage his cheek with some objection. He kept claiming it would heal in a matter of an hour or so.
“Well, in the mean time,” Nicole pushed his hands away from his cheek and studied the wound, before turning to the bandages on the night table, “This will keep it from getting infected–“
“Seriously now, Nicole. I’m fine.” But before Darius could object, she quickly turned around, and slapped the bandage onto his cheek.
He just stared at her, rubbing his cheek, before realising she not only slapped him, but put the bandage on at the same time.
“Talented.” He smirked, grinning as she let out a groan and shook her head, smotting her forehead.
She smirked lightly, before turning, and slowly walking out of the room–trying to be careful not to make any noise.
She entered the long hallway, and looked about her slowly, before continuing, barefoot, down the hall till she reached the bar.
Upon entering the bar, she walked to the staircase–but not before noticing a figure at the bar itself.
“Gonna serve me? Or pretend I don’t exist?”
“Do I have a choice?” Nicole muttered as she walked up to the bar, and slipped behind it.
She glanced at the figure for a brief moment when they spoke.
“Ah, fiesty one are we? Not afraid to talk back?”
“Nope. What do you want?”
“Just a beer, please.”
“Sure thing.” She said simply, kneeling down and opening the small fridge that was usually located beneath a bar.
Nicole stood back up, and used a knife she grabbed from the counter to pop the lid off. She then slid it to them.
“Have you ever bartended before, missy?”
By this time, Nicole had gathered it was a man. She nodded, “Yes. It was my job before I came here.”
“Do you work here?”
“No.”The figure looked up at her, reaching up and pushing off their hood to reveal a handsome man who looked to be in his thirties.
He had red eyes, and a pale complexion. This wasn’t too uncommon amongst vampires.
What was uncommon, however, was the color of his hair.
Whereas most vampires would prefer dark colors like Black or Red, this one chose the unlikely color of white.
His wispy white hair drifted about his shoulders, and two curved slightly to cup his face.
He had a rather elegant look about him.
He wore a simple collard black dress-shirt, and a cape-like cloak over his shoulders.
Everything he wore was black and gold.
The shirt was black–the collar lined with gold.
His cloak was black, the runes gold.
“What are you doing here, then…?”
His voice had the common hiss of a vampire, but it seemed slightly different…it had more emotion in it then most.
“I’m residing here for the moment.”“With Darius?”
“Sort of.” She nodded a little with a small shrug.
“Might I ask your name, Young miss?”
Nicole nodded, “Nicole Yevennes.” She leaned forwards, extending her hand to him.
He took her hand and brought it to his lips, kissing it softly, “Cerebus Dante.”
“Pleasure to meet you–“
“No no…The pleasure is all mine.” The man smiled a charming smile, before releasing her hand and grabbing the bottle and raising it to his thin lips.
He drank from it slowly, before placnig it down and licking his lips, “How long have you been here, Nicole?”
“At least 2 days…I think. I haven’t been out and about, and I don’t know whether it’s sunny or dark outside…”
“Ah, the sacrifice of living with a Vampire. Sleep when they do–wake when they do. There is no Sleep when they wake–and wake when they sleep.”
“Well…I choose to. I think he would let me sleep when he wakes–“
“Would you feel safe, letting yourself do that–though?”
Nicole fell silent, before sighing, “I don’t know.”“If you do- do that, then…you will pretty much be alone in a large mansion with sleeping vampires.”
“True…”
“You’re a vampire…?” He asked, watching her mouth intently before directing his gaze to hers.
“No…Not really…”
“I see. But you have fangs–““And a bite on my neck–but it still doesn’t mean I’m a Vampire.”
“Your sensitive to the subject. So I’m guessing something happened concerning the teeth and scars…Lost someone close?”
“My mother–excuse me, but are you profiling me?”
Cerebus smirked, “Have you ever been profiled before, M’dear?”
“No–“
“Well now, how would you know that’s what I’m doing?”Nicole shrugged, “One can only guess when another asks a lot of questions–they are either curious, or profiling them to figure out whether they are dangerous or not–but of course, it can be both.”Cerebus quirked an eyebrow, and she continued, “You could be curious–and profiling me.”
Cerebus smirked once again, “Intelligent, are we? Very good. You catch on to things quickly. Yes. I was profiling you–but only for my safety. You never know when someone is a slayer or not.”
“Slayers…We had one here earlier.”
“So I noticed.”
Nicole blinked, “What do you mean?”
“We can sense blood, us vampires. There is blood smeared on the floor upstairs. I know my nephews’ scent, and now I know yours. There’s yours–and another young woman’s there…mixed with a slight hint of my Nephew, Darius.”
“You’re their uncle?”“Yes. Their father’s Half Brother. Vince. Me and him had different mother’s–yet the same father.”
“I see…so Vince, their father, took the same path as your father’s?”
“What do you mean by that?” Cerebus asked curiously, tilting his head before bringing the bottle to his lips again.
“Well, you said you two had different mother’s…Scott and Darius, if I recall, had different mother’s as well.”
Cerebus went quiet, before nodding, “It would seem that way. But he hasn’t completely taken his father’s path. Yes. He murdered both of his wives…but he has not murdered his daughter.”
“…”
“Surprised?”R 20;Darius and Scott has a sister?”Cerebus nodded quickly, “Yes…Though I am to believe she is either dead…or joined in with the slayers.”
“How come?”“I’ve never seen my niece before.”
“Really?” Nicole asked curiously as Cerebus pushed his bottle away–finished with it.
“Yes.” He whispered quietly, “Sarah…Come to think of it, I don’t even think Vince turned her.”
“Perhaps he found he couldn’t turn his own daughter?”
“He had no trouble with his sons. But Sarah is older then both of them, so perhaps he had a stronger bond with his daughter.”
Nicole nodded a little, before speaking slowly, “Why did Darius never mention he had a sister…?”
“I’m not sure. But then again, Darius doesn’t speak of family much. He hates most of his living relatives.”“So I noticed…” Nicole muttered, and Cerebus chuckled.
“I suppose you’ve seen his dyeing hatred for his father--?”
“Yes. He told me he would kill him if it weren’t for the fact his father was of his blood–““That–and because of the fact that Vince is the one who turned him. If Darius kills his own father–and mentor, He might as well go kill himself.”
“What do you mean--?”“Vince is his life line.”
“That makes no sense though…What if his father dies of old age?”
Cerebus smirked lightly, “Me and my brother have been alive for longer then 300 years and we’re only in our 30’s at least…Do you honestly think he’s gonna die of old age anytime soon?”“No, but–“
“Hey…Sweety, it’s only a rumour. I’ve never had to kill my father. My father vanished.”
“I see…”
Silence fell, before Cerebus leaned back slightly in his bar chair.
“So, how did you two meet?”“Well, that’s a funny tale. You see, I was running for my dear life, when he pinned me against the wall in an alley and bit me.”
Cerebus laughed a little, “I see…Interesting way to meet a lady.”
“Your telling me…I thought he was going to surly kill me.”
Cerebus nodded weakly, before a cough came from the hallway.
The two turned their attention to a figure in the doorway, and a grin split onto Cerebus’ lips.
“Why, your girl can keep quite the conversation, Darius.”
Nicole chuckled lightly, and Darius smirked, shaking his head as he walked to the bar.
He sat down next to his uncle, and stretched.
He had his shirt off.
Nicole blushed lightly, turning to look at the empty bottle of beer sitting on the counter.
After a moment, she grabbed it and turned to the mirrored counter behind her where the liquor bottles sat. She placed it there, before turning to look at the men again.
“Hello Uncle.” Darius said casually after a moment, before turning to look at him, “What brings you here tonight?”
“Your Father, actually…”
“What of him?” Darius frowned slightly, and Cerebus turned to look at his obscured reflection in the mirror opposite of him, “He’s got a death wish. Putting your brother’s life in danger–“
“How so?” Darius quirked an eyebrow.
“He’s planning on killing one of the leaders of the slayers in this area tonight.”
Silence fell, and Darius turned to look down at the counter top, “You sure of this?”
“Yes.”
Silence once again.
Finally, Darius smirked, shaking his head, “About time the damn bastard tried to get himself killed instead of living on the wings of paradise.”
Cerebus sighed, “But your brother–““He’ll be fine.” Darius said simply as Nicole leaned against the counter, watching him.
“How do you know?” She asked softly, and her only response was another smirk from Darius, and a simple sentence.
“Scott has a habit of managing to get out of things like this.”
Scott sighed as he walked amongst the many faces in the waiting hall.
Vincent, his father, left to go tend to some business, leaving Scott standing in the most unpredictable situation he’s been in–as of lately.
He tried his best not to talk much. If he did, it would give away the fact he was a vampire.
Suddenly, he felt an arm drape around his shoulder’s casually from behind and a pair of lips at his ear.
The lips brushed against his ear as the figure spoke softly.
“Well, This has got to be the last place I ever thought I’d see you…”
Scott blinked, “I beg your pardon?” He responded in a whisper.
He heard them smirk.
“You’re a vampire–in a sea of Vampires. What are you doing here, Scott?”
Scott blinked, finally turning around.
He took a step back in surprise as he finds himself face to face with a shorthaired woman.
She was slightly shorter then him, but fairly attractive.
Her hair was Raven-black, and her eyes a soft shade of crimson.
She wore her bangs covering one eye. Her skin was a shade darker then most–more then likely a tan.
Her physique was adorned in a dark blue, strapless dress that hugged her elegant curves perfectly. It was slit up the side of her left leg, to reveal she had a knife attached to her leg with quick release.
Her hands were gloved in white, and a necklace hung around her neck.
She looked to only be in her early 30’s. Still young.
It took a minute for Scott to match her face with his memory. But once he did, he gasped.
“Sarah! My god–it’s been so long.”
“Indeed it has, dear brother.” The young woman smiled softly.
Scott suddenly embraced his older sister tightly.
Sarah returned his embrace, before slowly releasing him and watching him for a moment, then speaking, “Is father here, too?”
“Yes. It’s the reason I’m here. Sarah…I think dad is up to something.”
“No duh–“
“Hold on. Why are you here? I was told there was only me, and two other vampires here–“
“I’m not a vampire, Scott…” She whispered softly.
Scott stared at her, before shaking head, “What do you mean--?”
“I know your surprised, but…I got away before Dad could even grab me…He was going to kill me, Scott.”
“But you and dad--!”“Yeah…We had quite the relationship. But…Dad and mom had a good relationship too–and he killed her…”
“Yeah…So…what are you doing here?”
“I’m with my boyfriend, Lucius…I’m a slayer, Scott.”
“What?!” Scot exclaimed, releasing his sister quickly.
Sarah frowned, “Yeah…”
“How could you--?”“Do you really think I had a choice?” She snapped, crossing her arms and narrowing her gaze on him.
“Luke found me on the streets almost dead–he saved my life. I owe him everything.”
“But Sarah…”
“I would never kill you, brother…or Darius…”
Scott shook his head, and Sarah sighed, reaching forwards, “I could never do that…It’s not your fault you were turned. Father was determined to make us all vampires…”
“I know…” Scott whispered. He looked up at her, and noticed that when she moved, her hair moved slightly, revealing the edge of a black cloth. Blinking, he reached forwards and cupped her cheek lightly, and used his thumb to brush aside her bangs.
The second his thumb moved her hair slightly, she recoiled at this touch, and quickly stepped away from him, bowing her head slightly so her bangs covered that spot again.
However, Scott saw enough to know.
“Your eye–“
“I should be leaving.” Sarah said quickly, “It was nice to see you again, Scott. Give father my regards.” She said this as she started to back away, but Scott quickly grabbed her, and pulled her close to him again.
“What happened, Sarah?”“What do you mean–“
“Don’t play stupid.”
Silence fell between the two, when a cough came from behind Scott.
“Is he bothering you, Sarah?”
Sarah looked up and over Scott’s shoulder, only to frown.
“Lucius–“
“Leave her alone.” The man growled.
Scott blinked, turning slightly to see a tall man with short brown hair.
He had light blue eyes, and a fair complexion.
He was, as every other guy here, dressed in a tux.
Scott smirked, “I’m not doing anything to her.”
“That’s not how it looked from across the room.” Lucius growled.
Sarah wrenched herself free from her brother’s hold, and rubbed her wrist lightly, “He wasn’t, Luc–“
Lucius looked at her, and she fell silent.
Scott quirked an eyebrow, looking at the two. He hesitated, before waving a hand in front of Lucious’ face, “Hey, buddy, the attention is supposed to be on me. Not her.”
Lucius’ gaze was brought back to Scott, and he smirked, “Just leave her alone.”
Scott glanced at her, then slowly brought his gaze back to him, “Sorry, can’t do that.”
“Scott–“ Sarah tried to push him away, but instead, Scott just grabbed his sister, turned her around so her back was against him, and looked at Lucius, “Jealous of another man getting this close to your woman?”
Lucius growled, and Scott leaned down to whisper in her ear, “Are you going to tell me what happened? Or will I have to continue the tango with your lover?”
Sarah frowned once again, shaking her head, “Fine. I’ll tell you. But you have to let me go.”
“Fine.” He said simply, dropping his hand to his side, and taking a step back, “Tell me.”
“I was just a little girl…” Sarah started off, taking a step towards Lucius before turning to face her brother, “Me and dad had a good relationship–yes. But that one night, he got a little too out of hand with abuse..as if he was trying to make himself hate me so it would be easier to kill me…So…He slapped me across the face, but perhaps a little too…high, I guess.”
Scott quirked an eyebrow and she continued, “The impact of the blow damaged my eye…and I guess he cut it pretty bad, too, with his nails.”
Scott fell silent, before speaking slowly, “So Dad made you go blind.”
“Yes.”
He shook his head, “Every minute I’m finding myself hating him more and more. Well…I must say I’m impressed you made it thus far. A little disappointed you’re a slayer, but glad you’re okay. Darius would be glad to know.”
Sarah smiled a little, “How’s Darius doing?”
“He’s okay. Got himself a girlfriend.” Scott said with a slight smirk.
Sarah raised both eyebrows, “Oh?”
“Yeah. Shocking, I know. He’s pretty str--…He’s different. Not like every vampire…”
“He takes after dad, then.”
“Yeah.”
“Hm…” Sarah fell silent, when a large bell rang, causing all three to jump in surprise.
Scott looked over at the door, then at his sister, and nodded a little, “Well, we’ll have to discuss this later.”
He paused for a moment, then looked down at a watch on his wrist, muttering.
“It’s supper time.”
Nicole sat up in the bed as Darius laid beside her, asleep.
