Chronicle 01: A Boy Struggles
-----------------------------
Link stared in sheer disbelief at the beloved father of the forest, the parasite’s blood still
dripping from his sword.
“Navi…” He whispered to his companion, as even the leaves on the great tree seemed to become
silent and still. The small fairy circled the boy, trying to bring a little comfort to him.
“But…the virus is dead! I got it…it disappeared…” Link wiped a smudge of the creature’s ooze
from his tunic and stared at it, as if it held the answer to life itself. “What’s the point if
the Great Deku Tree has still gone?” Navi sighed, landing on the forest boy’s shoulder.
“You did all you could, Link…” She trailed off, he knew all that already - it wouldn’t do
anyone any good telling him again. Link moved his gaze to the still clean base of his blade,
staring at his reflection.
“We can’t stay here any more, can we?” Navi shook her head, but didn’t speak this time. “We
have work to do… to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.” His childish eyes took on an
older, wiser glint, and the boy walked from the meadow with a new strength and determination in
his stride.

Of course as luck would have it, the first thing Link ran into upon leaving the Deku Tree’s
meadow was Mido the (self-proclaimed) Magnificent. However, instead of his usual smug
expression of one looking at a nasty bug on the bottom of his boot, a look of straight-out
shock graced his features.
“Link…Did the Great Deku Tree…Die?” For a moment, Link saw Mido as a scared little boy - but
only for a moment.
“You! It’s your fault! What did you do to him?!” Mido was now glaring at him, anger burning in
his gaze.
“It wasn’t me! I was trying to-” Mido never gave him a chance.
“Get out! You’ve caused more than enough damage around here for a lifetime. I don’t ever want
to see you here again!” Link could only stare at him, wide eyed. Sure, the Kokiri leader and
he had never really seen eye-to-eye, but he’d never seen Mido so angry, or so deadly serious.
“I will, Mido. As soon as I say good-bye to Saria I will leave this place.” Without waiting for
a reply, Link headed for Saria’s house.
