Lightning scorched the skies. Fires burnt everywhere. The world around him was a desolate wasteland, merely a shadow of its former self.

He loved it.

But he wanted more. Another world must be enslaved. Another world must be corrupted, crafted in his image.

They had come so close to enslaving Earth. Then Rayden's mortals fought in the tenth tournament, and Outworld, his world, lost pitifully. Unbelievably, even Goro and Shang Tsung lost to the humans.

Even when he and his father Shinnok broke the sacred rules and tried to merge the worlds, his pitiful excuse for a brother and his mortals won out. It filled him with a rage that was only comparable to the roaring fire of a volcano.

They will fall soon enough…when I have more power at my side! I must enslave another world…

Shao Kahn thought to himself as he sat in his throne in his castle in Outworld.

There are some realms that are not affected by the timeline of other realms…if we invade one of those worlds and conquer it, we can return to conquer Earth, and not a minute would have passed on Earth!

"Father!" He shouted into the halls to Shinnok, the Elder God, his father. How he had escaped from the Prison Realm, he had never said. But nonetheless, he is still here to help.

"What is it now, son?! I grow tired of your ravings!" Shinnok shouted as he entered, cloaked in all black as usual.

"It is time we took over a different world, to gain more power in order to defeat Rayden and his mortals. However, father, I need your sight to find a suitable world to conquer and enslave."

"Know this: if you fail me this time, not only will I not save your miserable life, I will take your soul myself!" With that he turned and left to find a world worth conquering.

Link sat on a stool in Hyrule Castle, sharpening one of the many blades he had earned in his past adventures, the Biggeron's sword. Ever since the incident with Skull Kid, things had been pretty quiet. As he sat there, he thought about his first adventure. He thought about how after he defeated Gannondorf, he was sent back in time to live the years of his life he had spent sleeping, to live the life he was meant to live. And yet somehow in those years Gannondorf never took over. He guessed that when Zelda sent him back to the moment before he pulled the sword from the stone, it created an alternate timeline, in which he never pulled the sword from the stone. Instead, he turned around and took Gannondorf by surprise, using the knowledge he gained in the alternate future to defeat him and drive him back to the desert. Of course, he went back to the temple and pulled the sword from the stone when he was the right age, which was not long ago.

The strange thing was, Zelda, now his fiancé, knew all about the alternate timeline, as did the other Sages. He guessed that they had knowledge of all the possible timelines and used it to keep Valhalla in the best possible one.

Just then, a messenger walked in.

"Link! Link! I bear news you may find interesting!" he said as he entered the room.

"Yes?" Replied Link.

"Well, it seems Gannondorf is embarking on another mission of terror. He will be going to an island or something of that sort soon, most likely to get supplies and warriors.

"Indeed? Go on."

"He will be leaving in three days from the Great Bay. It would be wise for you and some others to follow him and, if he is indeed up to something, stop him."

"Consider it done. Thank you"

"Don't mention it!" the messenger called over his shoulder as he walked out of the room.

As the messenger left the castle and was free from prying eyes, his appearance blew off of him like dust in the wind. In his place walked a tall, Asian man with shoulder-length black hair and a black shirt, black pants, and a black leather overcoat to go with it. He smiled in sinister delight as he walked off to complete his next task. Damn, it was good to be back.

-Three days later-

Gannondorf sat in a throne-like seat in a private building near the harbor of the Great Bay, conversing with a dark-haired man. Just then, a Gerudo man walked in and whispered something in Gannondorf's ear, and he smiled evilly from ear to ear.

"He's here. Right on time. I enjoy punctuality in a rival. Don't you, Mr. Shang Tsung?" Gannondorf said. He did not reply, only stared. "Now, you're sure he will follow me?"

"You tried to take over the land he lived in, tried to kill his love, and tried to kill him, didn't you? He'll follow you into Hell!" Shang replied. Gannondorf chuckled, walked over to the doorway, and, leaning on it, looked out at the night sky and the torches burning along the walkways to the dock. Then he looked up in a tree and saw a familiar pair of blue eyes staring at him.

Link sat in a tree with Zelda, who was under the guise of Sheik, peering around at the dock. Then, a ghostly ship crept into the harbor, shrouded with mist.

That must be the ship, he thought, but where is Gannondorf? His question was soon answered when he looked into a darkened doorway, where he saw the faint outline of Gannondorf, leaning in the doorway. There eyes met, and Gannondorf broke into a wide, toothy grin.

"There he is!" he said as he prepared to jump out of the tree.

"That's it, little fool. Follow me." Gannnondorf said as he walked out and walked up the ramp into the ship. Link and Sheik raced after him, dashing up the ramp and onto the ship.

On the ship, they began searching for Gannondorf. They soon ran into a tall, darkly dressed man with long, black hair.

"An honor to meet you, Link. Shang Tsung, at your service." He said.

"I'm looking for a muscular, red-headed Gerudo. Have you seen him?" Link replied.

"No. But this is my boat, and if you would like a tour, I will give you one."

"Not interested." Sheik said "And besides, you're lying about the Gerudo." Sheik said. Just then, a door opened and two men, one dressed and masked in blue, the other in yellow, stepped out.

"Scorpion and Sub-Zero, deadliest of enemies. But slaves under my power." Shang said as they stepped forward into fighting stances.

"Hmmph!" Link said as he raised his bow at Sub-Zero, "let us pass!" As he said this, the blue-outfitted ninja reached forward touched his fingers to the arrow, and ice came from his hand and spread onto the end of the arrow, and he broke it off.

"Wha-?" Link stuttered. Meanwhile, Scorpion and Sheik faced each other. A metallic, snake-like head seeped out of Scorpion's hand. Suddenly, two bolts of lightning struck the ninjas and they flew back and hit the wall, then fell down with two great thumps. Then, the lightning formed an oval behind Link and Sheik and merged into a man with gray hair and a matching, prophet-like robe.

"ENOUGH!!" said the man with a god-like thunder in his voice and sparks in his eyes. "Your sideshow freaks attack my warriors?! That is expressly forbidden before the Tournament!"

"Lord Rayden! How good of you to grace us with your…presence…" Shang said in a foul tone.

"What tournament?!" Sheik shouted.

"You have been chosen." Shang said and backed off into the shadows. They turned to Rayden, who was leaning on a barrel.

"Who are you?" Link asked.

"My name is Rayden. Elder God, protector of all innocent realms." Rayden replied.

"What is going on here?" Sheik asked.

"You have been chosen to defend your realm, in a tournament called Mortal Kombat."

"Defend it from whom?" Link asked.

"Your world is but one of many realms," he answered, standing up, "One of them is a forsaken world called Outworld, ruled by a vicious tyrant who has crowned himself king. Now he seeks a new realm to conquer and enslave."

"If he is so powerful, why doesn't he just invade us?" Sheik quipped.

"In order to invade the any realm, they must win 10 straight victories in Mortal Kombat. Heh…they have won nine…this will be the tenth tournament."

"A handful of people on a leaky boat are going to save the world." Sheik said sarcastically.

"Exactly. The essence of Mortal Kombat is not about death, but life. Mortal men and women defending your own realm. The fate of billions depends upon you. Hahahahaha…sorry."

Then, there was a great flash and a clap of thunder, and Rayded looked up.

"Look! It has begun!" The fighter looked at the sky, and saw strange, spirit-like entities and dragons floating about, and they swirled down and coursed through Shang Tsung, who opened his arms widely and welcomed it.

"IT HAS BEGUN!!!" Shang shouted as the entities coursed through him.
