The girl heard someone singing. She kept her eyes closed, not wanting to interrupt, the voice was so nice. She just wanted it to go on and on . . . “Excuse me Miss.” Disappointed she allowed her eyes to open only to snap them shut. They burned with the fires of lush greenery and clear skies. “Are you okay?” The voice, was he still singing?
“I think so,” she answered, trying to pull herself into a sitting position. Strange . . . she found that her arms and legs were stuck.“What?”
“Ah, I think that you have a bit of a problem. You're stuck in the roots of that tree! Here, let me help.” She heard shuffling, followed by sounds of hacking. “Almost through the first root. Please yank now.” She did with enough force to snap through the root. They repeated the procedure until she was standing up, staring at a most unusual sight.
The man before her wasn't that tall, yet still a good inch or two taller than her. He had jet-black hair that was pulled back loosely. His skin was so pale, it almost appeared to be translucent, with lavender eyes . . . and . . . and those ears! “I'm here again!” She grabbed her head and fought the urge to scream. This hell! “No! No! No! ” She plopped herself back down on the ground and began rocking herself back and forth. “No . . . ”
“Are you okay,” the man asked her. “Have you been here before?” She looked up at him through tear streaked eyes, managing to nod. “Then you must surely know that this land is in war? That you should not be here at all?”
“Excuse me?”
“You should not be here. The forest has been under attack all day long, we're in a war dear lady.” He easily helped her to her feet once more. “I'll see you to the back of the forest that way you may escape easily. Why did you come if you knew that it was dangerous?” His beautiful eyes flickered over her quickly. “And unarmed? Nothing to protect yourself with at all . . . your . . . ah . . . dress . . . doesn't even hide you in these woods but makes you stick out most easily!”
She scanned her mind for a quick and easy excuse. “ I didn't have much of a choice sir, it just happened.” Well at least it was the truth, she couldn't control that she was here, and now she would just have to make do. So be it.
“Well then . . . follow me. Try to watch out for yourself, okay?”
“O-okay,” she mumbled growing scared. They raced through the jungle of trees together, she trying her hardest to keep up. Every once in a while he had to stop and allow for her to reach him again, or let her catch her breath.
“No, ” she heard him mumble after a while of running. “Watch out!” Suddenly there was a cacophony of thuds surrounding her. Arrows shuddered in the trees around her. Two hands roughly shoved her in the direction she had just been running. The man glared at her, drawing his sword. “Keep running that direction, don't look back!” She nodded, fearfully looking around the branches. “GO!” Her feet took off.
As she ran, she could hear arrows finding their way into the trees. She forced herself to push on . . . just a little further . . . but then . . . suddenly she was cold . . . so cold . . . and lying down? What? She shivered . . . And found something sticking out of her chest . . . a stick? Why was it so cold? Why was it... dark?
“DOCTOR,” the nurse screamed. The doctor and assistant burst into the room easily falling into their roles. Frantically they checked for vital signs... but... it was no use.
“Time of death 6:58 p.m.,” the doctor finally proclaimed.
“I don't understand sir,” the assistant whispered. “She's been fine... one of our best patients!”
“Its for the better young man, with all that talk of fairies and elves, she was getting the other patients worked up! And worked up at a mental hospital is no joking matter!”
“Still...”
“Still, she's better off now than she ever was before.” The doctor gave the assistant's shoulder a quick squeeze of comfort before he left the room busily.
“I hope her dreams at least brought her some sort of comfort before...” he whispered, taking her hand gently. “What? A-A root of some kind? Where?” He looked at the girl curiously, shaking his head in amazement. “Some dream...”
