A Lonely Heart

Chapter 2

Sohru walked home wearily, his night had been good, but then again bad. He remembered the back of Ichi's hand gliding across his face, oh how he loved it his soft amber hand across his skin. He pulled the collar of his coat to his face, it was a cold wind. As he reached his house, a small and excited little girl came running towards him. It was Aika, his kid sister the only one in the family who truly respected him for who and what he was. Aika pulled at his sleeves and into the house. “It's cold out! You never come home this late are you alright?” he smiled and patted her head she was 12 and innocent. “I'm fine my little angel, just fine. I decided to go for a walk that's all, I'm sorry if I worried you little one.” Aika didn't like it when he called her `little one'. Sohru himself was 5ft 10, and she was 5ft 2 she did feel little but she didn't like it when he called her that. “Sohru!” she said hitting his arm gently “Sohru come sit down with me and tell me about you're night!” she ran to the sofa and patted the space next to her. A vivid image of Ichi patting the sofa in the same way came into his head, he shook his head and whet to the sofa to sit beside his sister. “Well!” he began. “I've had quite a night! You know that man I told you about? The one I had my eye on?” His older brother, Hitcho, walked in and looked at the two. “Hello fag-boy, late in tonight.” He said scowling at his brother.

“Ignore him!” whispered Aika. “So what about your boyfriend?” She said smiling. Oh how he loved Aika, she was the only one who didn't care and was quite happy to talk about it with him. He blushed. “He's not my boyfriend Aika, he's hardly even a friend, but I think things went rather well.” Aika grabbed his coat sleeve. “Tell me more!” she smiled and closed her eyes, she knew that it made Sohri feel better when he talked to her about his social life. Hitcho sneered at them both. “Well Fag-Boy and co. I'm going to bed. Goodnight.” Aika ran to Hitcho and frowned at him, he sighed and walked away. “Well.” Began Sohru. He didn't know what to say, he got close and knew his name, and that's about all. He hugged his little sister. “How is mother?” his mother had been ill, she was sent into hospital. “Not very good….I heard the doctors saying that her chances were `slim'…” Sohru wrapped his arms around Aika.
“Now now, she's strong, don't go by what they say…she's strong.” He kissed her forehead and took off his coat, he wanted to believe what he was telling her, but he couldn't. She had been ill for months and her time was coming, he had to keep strong for Aika, they didn't have a father he died in a car accident a few years ago. He said goodnight to her and went to bed. His head spun between Ichi and his mother, he didn't know what to think, he went to sleep.

Sohru woke uneasily the next morning, something didn't feel right, his head hurt and it spun. He felt dizzy. He found his way to the toilet. Something was eating at him and he wondered what time it was. He checked Aika's room, she slept soundlessly. It must have been early as she's always up first, he walked to the kitchen and ate some cereal. He soon left the house, he felt strange and needed to get away from the discomforting and uneasy feeling. He walked past Ichi's house, he stopped and looked at the big blue door, and he wondered whether he was asleep or not. He looked at his watch it was 7:13am, and he didn't think he would be so he kept on waking until he reached the park. He sat down on a bench and tried to clear his mind. It was easier out here with no interferences, he sat and thought about Ichi. Thoughts about his mother just made him sob, as they were bad. He imagined Ichi's smiling face, and how his deep voice made him shake, and his beautiful amber skin on his own. He tingled. He felt good when he thought about him, it calmed him down but yet he still felt something inside him telling him something was wrong. He shivered, it was very cold he puffed up his jacket and wrapped his scarf tighter round his neck. Even in this quiet undisturbed place, he felt uneasy. He decided he should go home.

As he was walking, his cell phone rang. His ear was greeted by a very distraught sister. It was Aika and she was screaming. Unable to hear what she was saying he ran home. Aika was sitting on the front steps of their porch. Sohru stopped, he saw that the car was gone from the drive and there was grit everywhere, they had been rushing. Sohru walked towards her and out her arm around her, he knew what had happened. Their mother had died.
The funeral was distressing. Taikata, his oldest brother who was 26, was crying uncontrollably. He was also the hardest. All of them were mourning, except Sohru. Nothing could escape his blank cold eyes. He felt the pain and the misery, and wanted to cry. But the tears wouldn't come. He looked down at Aika, she was biting her bottom lip, her mother had told her to be strong and not cry when she died. Sohru put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “It's okay.” He said. And with that, he burst into tears. He looked at the coffin, at his brothers and sisters and at the priest.

Why couldn't he cry? Why couldn't he mourn? He walked away from the grave, and he kept walking. It began to rain but he didn't care, he didn't seem even to notice. He had a hood but didn't put it up, he let the cold droplets stream down his face, neck and run down onto his exposed shirt. He didn't know why, he couldn't understand, for the first time in his life he actually used his power, although he didn't like it. He kept walking and walking not seeming to care where he went. He walked past Ichi's house, by this time he had been walking for about 2 hours. Ichi got out of his car a little further up the street. He walked past him, he couldn't see him. Ichi was about to keep going, but the look on Sohru's face worried him. He ran to him and stood in front of him. “Sohru?” he took his shoulders. Sohru looked up at him. His cheeks were flaring red. He blinked. “I---Ichi?” Ichi felt him fall forward and he caught him. He coughed. “Oh Sohru…what's happened to you?”
