Chapter 5
On the Mind
Aang was listing to the frantic girl talk. He knew he had to hurry. Kenna was depending on him. So he Katara, and Sokka all set out on Appa (how showed up in the middle of the night < he's a flying bison>).
Prince Zuko was walking on deck, looking for any sign of the Avatar. But he was know were to be seen. Prince Zuko was hardly looking though. He was thinking of the earlier morning. That girl made him smile. He was happy because she was happy. What was wrong with him? After seeing Kenna so happy to see him, he was thinking about her none stop. She was so beautiful, her dark brown hair, her smile, and her sunset eyes. She was the most beautiful girl Zuko had very seen. Kenna was really strong too. He had noticed it when he was bandaging her arm for a girl she had some good muscle. He also thought of how brave she was. She let a knife fly in to her arm so it wouldn't hurt her cousin. She never even cried, she was strong body, mind, and spirit.
The Prince shock his head, what was he doing! He didn't have time to think about that girl. He had more important things to do and he could get distracted!
“Prince Zuko, I'm about to go get Kenna for tea, would you like to join us?” Iroh was standing fight behind the Prince who didn't hear him coming.
“No, I have things to do.” But as he waked away he was regretting saying no. he wanted to see if she was still really happy with him. But it was too late and he wouldn't take it back.
Kenna had sleep for about four hours after Prince Zuko left her room. She had woken up right before lunch. She sat in the chair facing the windows about a minuet before Iroh knocked on the door. Iroh lead her to a small tea room. There were two tea cups out and a small platter of sandwiches. She sat down across from Iroh, who started to poor her tea and afford her some sandwiches, which she politely took.
“Tell me, me what do you remember of your mother?” Iroh started the conversation.
“Well, not a lot, just that see was pretty, and a great firebender.” said Kenna taking a sip of tea.
“Did you know she painted?” Iroh was smiling at her.
“No, I didn't.” said Kenna surprised.
“You look just like too, she was just as pretty.” Iroh was taking a sip of tea and didn't see the look on kennas face. She never thought she was good looking, she knew she looked like her mother but didn't think she was pretty like her.
“Thank you.” She smiled at him.
“Do you know who do firebend?” he gradually changed the subject from the girls mother, he know it was hard for him to speak of Scarlet (Kennas mother), so it must be really hard for Kenna.
“I know some tricks, but I mostly rely on my marshal arts.” Kenna took a bit of the sandwich, it was really good.
“Interesting.” Iroh thought of what Prince Zukos face would look like if he hard that.
They talk for while like this. Just simple talk not really a conversation. But then the talk drifted to Prince Zuko. And the talk turned into a conversation.
“Is the Prince really only sixteen?” she couldn't get over the fact that he was only a year older.
“Yep.” Answered Iroh simply. He didn't see way it was so hard to believe, it she could me fifteen he could be sixteen. Nether looked there age.
“Way is he so bent on capturing Aang?” she could remember all the stories that Aang told him of running from Prince Zuko.
“Well, when he was fourteen he was banished by his father. He can only come back to the fire nation if he brings your friend with him.” Iroh saw the smile on her face drop, he was expecting that.
“I had no idea.” Which was true, way had Aang left that out of all his stories, was it possible that Aang didn't know.
“Well how could you have know.” Said Iroh smiling again. The continued to talk but quickly left the subject of Prince Zuko. After about an hour they got up to leave. Iroh walked her to her room, and said good-bye.
Kenna sat facing the windows. She was thinking about what Iroh had said about Prince Zuko. Had his own father really banished him? Well it made since, if it had happened to her she would try her best to get back home… she was cut off in mid-thought but a knock at the door. “yes.” She called. And she saw the door open and Prince Zuko waked in. She smiled at him.
Zuko met her eyes, she was definitely looking at him differently then she had the other day. Her smile was so full of life that he couldn't help but smile back. How did she do that? How did she make him smile just by smiling at him?
“I came to see your arm again, and sorry I couldn't make it to lunch.” Prince Zuko said as he walked up to her.
“It's alright, I had fun talking with you uncle. He is a very interesting man.” She smiled as he looked over her arm. He had hardly looked at it when he sat down in the remaining chair and looked her. She had know idea why he sat down, but it didn't matter she wanted the company.
“You arm looks like its getting better. A healer will come tonight to re-bandage it.” He smiled and said, “Well Uncle is interesting the first couple of days, then he's just annoying.”
Kenna laughed, “So what were you doing at lunch?” she didn't want a silence to set so she thought up a question really quickly.
“Checking supplies, it was really boring but I had to do it. We're going to make a stop in a near town so we can gather what we don't have.” He answered.
“Which town will you stop at?” she looked out the window and she couldn't see any land at all.
“It's a small town called Highrik. We should get there in two days at the most.” He shrugged.
“Highrik, I've been there before. The people aren't what I would call friendly.” She laughed as she remembers a small boy who lived there, he tried to hit her with a pitch fork but fail miserably.
“So I've heard. That's why were only making a quick stop to get some things we don't have.” He smiled, “like women clothing.”
Kenna laughed, “So whose cloths are these.” Kenna pointed to the cloths she had on. She'd been wondering but had for got to ask Iroh at lunch.
“There just extra cloth from storage. We have to have stuff like and this room, incase we get a guest. I never thought that this room would be used for a girl prisoner, though.” He said looking around.
“Yeah, nether did I.” she mutter, and Prince Zuko laughed. It was a short and small laugh but laugh all the same.
“Uncle told me that you can bend fire is it true?” Zuko asked, he also wanted to avoid a silence.
“Yeah, but I only use it as a last resort, which happens more then you'd think.” She smiled at the look on his face.
“Last resort?” He looked very confused.
“Yep, when fighting won't get me out of the situation I use fire. But I only use it when I have to, so most people think I never learned to control it, that way I have the element of surprise.” What Kenna said made since, and the look of confinement on Prince Zuko dropped onto a smile. He had to admit she was smart.
“Oh, I get it now” Prince Zuko looked out the window, all he could think was `wow, she is amazing'.
“yeah,” she gave a small laugh, she was thinking `for a Prince he sure is funny, he looks strong too, and Aang said that he can really fight, and that his ability to firebend only made him stronger, that is really impressive'.
The silence that both didn't want was beginning. They were both thing of something to say.
“How did you get those scares on our wrist?” Zuko finally came up with. Thinking of the scare he'd seen on her wrists. It was a think line that when all around her wrist.
“I got them from the rope Zhao use to try my arms together when I was twelve.” She looked at them, they were small and hard to notice, but they were a reminder that her past was real.
“Why does Zhao want you died so much? I mean he's the only one how ever got close to having you killed.” Asked Prince Zuko finding a good subject.
“Well I really don't know. I doubt it's for the reward money. He was the one who killed my parents, my guess is he wants to finish the job, but I really don't know for sure.” She said rather slowly like she hadn't ever really thought about it. But she really had, all the time, and this was the conclusion that she came up with.
“Then do you think he might someday try to kill you cousin?” Prince Zuko thought of the little girl. He would be really shocked if Zhao killed such an innocent little girl. But he didn't put it past him.
“Yeah, I think someday, but he's going to try to kill me first I'm sure. He would have to wait a couple yeas too. People wouldn't be happy with him if they knew he killed a nine year old girl for almost know reason.” She had thought about that too and decided that she would take Kikeyo with her when Kikeyo turned ten.
“So what will you do when she is old enough to be killed?” Prince Zuko was thinking that Kenna had planed it out, and she had.
“Well when Kikeyo turns ten I guess I'll take her with me. That will be around the time when it's safer with me then it is in the village.” Kenna explained. She had been thinking of the perfect age for a while.
“That makes since.” Zuko said as he quickly ran her plane over in his head.
They talk for a long time. They talked about Zhao, and Iroh, and they spook about Kennas mother too. From there Zuko brought up his father. Kenna thought it best she pretend to not know that he was banished from is father. But Zuko himself told her.
“So that's why you're bent on catching the Avatar. So you can go home.” Kenna was frowning but she still made him fell so much better. And not just about what happened with his father but with everything.
“Yeah.” Zuko said shortly.
The talked of that a longer then went on to other things, but the fact remained, he confided in her. What more she confided in him first. Nether of then more them more then screeched the suffuse with there worries, fears, and regrets, but that was more then the let anyone else do. They really talked and confide in each other, which was rear for them both. Not like it was as sad though, they smiled and laughed too.
They weren't friend now after talking, they just weren't enemies. And they were both okay with not being enemies…
