It was well past midnight, a night like any other night. Alice had fallen asleep from reading and forgot to put out the lantern fire. She held her stuffed rabbit close. It was white and missing an eye. Snuggling at the opposite end of the bed was the family cat.

The grandfather clock ticked and its chime rang throughout the house. It startled the cat awake. He stretched and began lounging toward the lantern, atop the nightstand. Losing his balance his tail whacked at the lantern, causing it to tip over and roll of the nightstand and shatter to the ground. The cat meowed and avoided being smashed. Alice's eyes flickered open. The flames had already started spreading. She clutched her stuffed rabbit and ran toward her parent's room.

"Mama! Papa! There's a fire! Get up!" She shouted over the roaring flames. The door was locked and they were in a deep sleep. Alice ran down the hall to keep from being trapped by the flame. She cried out to them again and this time they awoke, but the flames kept them from escaping. "Mama! Papa!"

"Go Alice! Save yourself!" They both mourned. The house began falling apart. Alice sprinted down the stairs, crying. She ran out the front door and turned around to see if her parents made it. As she witnessed the house slowly crumble from the inferno, Alice collapse and held her stuffed rabbit tight, her eyes overflowing in tears.

3 Years Later…

Alice lies motionless in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling with the white rabbit still wrapped in her arms. Her body shows no emotion, but if you look into her eyes, you can see them hiding the sorrow. She is at the edge of sanity and about to slip. A nurse walks in to check on her. "Poor dear. You should get some rest."

Alice doesn't seem to be paying attention to her. The nurse leaves and carefully closes the door. The moonlight shines through the window. Her mouth twitches.
