Chapter Four
The members of the council had gathered. Elrond was about to begin and none noticed two cloaked figures in a corner completely silent.
“Strangers from distant lands, friends of old, you have been summoned here to answer the threat of Mordor. Middle-Earth stands upon the brink of destruction. None can escape it. You will unite or you will fall. Each race is bound to this fate this one doom.” Silence. “Bring forth the ring Frodo.” Elrond said. There were murmurs among the group.
“So it is true.” Boromir murmured in wonder. Frodo set the Ring on a pedestal in the center of the patio, then walked back to his seat, where he heaved a huge sigh. All stared in wonder and fear at the small golden piece of jewelry that gave the Dark Lord Sauron his mighty power. Boromir stood.
“In a dream,” he started, “I saw the eastern sky grow dark but in the west a pale light lingered. A voice was crying `Your doom is near at hand. Isildur's bane is found.' ” Stepping towards the pedestal, he reached his hand out, murmuring Isildur's Bane. As Elrond cried out Boromir's name, Gandalf stood up saying,
Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazggimbatul, ash nazg thrakatutul, ashburzum-ishi krimpatul
The wizard's voice became harsh, full of power. The group shivered, the ground shook, and the Elves held their hands to their ears in an attempt to stop the sound.
“Never before has any voice uttered the words of that tongue here in Imladris!” Elrond said gravely.
“I do not ask your pardon, Master Elrond for the black speech of Mordor may yet be heard in every corner of the West! The ring is altogether evil!” Gandalf turned to take his seat as Boromir stood.
“It is a gift! A gift to the foes of Mordor!” He looked around the council. “Why not use this ring?! Long has my father, the steward of Gondor, kept the forces of Mordor at bay. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe! Give Gondor the weapon of the enemy. Let us use it against him.”
“You cannot wield it only one of us can!” Aragorn said. “The ring answers to Sauron and his heir alone. It has no other masters.”
“And what would a ranger know of this matter?” Boromir asked.
Legolas stood up heatedly, “ This is no mere ranger. He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn. You owe him your allegiance.”
“Havo dad, Legolas.”<Sit down, Legolas. > Aragorn said softly.
“Gondor has no king Gondor needs no king.” Boromir said, almost sneering at Aragorn. He looked back at Elrond. “You say one of us here can wield it this ring. Who?” Elrond turned to the cloak clad figures in the corner.
“Doragon.” He said, and one of the figures stood up.
“Aragorn is right. We cannot use it. However she can. At great risk to herself.” Gandalf said to the quiet Council, as he turned toward the cloaked figure.
“Lower your hood Doragon.” Elrond commanded. Two pale, slender hands reached up and grasped the hood. Then there the heir of Sauron stood, Pale, her gray eyes surveyed the council with disgust, then her eyes tinted a soft yellow. Her Ravens wing black hair was pulled out of her face in to a simple braid.
“This is Doragon, daughter of Toror, heir of Sauron.” Elrond introduced.
“I could use this Ring. However I will not. I have the ability to but it will unlock a dangerous person who can destroy you. I won't use that power.” Doragon said quietly, though no one missed a word.
“You have only one choice. The Ring must be destroyed.” Elrond said as Doragon took a seat next to Frodo.
“Well what are we waiting for?” Gimli cried, as he picked up his ax and smashed it on the Ring. Gimli was thrown on the ground as his ax shattered to pieces.
“The Ring cannot be destroyed by any craft that we here possess. The Ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom, only there can it be unmade. It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast into the fiery chasm from whence it came. One of you must do this.” Elrond finished.
“One does not simply walk into Mordor.” Boromir argued. “Its Black Gates are guarded by more than just Orcs. There is evil there that never sleeps. The Great eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland riddled with fire and ash, and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous gas. Not with ten thousand men could you do this, it is folly.”
“Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond just said? The Ring must be destroyed!” Legolas lectured.
“Oh and I suppose you think you're the one to do it?” Gimli shouted mockingly at him.
“And if we fail what then? What happens when Sauron takes back what is his?”Boromir asked angrily.
“I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an Elf!” Gimli yelled infuriating the Elves who stood up and started arguing with the Dwarves the Men soon joining the fighting.
“Never trust an Elf!” Gimli shouted not helping the situation. Gandalf stood up and began saying,
“Do you not understand? While you bicker amongst yourselves Sauron's power grows!” Meanwhile, Doragon was watching Frodo who seemed to be having trouble breathing. She looked around at the chaos, then at the other cloaked figure, who got up and darted into the fray pushing Elves, Dwarves, and Men into their seats and pinning them there until Frodo had made his decision. He stood.
“I will take it! I will take the ring to Mordor. Though I do not know the way.”
“I will help you bear this burden, Frodo Baggins, as long as it is yours to bear.” Gandalf said, walking over and standing behind the Halfling.
“If by my life or death, I can protect you, I will. You have my sword.” Aragorn said, as he kneeled in front of Frodo, before standing behind said Hobbit next to Gandalf.
“And you have my Bow.” Legolas said walking over to stand behind the Hobbit.
“And my ax.” Gimli said as he walked over to the group. Legolas suddenly looked irritated.
“You carry the fates of us all little one. If this is indeed the will of the Council, Gondor will see it done.” Boromir said as he joined the group.
“Hey!” The council turned towards the noise. “Mr. Frodo's not going anywhere without me!” Sam said stubbornly as he ran up to the group.
“Indeed it is hardly possible to separate you two, even when he is invited to a secret council and you are not.” Sam looked a little ashamed.
“We're coming too!” Five little Hobbits ran from their hiding spots by the entrance (Merry, Pippin, Xandria, Taraya, and Jessana). “You'll have to send us home tied up in sacks to stop us.” Merry said.
“Anyway you people of intelligence on this sort of mission…Quest…Thing.” Pippin said.
“Well that rules you out, Pip.” Merry said in an undertone.
“I was going to request that Doragon and Meaelyne go on this Journey.” Elrond said while the second cloaked figure lowered the hood. A fair elf with eyes so dark you could see the universe in them and hair a brilliant shade of Auburn.
“I don't see why not, do you, Doragon.” Meaelyne asked. The Elves at the Council stared at the Elf-Maiden in front of them. “You're gonna need people who know the future of this quest.”
“I think we should go.” Doragon said casually.
“You're not going anywhere without me!” Rei stated stepping out from behind Gloin who obviously hadn't noticed her.
“What about me?” Ty asked.
“Woman should not go on this trip they are too delicate.” Gimli said. Meaelyne had to physically restrain Doragon. She was lunging at the Dwarf and muttering things like `I'll show him delicate!' and `Stupid Dwarf!'
“They are going. Well, sixteen companions. Very well you shall be the Fellowship of the Ring.”
