"Let there be light!!" Hiroshi flicked the lightswitch by the front door and grinned as the room was filled with soft artificial light from the overhead fixture. Yuri and Yukishiro cheered and laughed while Hiroshi flicked the switch on and off several times. Yuri clapped her hands in delight. The electrician had been hard at work all week and finally the entire house, with the exception of the dojo and bathhouse, had electricity. It had been a month since they had first moved in and the changes were dramatic. The house was beginning to look lovely thanks to Yuri's careful decorating and upkeep and the outside was looking just as nice. The path leading from the gate to to the house was neatly raked, the lawn mowed and the weeds pulled, and by the kitchen window in the back Yuri's roses were thriving. Yukishiro and Hiroshi had dedicated an entire weekend to scrubbing down the compound walls and repainting them. They had finished at sundown and sat resting under the shade of the ancient tree sipping iced tea. Wiping his forehead on his sleeve Yukishiro had sighed and leaned his head back on the bark closing his eyes. Hiroshi sipped from his glass and lowered it looking over at his son with pride. The two days they had put in were hard but Yukishiro hadn't complained, he'd done his work with a will that was almost abnormal in a teenage boy. They had worked steadily to get the wall clean and painted wanting to have the job checked off their list by Monday and they had succeeded, the wall around them was pristine white once again. The entire house was shaping up nicely and they were settled in, but one room stuck out in his mind. One room hadn't changed since they moved in.
"Yukishiro?"
"Hmmm?"
"Is there something you want to tell me? About the dojo."
Yukishiro blinked and opened his eyes looking at his father and following his gaze across the yard to the two doors hiding the narrow and darkened room. A chill swept down his spine and Yukishiro shivered. Looking down he took a long drink of his tea. "No." he said. Hiroshi turned to look at his son.
"Are you sure?" he asked. Yukishiro looked at him and for a long moment he thought of telling him of the things he'd seen and heard and how uncomfortable the whole place made him anymore, but he knew his father had put his heart and soul into restoring their new home. He couldn't do that to him. So he smiled instead and nodded his head. "Yeah, Dad I'm sure." he had said. Hiroshi nodded letting it go and the rest of the evenning had been given over to plans for the future week when the electricity would be installed. And now...
"No more dark nights!" Yuri cheered.
"No more stubbed toes and bruised ankles!" Hiroshi added with a happy laugh catching his wife around the waist and spinning her around catching her left hand as his arm curled around her waist beginning a spontaneous dance in the living room. Yukishiro laughed again watching his parents.
"Now I can play my PS2 and work on my laptop! Yeah!"
Yuri giggled as she was dipped and set upright again. Wiggling away from her grasping husband she smoothed her blouse and smiled at them both. "With the stove installed and the electricity on I can finally cook dinner! I'm going to the grocery store." She walked to the door stepping onto the wooden partition where the tatamis ended and put on her shoes. "Any requests?" Hiroshi and Yukishiro looked at each other and then at Yuri who was checking her purse for her credit cards and said "Pizza!" unanimously. Yuri rolled her eyes as she opened the door. "No? Well then I guess I'll just have to find something green and nutritious." She stepped out closing the door on their disappointed groans. Hiroshi looked at Yukishiro then rushed to the door yanking on his own shoes. "I better go to or we'll be eating asparagus for dinner." He said disappearing out the door. Yukishiro laughed and shook his head walking down the hallway and into his own room sliding the shoji shut behind him and sitting down at his desk. Looking around he sighed and set to work setting up his laptop and printer before rising and hooking the PS2, VCR, and television up.
"At least I can entertain myself now..." he muttered flicking on the tv and sitting down on his bed watching as the PS2 logo flared up on the screen. "Time to kick some ninja ass!" he growled stabbing the start button and selecting his character.
