" Here we are, home sweet home."
I sighed. "Hitsua. I have been here many times before. There's nothing different that I should know about....is there?"
Hitsua laughed silently as she always had. "No, Pei. Everything's the same. I do have a guest room, though."
"Awww, I thought we would share a room."
Hitsua gave me alook. "Not on your life, Pei! You know my secret."
"Prude."
"And proud of it."
She led me to a room near the backway. Instead of a sliding door, there were red curtains. I drew them back and took a look
around. The room was pretty bare. Only one futon and a medium sized dresser, but that was it.
"It's all right....I guess," I said a little unsure.
"Hey, if you wanted to live in a monastary, you have to live a monk's life." Hitsua sounded offended with my comment.
"I'm sorry, Hitsua. I'll try to be a better guest."
She led me back to the main room and made me sit. "I'll be back with some tea."
"All right."
I surveyed my surroundings. Since it was still night, candles were lit everywhere, giving the room and orangish-yellow glow. An
incense burner was near the altar, its last smoke cloud curling upward into the air. I laid my head down on the table. Even if I didn't
show it, I knew I could manage here. The very main room was a mixture of peace and holiness. I secretly wondered where Hitsua hid
her talismans. Or did she wear them all?
"Here you go, Pei." Hitsua handed me a teacup full of green tea.
"For long life, I see," I grunted, trying to solve the meaning of it all.
"You're thinking of the prediction." Hitsua sat across from me, in a lotus position, as she always had done since we were children.
"Actually, I was thinking of the talismans..."
Her eyes brightened. "Really?"
"Yes, I wanted to know if....well....you would teach a fool like me to use them."
Her lips parted slightly as if to say yes, but they closed just a second too soon.
"I can't."
"Eh? Why not, Hitsua?"
"You forget who you are sometimes, Pei..."
"Oh yeah?" I puffed out my chest. "I can learn! I can succeed!"
"Yeah, right. You are foolish, arrogant, and violent."
"You still love me anyways, right?"
Hitsua bit her bottom lip. "If you want to learn, you're going to have to purify your heart, mind, and soul."
"Oh? You're going to do the impossible? You're going to reclaim my lost innocence?"
"Rin Pei...."
"Sorry," I scratched the back of my head. "I guess I am a little arrogant..."
"And foolish."
"AND foolish."
"And violent."
"And vio---Okay okay! I get it! I'm not ready. Sheesh."
A smile graced her face for a moment. "Wait here." She went into the back.
" 'Oh Pei, you're such a loser!' " I bitterly said in a mock Hitsua voice. Then I smacked my forehead. Of course I was a loser. I just
didn't know it because I was too busy "winning". Hitsua Hitsua Hitsua.....always cutting me down when I got too high on myself.
I slowly straightened up. Where did that girl get to?
I saw her emerge from the darkness of the back rooms. She had exchanged her orange robes for peasant wear. She was holding
a golden tray in her hands.
"And here I thought you were going to come in geisha-style," I said, my eyebrows making a quick up-and-down motion. "What
have you got there?"
"First of all," she smacked me on my head. "Manwhore. Second of all, these are purifying stones."
"First of all, owie. Second of all, what are purifying stones?"
Hitsua smirked. "Purifying stones are self-explanitory, my friend." She placed a clear oblong stone (no bigger than my palm) into
my hand. "now take this stone and meditate on water."
"Which memory?" I asked, right now thinking of Nori in the water, naked.
Hitsua must've saw my perverted grin because a sound slap upside my head knocked me out of my daydream.
"Hitsua," I whimpered, putting on a baby-face, " Why do you always hurt me so?"
Hitsua peered closely at me, her eyes boring into mine. "I want you to concentrate on water in general. No perverted fantasies."
"How'd you guess? I think you would look good naked."
Hitsua rubbed her forehead in exasperation. "Just go meditate." She pointed to the altar. "Stay there until I call you. Then you shall
know what to do."
"Really? I mean, exactly how long is this--"
"Rin Pei!"
"Yes, ma'am!" I scurried to the front of the altar. I didn't know Hitsua could yell so loud.
Sitting cross-legged (There is no way in heck I would be able to do that lotus position.), I closed my eyes, my hand firmly grasping
the stone.
Two minutes...
Four minutes....
Gah....this is taking so long....
I wonder what Hitsua's doing?
Wouldn't it be weird if she really did come out in geisha wear?
Hitsua looks really nice when she smiles. Like some sort of pure spirit.
Hitsua pure? This long? Yeah right, she must've had a boyfriend somewhere.
I'm hungry. I haven't eaten since yesterday.
Stomach's rumbling. Rumble rumble rumble...
Rumble rumble rumble.....hoo-hah!
Okay, I am calm. I am not hungry I am not hungry I am not hungry I am not.....aww forget it. I'm starving.
I wonder if Hitsua can coo--why am I thinking of her?
Am I crazy? I need to go....badly.
Ehhh......maybe I should sneak out, Hitsua'd forgive me later.
There I go again! Geez! Hitsua's no beauty queen!
Bleh......this is boring....
And so it went. My thoughts rambled in and out of my head. Some trivial and some that I've never really paid attention to before.
My inner mind "watched" in wonder as my brain started to think more than it ever thought before. And then, even as I thought the
thought, it was sucked away into....well...somewhere else.
'I wonder where thoughts go,' I thought, marveling at the sudden appearance and disapperance of them all.
I wondered and thought and wondered again.
I stayed in that cross-legged position until the next morning.

"You know what, Pei?"
"What Hitsua?"
"You are full of surprises."
"Why thank you!" I chirped while gulping down the rest of the rice gruel. "So are you, Hitsua."
Hitsua cleared the dishes from the table, setting them on the floor. "I didn't think you would last so long."
"Hah! See, Hitsua? You should always have faith in me!"
"Fool."
"Not ready yet?"
"Nope." She placed her elbows on the table clasping her hands together. "One more night with the purifying crystal. And, Pei?"
"Ye-es?"
"Try and think of water this time."
"Bleh..." My shoulders slumped into a defeated position. I couldn't stand one more night.
Why me? Why me? Oh yeah, that's right. I wanted to learn the water talisman.
