Problems of Attraction

Chapter 1: What is Friendship, Anyways?

Lance nervously shuffled his feet as he waited for his friend to arrive. Veldrin was 15 minutes late, and the blonde-haired boy was getting impatient. The other had always been like this, and it was starting to get just a little annoying. Was it really so hard to keep an eye on your watch?

Just as the young Kyran was about to give up and leave, a boy with long black hair, enchanting dark blue eyes and (in Lance's mind, anyway) an absolutely irresistible smile ran up to him. "Sorry I'm late, Lance. I got caught up in talking with Sage…"

Ah, so that's what Vel had been doing. Honestly, the blonde boy could have sworn that his friend was a girl that just happened to get stuck with a male body; the other talked and gossiped so much that one might start to wonder if Veldrin was a sane male teenager. Well, Lance knew the truth-his friend was far from sane.

"And what would you have been talking about?" the young Kyran pushed, both from curiosity and so that he could tease his friend at a later point in time.

Their relationship was certainly strange; most of the time, Lance was seen as anti-social, sometimes even cold, while Veldrin was a bright and cheerful person by nature. Some people would find it odd that the two would ever be friends.

But they were friends, and the Tagnik'zur teenager had always managed to bring out the young Kyran's more playful side. On top of that, well… the blonde-haired boy had been finding his friend a bit attractive lately.

It just felt so natural, really. The two had shared so much with each other that they'd never told anyone else, and they would hardly ever be found apart; it almost seemed like they were attached at the hip sometimes.

Part of that was because Veldrin was the only friend Lance had aside from Sage. And of course, since he was also the only male companion the boy had, they seemed to be a lot closer than either of them were with their mutual female friend.

The black-haired boy turned a lovely shade of red and looked away, muttering something that the young Kyran couldn't quite hear. "What was that, Vel?" Lance asked teasingly. If Veldrin wouldn't tell him after this try, then he'd just give up-he didn't beg information out of his friend; that was Veldie's role.

"Where do you want to go have some lunch, Lance?" Veldrin asked suddenly. Oh yes… he was just changing the subject. The young Kyran would have to get the information out of him in a much subtler way, but it would have to be later.

Thinking on the new subject that his friend had brought up, Lance remembered this one nice little place not too far from where they were. "How about the Greenhouse Café on Front Street? I've heard they have some pretty good salads, and probably the best chocolate cake in the city."

Chocolate. That was the magic word in the previous sentence. Veldrin was an absolute chocolate fiend, and the blonde knew that would get his friend's attention. Well, that and mentioning they served salad. Vel was a vegetarian, so they had to go places where they would both have a good meal.

Still, if there was mention of 'the best chocolate cake in the city,' then the young Kyran knew he'd probably find himself being dragged there by force. And of course, he was right. Veldrin was pulling on his friend's hand, urging them to go eat chocolate.

Yes… Lance was most definitely attracted to the Tagnik'zur boy.

Once they were at the café, Vel ordered a salad that, quite honestly, looked very good. Good enough for Lance to order one too; granted, the blonde requested they kept the grilled chicken strips on his, but it still looked tasty.

"…Vel?" the young Kyran suddenly felt like he had to bring something up.

"Yeah, Lance?" the black-haired teen questioned.

"Ah, what exactly would you consider our relationship?"

Veldrin stopped eating, his face turning an interesting shade of off-white. "What do you mean, Lance?"

As the blonde's face slowly became a shade of red normally reserved for stop signs, he took a deep breath and went on. "I… I meant to ask what you wanted our relationship to be like. You know, just friends…" the boy paused before muttering the last part almost inaudibly, "or something more?"

Veldie's face went from off-white to a lovely shade of crimson faster than a stoplight changed. Fortunately for him, Lance had taken an interest in a piece of lettuce in his salad rather than in the other boy's face. Clearing his throat to get the other's attention, the Tagnik'zur boy muttered just as quietly as his friend had a moment earlier. "Would you mind if it was something more?"
