I walked for miles before I began to feel remorse over my actions. While there was nothing that should have kept me at the school, there wasn't anything wrong with it either. It hadn't deserved the cremation I had given it. Living there, I had always had enough food and had never really been cold. Now, for the first time in my life I felt hunger pangs and what it was to be cold. My feet picked up dozens of sharp stones and twigs and were bleeding sluggishly. O spent the night shivering and huddled under one of the great pines.
The next day I found a shallow cave set into the hillside. As I traveled, I found some berries and after I reached the cave ate them. I slept for hours. When I awoke, I felt energized and ready to do anything.
Smiling to myself I reached over and picked up the one possession I had brought with me. The book. I opened it and engaged myself.
This book was much more interesting than the first. Where the first book talked about energy, this one described how people could use it. For instance, power was most conductive through a person's hands. I hadn't really thought about it until now. This book gave me dozens of little facts like that.
I won't go into too much detail on the next two months, except to say that I gained considerably more control of my power. Fire is the easiest expression of energy and I found that my power could be used in many other ways. Telekinesis, levitation, anything seemed to be possible now. All I needed was the concentration and to be able to tap into my energies. Then again, even my power had its limits. For a week after I left my school, I could not even touch my power. The book I had brought told me why. I had simply released my raw energy into the atmosphere where it had combusted. My mental energy would regenerate in time, but there were more economical ways of using it. Take telekinesis. I could launch as much of my energy at an object and make it float in that manner, with me drawing more and more energy as I released energy around the object. Or I could contain and control all of my energy with my mind and draw out what was needed to lift an object up, then draw that energy back into myself. This second method took much more concentration but meant that I could use my power almost indefinitely. I set out to master this manner of control, and when I felt I had, two months later, I decided to return to society.

I managed to steal some cloths and food from some campers I had found early on in my self induced exile. I now wore a white T-shirt and jeans, with a purple cloak to add total incongruity to the scene. My feet were still bare, but I had found something of a solution to the cuts. The book had given me a lot of information (by now I had finished it of course) but it was relatively short and could only say so much. It had told me enough so that I could make some conclusions on my own. A person healed by their only bodily energies. I could accelerate the process by converting some of my mental energy into bodily energy. It took effort, but I figured learning this ability was worth it. As I walked and my feet picked up cuts, I simply healed them as they happened.
