“You shouldn't advertise your powers like that.”
“Go away Ilyssa. I'm sleeping; go bug someone who's awake.”
She stared at me with those hard eyes. “You should have stayed longer before returning to your world.”
“It isn't really my world is it?” My sleep-fogged mind was making odd connections that I wouldn't normally have even thought of.
Ilyssa's face hardened and I thought she would leave but she didn't. “Just because your blood is not wholly of a world does not mean it is not your world.”
“So I have some vamp blood in me?”
Her voice hissed. “We do not prefer that term, but yes, that assumption would be correct.”
“Why me? Wouldn't my parents also have to have some vampire blood in them?”
“Your father has some, but it can only be seen every few dozen generations.”
Her voice faded and everything went black.
“You're floating.”
I got out of bed and washed my face before coming back into my room for a clean shirt.
“You were. I saw it.” The Druggie girl was sitting on the floor still staring at my bed.
“How long was I out?”
She slowly held up one finger then another and another. “Five days.”
“Ok.” I didn't really care. In however long it had really been my energies had healed all my wounds.
I sat down in the other room and turned on the TV. News. “…and the assailant who attacked Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman has still not been apprehended…” assailant now? I laughed to myself, “…the Justice League has promised that she will be found and taken into custody as soon as her location is ascertained…” TV's boring. I decided to the library.
A security guard surveyed the streets. So they realized the book I had gotten was from the library. At least the card had been melted along with the pack. They didn't have my name.
Looking around, I made sure no one had seen me. Focusing my mind, I became the shadow raven once more and slid past the guard. No one saw me and I got the books I wanted. I left as I had come, an unseen shadow.
The next few weeks went by uneventfully. I spent most of the time in my room reading. I came out only for meals. There were five other people boarding in the house: Druggie girl (otherwise known as Melanie), a guy named Richard, he was attending Junior College and up to all hours studying, two other girls named Sasha and Britney, they spent more time out partying than at the house. Then there was Alex. I had never actually seen him. It seemed that he had come a few weeks before me. The girls said that he was around, that he came and went at odd intervals. His door was always locked.
Three weeks into my stay, the Druggie girl asked me an odd question which I hadn't considered up to this point.
“Aren't you supposed to be in school?” I glanced over the top of my book at her. “Why?”
She looked confused for a moment then comprehension dawned. “I dunno, it's just kinda odd that you're here while all the other kids are at school.” She had a point. The Justice League had basically abandoned their search by now, and if I wanted to fit in and not get caught I would need to go to school.
“Ok. I'll go check it out tomorrow.”
She wandered out and I went back to my book.
